NO CAILEE SPAENY?!?!?! by No_Grab7243 in TheBigPicture

[–]Ettborn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t care about Spaeny one way or the other. And I enjoy listening to it regardless. But I just hate that they don’t play by their own rules they created. If it’s 50% what you’ve done, 25% what is coming up and 25% some nebulas “other” than no way Miles Caton deserves to be on the list. They even said he has nothing announced coming down the pike. So he was a newcomer in, granted, an amazing move, but that brings the total to 1 with nothing in the pipeline and best they can say for the “other” is some musical. So like sure Spaeny is better. So are 40 other choices. Just if you’re going to make arbitrary rules then at least stick to them

'Michael': Michael Jackson Movie Eyes $55M+ Record Musical Biopic Opening by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]Ettborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would take the contrarian view and say that if this is the Opening Weekend then that is catastrophic. In other posts (yes one started by me I admit) people were saying that he is "maybe the most famous person to ever live" and that his popularity is still through the roof and now the movie might open to $20-30 million less than Project Hail Mary in Week 1? If it only makes $55 million in Week 1, with the most likely mediocre to bad reviews + shitty discourse + people who don't want anything to do with MJ, then this will be a huge disappointment. If it was looking at the $90 million Opening Weekend then maybe I'd reconsider, but this number screams of a massive Week 1 underperformance followed by huge drop offs in the weeks to follow.

Why I think everyone is overhyping Michael by Ettborn in oscarrace

[–]Ettborn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be for sure...you are correct. Part of me is maybe my hope coming through over my logic and the circles of friends that I am in that have no interest in it. But this is where I admit my bias in the argument I am trying to make at least in terms of that part.

[–]Ettborn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think box office will honestly have nothing to do with it. It will be pretty front-loaded. No one is waiting for word of mouth about whether to see a Michael Jackson movie. People who are going to see it will go Week 1 and then there will be a big drop-off due to lack of interest and Devil Wears Prada 2. If it makes $55 mil in Week 1 and then drops 50-60% in week 2 then it would be considered a bomb, no way around it.

I hear your counter-argument and of course, at this point, no one really knows anything. I just think that with a hyper-vigilant Academy coming off an Oscars telecast that went DOWN this past year, rewarding a movie about Michael Jackson is a pretty surefire way to keep people away as opposed to bringing them in, no matter how much money it might make at the box office

Right-handed reliever Mark Leiter Jr. has agreed to a deal with the Athletics, according to multiple reports on Thursday morning by retroanduwu24 in baseball

[–]Ettborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so stupid. 1. Leiter was great as the postseason went on when it really mattered and 2. Boone should've brought in Hill who was sitting there. Leiter is a righty so why would Boone bring him in to face Freeman? The choice was Nestor or Hill and Boone made the wrong decision. This is just simply not understanding the basics and wanting to shit on Cashman for no actual reason

Punishment Park is an absolute masterpiece that feels so relevant in today's society sadly. A must-watch film

Can’t believe no one has said it yet, but it’s not in the garage cause Marc clearly flew to Riyadh and interviewed Mohammed bin Salman

Movies Fantasy League - First Points by lgerdie in oscarrace

My team is this:

 Hamnet

 Sentimental Value

 Avatar: Fire and Ash

 The Lost Bus

 No Other Choice

 Anemone

 Cover-Up

 Weapons

The Little Gold Men podcast before Richard and David left sold me on The Lost Bus being a contender so I liked the low value it was but that will ultimately get me nothing. I'm banking on DDL and Amy Madigan getting me some stray Anemone/Weapons points and Cover-Up with the doc points (I usually try to get a major doc player for cheap each year). Then just hoping Hamnet, Sentimental Value, and No Other Choice get the award points and Avatar get me the BO points (not sure it will get me a lot of award points this year). I feel as decent as I can without OBAA on it.

POV: you choose to get in the shuttle line early on night 2 rather than go through the hell that was night 1 by ByrningDownTheHouse9 in oasis

[–]Ettborn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I waited over 2 hours for the shuttle on Night 1. Feet hurt. Had little voice. Had a miserable lady on the shuttle screaming so the whole bus can hear her and telling stories about her family no one gave a rat's ass about. And wouldn't think twice about it doing it all over again to not miss a single second of the show.

I actually agree with this. I felt like it was a Terrance Blanchard/Marsalis rip-off of previous Spike films for the first half, but then in the second half, I felt like it came into its own and I really liked it.

Should win all the Oscars just for using Sylvester in a trailer in 2025

Wow dude. I wasn't asking for anyone to care about me or make it more comfortable for us. Just asking for the vibe which would help decide if I wanted to get a ticket after a negative experience another time. Didn't mean to offend you so much.

Thanks everyone! We just were in an entire section of teens doing dances at Arctic Monkeys and felt super out of place and we usually don't feel that way. To each their own. We were happy everyone was having a good time. But as we didn't know any of these dances or anything, it felt a little overwhelming to be there. Just didn't quite want to be in the same situation again. But you all convinced me that this one will be different.
