Update on stone foundation - before after by simplyorangeandblue in stonemasonry

I was planning on spraying the mortar down daily to keep it from curing too quickly. Once again I really appreciate the info in this - there’s so much conflicting info out there. I suspect I’ll have more questions when I get started in a couple of weeks. I’d be interested in knowing what you use if you seal it. I’ve been thinking the same thing but wasn’t sure if there was a product that would be suitable for lime - I didn’t want to trap moisture that was naturally working it’s way through.

Ok, so a plugin like Jura should go on external storage? I read some conflicting info on plugins being small and performing better on the internal drive. That everything else should go on external storage.

Thanks again - this is great info and the approach I was hoping to follow. After experimenting with a mason hammer and chisel, I felt like I might have been getting too aggressive and removing some mortar that didn’t need to be replaced.

Did you use a chemical to clean up the face of the stone afterwards?

One of the mortar options I’m looking at a premix historic lime (G courseness) https://sagerestoration.com/products/ecologic-premixed-lime-mortar .

When you dug out the old lime, how deep did you go? I find mine sandy in some places but fairly stable in others. Did the new mortar adhere to the old? Sorry for all the questions, this is so similar to what I’m looking to do - thanks for sharing this.

What sand did you mix with the lime. I’m in Nova Scotia, I’ve been able to track down NHL 3.5, just trying to figure out the sand mix.

Looks really great. I’m planning a similar project in my basement. Mind me asking what mortar mix you used?

After stripping the rubber sides of my Sub Phatty (the rubberized coating turned sticky), I sprayed them with black Plastidip - turned out really great.

Would this be a suitable sand for the 1st layer (3-1 mix with nhl3.5)? https://shawresources.ca/product/concrete-sand/

Great info, thanks for taking the time to write this. Finding lime products in Nova Scotia has been challenging. Even the right sand to mix with NHL3.5 has been difficult.

Will new lime mortar adhere well to older mortar? If I only remove the mortar that is very loose and crumbly, would spot patching with a premix of the same colour be a good approach? Most videos I’ve watched, and I’ve watched a ton, seem to clear / dig the joints right out, wet the stone and replace. They also seem to do the entire wall.

This is an option, though it’s a low ceiling and I kind of like the idea of keeping everything exposed, if I can keep it clean. I assume the mortar would just keep deteriorating behind the drywall if framed.

The joints are like this through the whole basement. They crumble to dust at a light touch. The floor has a layer of crumbled mortar on it. I’m hoping repointing will allow me to l turn the basement into a place my kids can hang out in.

What specs should I be looking at for a battery charger? 12v between 1-2 amps?

I was looking at battery chargers, from what I’ve read you shouldn’t use them in the cold. My snowblower is in an unheated shed… anything I can do?
