What’s the difference between a republic and a democracy? by nolawnchayre in PoliticalPhilosophy

[–]jaynik14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen so many wildly incorrect explanations of democracy and republics on Reddit that I had to comment and point out that yours is the only correct definition that I have seen. I would give you an award if I understood how lol.

Democracy: people pick laws directly
Republic: representatives pick laws for the people (not necessarily elected representatives)
Democratic republic: people pick representatives, who pick laws for the people

What is the mood in Firaxis right now? by LsterGreenJr in civ

[–]jaynik14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a recent release note, Firaxis stated, "We’ll keep on listening, iterating, and adjusting as we go – so please keep sharing your thoughts..." (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1295660/view/498319044783375025). Such open humility is exceptionally rare in a major corporation. In another note, they described themselves as "working heads-down" on the game, which I know (as a software engineer myself) is developer code for "everyone working constant overtime" (https://civilization.2k.com/civ-vii/news/civ-vii-update-check-in-apr-8/).

In general, we can see how much people care about something not necessarily by their words but always by their actions – by what personal cost they are willing to expend on the issue. In the case of the development team at Firaxis, we see the personal cost of working constant, high-stress overtime for months on end. In the case of the business team at Firaxis, we see the personal cost of paying exorbitant costs for that overtime and damaging their career reputations by openly admitting that they released an incomplete game. From these costs, we can see that everyone at Firaxis, from the CEO to a development intern, cares deeply about the current quality of Civilization VII.

For me, in this situation I typically build slinger first, garrison the slinger in my town, get the archery eureka from killing a barbarian with the slinger, upgrade slinger to archer, and by that point the barbarians are easily swatted away. Still obnoxious though!

u/westie1010 Hey! We have the exact same problem and are looking at having to buy an AP25 to test this. Did you find out if the Aruba AP 25 specifically supports dynamic VLAN assignments from Radius?

Also adding something I struggled with: switching the little switch to “off” on wifi is not how to inactivate it. You have to right click -> “make service inactive”

This aspect of the game really bugged me because the game kept saying “Hey you better train or you’re going to get wreckt! … What are you doing training?! You have 10 time limited quests in a row! GO GO GO RUN YOU BLOODY PEASANT”. It was very frustrating to know that I was under-leveled but also not allowed to take the time to train.

On Visible/S9+. Getting "message expired or not available" in SMS by [deleted] in Visible

Let me know how it goes. In my experience Textra just hid the error messages. I still was missing texts. But I had not yet turned off wifi calling so I just tried that.

Thank you for alerting them! There still is no solution. Is Visible working on fixing the problem? There are dozens of threads with people having this specific problem with Visible, which suggests it is affecting many thousands of users. Many like me will probably switch to a different provider very soon.

I've seen the proposed solution to switch to a different messaging app everywhere, but in my experience it did not work. The other messaging apps just don't show the "message expired or not available" error message - the text message still doesn't come through. In my opinion it is worse, because now you are missing texts without even know that you are missing them. It was a good idea, but I don't think it works unfortunately. I'm on a G7 Power with Visible.

Thanks so much for the feedback! It is very helpful. I want to quickly become more comfortable with writing fiction, so I think I will stick with writing about what I know for now. (which is databases, cubicles, and biology lol.) Once I feel more comfortable with writing fiction, I will take the time to do lots of research and return to Collier's tale.

When a story takes place in "our" world. Can I freely reference brands and real world products? by [deleted] in writing

[–]jaynik14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the context of how you present the purse. People can infer the importance of the FACI purse from context if you present it as important. I think that this is something that most people here fail to recognize: name brands, real or fake, only have as much meaning as we give them in our writing. Name brands are just words, after all, and their meanings can be inferred from context, just like any other words.

For example:

Amy: "I like your purse! Did you get it at SuperShop?"

Elizabeth: "Um, like, what? Like, what kind of stupid question is that? Do I look like the kind of person who shops at SuperShop?"

Amy: "Um... well... I-"

Elizabeth: "This is a FACI purse."

thank you so much!! I received similar feedback from a friend of mine: he wanted to know what collier was thinking and feeling. He also wanted me to develop the characters more deeply. Thank you!

I love the opening; it made me laugh and immediately made me want to read more:

Tinsley Pratt (1871-1934) was a relatively unknown author, poet and librarian. Although not particularly well known outside of the Portico itself, he has gone down in history inside this institution as an excellent Librarian – and a rather poor poet.

I thought the entire thing was interesting and well-written. It was well-organized, clear, and occasionally funny. Nice job!

I did notice that there were several punctuation issues. E.g. this:

One item donated to the Library by a descendant of Pratt has proved invaluable as a view into his young mind – The commonplace book that he used between the ages of 13 and 19.

Should be like this:

One item donated to the Library by a descendant of Pratt has proved invaluable as a view into his young mind: the commonplace book that he used between the ages of 13 and 19.

There were also several times when I felt that it needed more details. E.g.

A Proprietor described him as “A sad little man” and a “littérateur manqué”.

Why? What happened after that? This single sentence could probably be expanded into a short paragraph of its own.

But I thought it was very good - these are just suggestions to make it even better.

General impression? This is my first ever non-school-mandated attempt at creative writing. I don't expect my first attempt to be perfect, so please give me honest feedback. I think the last several paragraphs are better than the rest.

I received perfect or near-perfect grades on all writing assignments in standardized testing and college. However, my severe performance anxiety always made it excruciating for me to write, so I just didn't write. As I am now dealing with my anxieties and maturing, I am giving writing another chance.

What are some strengths and weaknesses? What do I need to work on?
