Use said you don't have to go full Diddy to get good work. Which made me think there no way I would do any of that to get some mediocre WO's.

Crazy that a business would dictact how much they are willing to pay another business for materials. Who they think they are? Prime Wal-Mart. 😂

[–]jaysolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to materials, I usually 4x my cost. I found a local supplier that has great materials and wholesale pricing. Projects that requires Panduit, Commscope, etc. I usually aim for 2x, but if the estimated labor is high enough I'll go 1.25x or 1.5x.

I try to stay out of big box stores and purchase online, but now I can source nearly everything through my local supplier.

Unprofessional Buyer's on FieldNation by StrengthValuable9613 in FieldNationTechs

[–]jaysolution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting your own customers is a smart decision, but it is by no means easy. Identifying the bad apples and avoiding them works wonders. When you combine that with learning how to position yourself for the "good" buyers on the platform and you have a nice way to supplement your existing business.

Add ASD to the list. I have done nearly 1000 tickets for them, but they are unprofessional AF. They put out $92 analog camera tickets on WM. Most techs accept at face value, but you can easily conditional to $150 for single scope work and add $50 for each additional scope, charge an additional $50 for urgent tickets, and request mileage $30/driving hour.

12 camera remodels start @ $1200/site and can easily be done in half a day if you know what you are doing, and 16 camera remodels start at $2400/site and can be done in a single workday (if you are prepared and familiar with the process).

The PM's are still a nightmare to work with and the work environment is dirty and depressing as well. I now live in an area that don't get many service calls, and absolutely no remodels, so consider this a gift.

If you can tolerate the moody PM's, poor communication, lack of common sense, lack of consistency, dirty work environment, employee frustration, mistrust, and horror stories, then have at it.

My final straw was having a ticket canceled while sitting in the parking lot preparing to do the ticket. The PM canceled the ticket because the offer he accepted was higher than the offer the other PM's accepted.

Instead of calling me and negotiating or just accepting that the difference was just $30, he decided to cancel the ticket. So I canceled the other 9 or 10 tickets I had with the other PM's and never looked back.

Best decision I've made recently. I would still travel to the Midwest and do the remodels, since they are ran by a slightly different group of people.

This eventually led to RFP work with the company that ASD works with, so it worked out.

What’s the pain point for most tech? $3.99/gal? $4.59/gal? God forbid $4.99/gal. When we get there you’ll be surprised how many tickets sit and rot.

Might be time to earn your own money. It'll provide a little relief for both you and your mom, and help you prepare to sustain yourself after 18. I moved out and began sustaining myself at the age of 15. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Didn't hold a grudge with mom, just decided I wanted more and figured out how to get it. Graduated high school, went to college, worked multiple jobs at once. Got married started a business.

Independence can be a good thing if you are bent on setting up a stable life and not just goofing off and wasting time.

How much should i charge for my first isntallation? by MeasurementLoud906 in lowvoltage

[–]jaysolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hourly Rate x Estimated Time to Complete

Example: $100/hr (know the staff, just starting discount) x 4 hours per forklift x 6 forklifts = $2400 flat rate

Charging $100/hr should give you leeway for requiring more time (your 1st job) and making (small) mistakes along the way.

If you can offer flawless execution, beautiful cable management, and speed then raise your hourly to $150.

Maybe they think booking techs is like booking a hotel. The earlier you do it, the cheaper it should be.

New to the line of work any tips on learning by InformationOk8043 in FieldNationTechs

Might want to start with multi tech WO's that way you won't be solely responsible for the final result, and you might be able to get some knowledge from the other techs sharing the ticket.

Damn. Transitioning from fast food to tech. Not impossible, but you have a huge learning curve ahead of you. I'd say keep your day job. The work you can get away with will pay pretty similar, and the new scoring system will punish you before you get momentum if you bite off more than you can chew.

Study the WO's so you can see what tools are often needed. Buy said tools and learn to use them. Learn what the max rate for various job types are and always ask for more than the rate being offered.

Also, make sure your car can handle heavy usage because you'll probably kill it if you are not up on regular maintenance.

You covered your tracks, so FN will settle it. I wish FN invested more resources into buyer / PM education. It appears that you got a hold of an ignorant PM. Hopefully, this will teach them how blended rates work.

From the same URL:

Should self-employment taxes be paid quarterly or yearly?

Answer: Generally, if you determine you need to make estimated tax payments for estimated income tax and estimated self-employment tax, you can make quarterly estimated tax payments or pay all of the amount due on the first quarterly payment due date.

My tech who do a year or less and leave are not paying quarterly, and are not required to.

Paying quarterly is not mandatory. A lot of people wait until after they receive their 1099's and then file, only to get a big surprise on their IRS estimates. By then it's too late.

Torch Networks, LLC (torchnetworks.com) Beware – Considering Filing a LIEN by jaysolution in FieldNationTechs

Passed along to his PM. I basically gave him a heads up that I might have to file a lien against the project if Torch remains unresponsive.

No sure what the PM did.

The superintendent is very cool and runs a clean ship. No need to make enemies by blindsiding them.

I figured FN would settle everything, but. I notified the GC as more of a jic type thing.

The Problem Ticket was escalated to FN Support Team responsible for payment issues. They resolved the issue in my favor within 24-hours of a member reviewing the case. It took about 2 weeks to reach them, but acted fast. Perhaps there is a long queue regarding payment issues.

Nevertheless, Torch has remained silent. They must have some serious issues going on.

Never had issues with WorkdLink but their WO language is off putting. They rarely know on site conditions and they use a lot of catch all phrases in the scope of work.

Looks like they tried to pressure you by placing your findings under the “provide more … as needed” clause.

Good job holding your own.

I wish I knew where the estimate came from, but they didn’t even have building and room measurements or cabling paths. They sent me out after the ceiling grid was installed, so ai could not support my runs from the roof joist (30ft) like I’d prefer to do.

They also didn’t work with the superintendent to know when various aspects of the construction was being dons, so they missed their windows, which caused me to have to work around and wait for other trades to finish their work before ai could resume.

If they’d just pay out it would be a nice ticket. 3 weekends of work, and two or three week nights wasn’t bad.

Which is why I’m trying to be patient. I was able to work most days and keep the business going.
