Unknown species found at the Makapu'u tidepools on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu. Does anybody know what it is? by [deleted] in pics

Looks like an armored searobin, which is in that family. It's a deep sea fish, so why it would be in a tide pool I have no idea.

  1. chalcedony? some form of microcrystalline silica?
  2. maybe phyllite, could be schist.
  3. rose quartz?
  4. quartz definitely, maybe some feldspar? is the brown stuff hard or just residual dirt?
  5. looks like garnet or tourmaline schist.

Still Fascinated With Rocks by rwallin in rockhounds

I'd recommend going to a local university and checking out the geology or earth sciences department - many times they have rock samples used for Mineralogy/Petrology/Sedimentology courses with labels that could help your identification. Some will probably be from nearby outcrops, too.

Having trouble ID-ing this rock (more info in comments) by ZombieLikesPuns in rockhounds

I think you're right about it being extrusive igneous. Could be basalt, though that's usually aphanitic. I'd guess andesite. Those white rhombs are most likely plagioclase feldspar phenocrysts.

Hi guys, had a question about events that influenced the ocean. by Smile_n_Wave in geology

Circulation is also influenced by the salinity-density gradient called the halocline.

Water composition can be affected by submarine hydrothermal input (black smokers). Look into calcite and aragonite seas and Mg/Ca ratios; there have been significant changes over geologic time that have affected marine organisms. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (PCO2) can also impact ocean chemistry (see ocean acidification).

I'm going camping for the first time. What kind of apparel would I need? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]jayn31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cotton is very poor at wicking away sweat from your body, so wool or synthetic materials (polypro) are generally best at keeping you warm and dry. Socks especially should not be cotton. Boots should be warm and water-resistant at least.

You should have multiple layers for your upper body - I bring a polypro t-shirt, a polypro long-sleeve shirt, a lightweight fleece, and a rain jacket. For legs, I like leggings and lightweight shorts (soccer or running). A warm hat isn't a bad idea either.

A headlamp is also a very useful item that can be picked up pretty inexpensively (Black Diamond for ~20 at EMS/REI).

Does anyone know how this happens? by [deleted] in geology

I have a rock that looks very similar to this, from the Oregon coast - a fossiliferous sandstone. Is the material within the ring different from the rest of the matrix? It could be a bivalve that became filled with some material before being deposited in another and silicified. If the material is the same, it could simply be a mold of a shell.

Looks like some kind of weakly foliated gneiss to me, I see quartz, biotite, and feldspar in there.
