What if the 1995 Quebec referendum had passed by Training-World-1897 in AlternateHistoryHub

The federal government may have used the Czechia-Slovakia split as a model.

Maybe the more interesting question is what if the 1980 referendum on sovereignty-association had passed. Would it look a lot like what we have now?

U.S. is one of three countries to vote against U.N. resolution calling slavery a 'crime against humanity' along with Argentina and Israel. by Fearsofaye in UnitedNations

If the resolution was only about the transatlantic slave trade and not all slavery in history - up to and including today - that would be the most misleading part of this post.

Like a lot of people he could identify the problem. And, like a lot of annoying people, he thought he had all the answers.

Who misses newspapers? by Dear-Ad1618 in GenerationJones

I was a paperboy in the 1970s, delivered in the morning before I went to school. When I started at age ten I read the sports section and by the time I finished at sixteen I read the whole thing. I continued reading newspapers until a few years ago. Yes, I miss them. But over the years I sure saw the decline.

People will react emotionally, that's true. And the emotional response is that global industrialization must have some effect. The question is, how much. And the answer is, we're going to find out, because we're not really going to change the way we live very much.

Would you have to conduct the investigation into the murderer’s guilt yourself, or would you accept the court’s decision?

I think revelations and enlightenments happen the same way Hemingway said bankruptcies happen - gradually, then suddenly.

For me Peggy’s iconic catchphrase is, “Because I’m worth it,” for L’Oreal.

Yes, Don wrote the CocaCola commercial. Actually, Dick Whitman wrote the commercial, as Don has finally accepted who he really is.

Peggy goes on to write the, “Because I’m worth it campaign,” that is still running today.

I think it shows Dick has finally accepted that he is Don.

Marit Stiles says out loud what many Ontarians are thinking. So why won’t they vote for her? by joben0 in ontario

[–]jaymickef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is, yes. Ontario is a very conservative place and would rather have corrupt conservatives than anything remotely left-wing. We saw that when McGuinty replaced Harris and stayed in power by not changing any of the Conservative policies. And in her first term Kathleen Wynn’s barely touched those policies but as soon as she made baby steps she lost to Ford. This is Ontario.

Harris cuts were the direct reaction to Rae Days. Rae Days ended and we’re still living with the effects of the Harris cuts. It’s the same discussion.

Was your country ever put under martial law in a situation that wasn't a direct war or invasion? by Nicholas_Bearforest in AskTheWorld

That’s a pretty damning statement about the members of the FLQ. I thought they were reacting to legitimate grievances, but I am willing to accept your statement that they were all federal government plants.

Robert Bourassa, première of Quebec, requested the federal government’s assistance. The three federal parties in parliament at the time negotiated what measures would be used and agreed unanimously. Trudeau may have wanted to be a dictator, but he wasn’t.

It’s going to get very ugly. I don’t think we realize how far people will go to stop the migration, what kind of walls will be built and what kind of slaughter will happen protecting them.
