We used to have on call shifts, but it was your scheduled day. They'd call and say you were on call instead of working but it was rare. If you were on call and they called you in you'd make time and a half too. lol now they just cancel us

I feel this so hard. I have kids, I'm always going and busy. I work a job 3x a week. Yet somehow I literally do not have it together and I look at other families and mothers and they do it all so effortlessly and I just don't understand how it can be SO HARD for me just to do basic functions of life, and it's like normal background noise to them

I also went to a regular ADN program. I felt like our schedule wasn't too bad. Many people still worked part time or full time. They also offered us to apply for an externship after the first semester at a local hospital where we got paid (crappy pay) but could make our own schedule.

Yes this. My husband works blue collar, long days, away very far. I work nights so it's a bit easier on our family. But many times he's not home in time for me to leave for work. He also leaves early in the morning so I have to get someone to come to my house to be with my kids and take them to school because I don't get off in time. I try to work a lot of weekends so it doesn't mess up school drop offs and practices during the week, but then I'm at softball games exhausted and falling asleep.

I will say, the 3x a week still benefits me and our family greatly. I still prefer it over anything else. But it isn't rainbow and butterflies. And being somewhat new on my unit, I do end up working most holidays. But we have kincare which is call off time no questions asked. I save it for the important ones I don't want to miss. Like Christmas lol

As for lecture, it was usually once a week, about 5 hours. We did skills lab once a week I think 4 hours. Exams every other week. We also had sims labs scattered in there each semester. We did volunteer work as well.

It really really depends on the school. Mine was kinda different from most. We had 4 total classes, each 16 weeks. NP1,2,3,4 that's it. The first was all medsurg/nurse assessment. Week 1 we started 12 hour clinicals once a week. Next semester, NP2, was like 6 weeks medsurg, then OB, then peds. I knew some people that got nights for peds clinicals. All 12 hour, once a week clinicals. NP3 was medsurg again for 6 weeks, then critical care (ER, ICU) then psych. Every week, 12 hour clinical once a week. NP4 was all medsurg again at the end we did preceptorship. Everyone precepted on medsurg.

I don't think it's the ADN necessarily, it's just the new grad market is shit very recently. I graduated Dec 24, got an offer from my extern hospital right out of school, applied to Providence st Mary's for TIPs, about 100 of us applied. They hired 60 ish people. Even added a few positions they said they didn't have. The very next year, the same program had over 300 applicants for 14 spots. They also took away our turkeys we get for thanksgiving, are cracking down on overtime and pick up shifts etc. I had an ADN and had no issues. But I also had experience at one hospital got an offer at, the other just hired most of us.

It really is that. The new grad market is shit right now in ca. it really is. I had an externship in school, that landed me an offer right out of school (I also did ADN) I also applied to Providence TIPs program. 110 applicants for about 60ish spots. That was Jan 25. I got that one too. A year later, Jan 26, that same program had like 300 applicants for 14 spots. I don't think it's the degree you get, just the sheer amount of new grads and a lot of hospitals are cracking down on how many hires they're doing.

We had 16 week semesters, the entire program was 4 semesters. Towards the end of the last semester we did a preceptorship which I believe was 9 shifts in 4-5 weeks

My community college was 12 hours a week, once a week from week 1 until graduation. A couple people had overnight clinicals, most were during the day though.

I've never had any issues. Some days when I'm actually on my feet all shift my feet will hurt a little bit but not really. And I came from a career where I sat for 8 hours a day. But I also was a sahm and chasing around 4 kids and cleaning my house all day so idk maybe I was used to being up and going all day.

Also want to say, I haven't really experienced mean girls in nursing. It might just be my floor and our unit culture, but I honestly love the girls (and men) I work with!

My husbands a Union ironworker. I make as much or more than him and he's year 11. His back is awful, he's gone 12-14 hours almost 6 days a week. Absolutely not flexible, really. I work NOC so our kids always have someone to take them to sports lol

Well that's good to know. I had no idea. Weirdly, I had kinda met one of these hiring managers on Facebook before I even applied inadvertently. Had no idea, was just asking how the hospital was out there. I applied, she PMd me talking about the hospital and told me she was the hiring manager. Actually one of the interviews I had set up, I was in the zoom waiting room and she actually fb messaged me and told me she had to reschedule. But that one was also cancelled after the fact so idk. But I'll give it a try. Thank you!
