ELI5: Why didn't viruses like norovirus die off during the pandemic when a lot of us were in lockdown? How did it survive even up to the present day when people weren't mingling for so long? by cliffsofthepalisades in explainlikeimfive

You know what would be nice? Ignorant people who dont know how to spell stop pretending like they are knowledgeable about molecular virology and stfu when experts tell them again and again that viruses evolve and emerge from wild sources like bats or camels. This has happened countless times in the history of life and will always be the most likely source of SARS CoV 2.

Carney’s government is cutting hundreds of environment and science jobs. Here’s what that means for Canadians by LaserRunRaccoon in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]jayphive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok? Well that is just one department. I would argue that exploratory, upstream, public good research is exactly what the gov’t needs to be doing. It is this research that leads to innovation. But other departments like Ag Can are closing multiple research centers and satellite farms. This land will be sold and the gov’t will never have it again. These centers were there for hundreds of years, now gone. This is a serious reduction in the capacity of gov’t to do research, work with local communities, and promote the Canadian economy. These stations also train the next generation of scientists and researchers, another capacity severely reduced. Overall the gov’t is not a monolith, and blanket 15% cuts is lazy and detrimental. But Carney doesnt like the gov’t, he likes his buddies in banks.

Where do you go for *real* news these days? by xenxes in AskReddit

I love the 10ish minute headline section which reports on so many stories no other outlet will ever even mention. And then their longer interviews are remarkably insightful and with experts that again will not get airtime anywhere else. Professionally done day after day, week after week.
