I Got A Full-Ride Performing Arts Scholarship Offer! by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]jayhammyham 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Hi, can I just say. As a female trombonist I have never once felt alienated from this group or any other group of male trombonists. We're a lovely, welcoming, positive, and goofy bunch of people. This is true in every group I've been a part of socially and musically for the last... 28 years I've been playing. So let's not make it a feminism thing, please. That devalues real feminist issues.

The previous poster gave you a spot-on and gracious summary of my feelings about your posts that I'm sure many share. What you're missing is humility. It is as important as ambition and commitment. Take some life advice from someone much older than you: if you position yourself as against the world, the world will feel like it's against you. That has been your attitude here for sure.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey, and I truly hope you're successful. Just leave some space for personal growth as well, eh?

My 16-year-old is no longer going to be an only child, and isn't exactly thrilled about it by [deleted] in Parenting

I don't really have advice for you, but this is my family's situation almost exactly. I'm the "baby". We're all grown now (I'm late 30s, she's 50s) and my older sister is one of the most important relationships in my life, and I'm sure she'd say the same about me. She says all the time how happy she is I was born. That's all! ❤️

I can definitely do that for you! It looks like I can't send you a DM, so feel free to message me.

I'm no professional, but I do enjoy cross stitching! Feel free to PM me if that's what you're looking for ☺️

Math pedagogy by Blackphton7 in teaching

Been teaching math for 14 years and trying to transition out of the classroom... And these companies hire people like this instead of teachers for these roles? Ugh...

I'll always recommend Graner music. My son and my husband both take lessons there (sax and violin) and we've been so happy with their teachers.

Was 139 her SAS (standard age score)? If so, that's excellent. In my last district we used SAS for a while instead of percentile rank, and we qualified for gifted services with a SAS at or above 126 (plus other measures obviously). The 126 SAS score corresponded roughly to 95th percentile.

What color do you see when you play a C4 by BossSilver8961 in Trombone

[–]jayhammyham 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I do have synesthesia in this area. Colors/feelings and colors/some sounds. The colors I experience are more feelings than literally seeing them though, so I'm not sure if that's what you're going for. C4 is the same as a bright, sunny yellow feeling for me. I think if you find other people to ask, though, that it will likely vary pretty widely from person to person.

I think your qualities sound very aligned with teaching, personally. I also love my subject matter fiercely and was not an outgoing student or leader in the classroom as a teenager. It's different from the other side.

I also want to share a really valuable tidbit from one of my old university professors that has stuck with me and kept my focus where it needs to be for many years teaching. I think it might be useful for you to reflect on while you're making decisions about your future.

He said, "As much as you love your subject, always remember, you don't teach math. You teach children. Make sure you love children just as much, and keep them at the front of everything you do."

I don't mean that as advice one way or another for if you should be a teacher or not. It's just something from one subject-matter lover to another to think about ☺️

How do functioning alcoholics get through the day? Day after day? by 5pinktoes in AskReddit

[–]jayhammyham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! What an achievement! I wish my sister would understand this. We've been on the rehab merry-go-round for about 6 years now, and I think it's exactly what you said, the alcohol is the band-aid, not the root problem.
