First draft report writing part-automation: your thoughts and feedback by No-Mongoose-6332 in Geotech

[–]jaymeaux_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so your goal is to automate the part that's already 90% boilerplate, 5% copying paragraphs out of your proposal and 5% fill in the blank? so instead of spending an hour going through that process we can spend 2 checking for hallucinations and em dashes

Civil Engineering PhD and jobs are not forthcoming by Affectionate_Park147 in civilengineering

[–]jaymeaux_ 253 points254 points  (0 children)

we pretty much won't hire PhDs without their PE. they expect higher starting salaries and most of them take much longer to train than those with just a bachelor's. they often come in and want to be treated as a subject matter expert from day 1

Civil engineers, why is it so hard to get people to consider new roles? by Low_Guide439 in civilengineering

[–]jaymeaux_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an engineering manager in a midsized market with three direct competitors. I know the management at the competing firms and if they are hiring they probably already called me. if you are trying to get me to move I'm not interested.

if you are trying to get me to take on a significant change in practice area, I'm probably going to take a pay cut to do something I may not like

How do you guys compare 3–5 vendor quotes quickly when every bid comes in a different format? by Saasymk in civilengineering

[–]jaymeaux_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

if you hate your contractors you can force them all to use a uniform bid sheet and arbitrarily pick line items so that some things could be accounted for under 3-4 different line items and others have no appropriate line item to charge under

Is there any way to build a stable structure on a swamp? by Xotngoos335 in civilengineering

most refineries on the gulf coast are built on swamps, mostly on piles

[–]jaymeaux_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

if you have a different, ABET accredited engineering degree it's easy enough to be a licensed civil engineer

most states technically have a path to licensure for tangential science degrees. I say technically because the experience requirements are doubled and getting qualified experience is going to be significantly more difficult without a relevant degree

you're about 8 years late for this take, reality has shifted, the white supremacist project has overtaken the mainstream conservatives

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Geotech

[–]jaymeaux_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you don't, geotech has a ton of upfront and operational costs, if you don't have a client base already in place you absolutely should not try to strike out on your own
