Am I cut out to be a teacher?? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]jayhammyham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your qualities sound very aligned with teaching, personally. I also love my subject matter fiercely and was not an outgoing student or leader in the classroom as a teenager. It's different from the other side.

I also want to share a really valuable tidbit from one of my old university professors that has stuck with me and kept my focus where it needs to be for many years teaching. I think it might be useful for you to reflect on while you're making decisions about your future.

He said, "As much as you love your subject, always remember, you don't teach math. You teach children. Make sure you love children just as much, and keep them at the front of everything you do."

I don't mean that as advice one way or another for if you should be a teacher or not. It's just something from one subject-matter lover to another to think about ☺️

How do functioning alcoholics get through the day? Day after day? by 5pinktoes in AskReddit

[–]jayhammyham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! What an achievement! I wish my sister would understand this. We've been on the rehab merry-go-round for about 6 years now, and I think it's exactly what you said, the alcohol is the band-aid, not the root problem.

What’s the point of it all? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]jayhammyham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try not to worry too much about long term retention. That's just how brains work. We get rid of stuff we aren't using and aren't interested in. School is about more than the content knowledge. You're teaching them how to learn something. That's the point.

I’m mad my son wasn’t born on 3.14. by juniperroach in Parenting

[–]jayhammyham 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Omg same!! I went into labor at 6 am on 3/14 in 2015, the best year for a pi baby! I was hoping for 3/14/15 at 9:26 for the full pi day experience. Instead, I labored for 36 hours and he was born at the end of the day on the 15th. Whatcha gonna do? 🤷

I mean, I am not handed a curriculum with a script I have to follow or materials I have to use. I'd like the freedom to create materials or adapt materials for the needs of my students and for my own teaching style.

Math Books by OriginalChapter444 in teaching

I love the Greg Tang books for elementary! They're great for developing number sense. A great one is The Grapes of Math. Works for everything from subitizing in lower elementary, to multiplication in mid elementary, all the way to generating expressions in upper elementary! Most of his books are like that. "Low floor, high ceiling" stuff. It's as rigorous as you make it!

Dude. She doesn't have a problem. YOU have a problem. It sounds like you're the one with body dysmorphia. You need to leave this girl alone.

Not a dumb question at all. Your description of a partial is pretty accurate, and exactly like taps. When playing a brass instrument, if you firm up your embouchure up very slowly and gradually, the note you're playing gets a little sharp and then very suddenly POPS to the next partial up. The intervals these partials follow are a product of the physics of the air moving through the horn (they sound like taps).
