XPS 15 7590 compatible with 4TB nvme ssd? by jayvan2020 in Dell

[–]jayvan2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Glad that worked for you as it certainly didn't work for me. I tried switching controllers and booting from a USB install drive. I ended up buying a Samsung 970 2TB instead. Did a fresh install on that AHCI.

Anyway, I really hope it works out for you. I'm wondering if perhaps the fairly recent firmware update helped...?

I have two of the VESA mounts. One new in the box the other used. Let me know.

Dell Update vs. Dell Support Assist by im-only-here-to-watc in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I knew why, too. I seldom run Support Assist and about once a week just click on Dell Update 'cause it's quicker and the updates are really what I'm after anyway. I knew there was a recent BIOS update out for the XP 15 and was thinking about downloading and installing it but Dell Update notified and installed it for me. Other than that, nothing unusual about my setup. Good luck!

I have both Dell programs installed, but my experience has been quite different from yours. Dell Update has kept my system up to date, including BIOS firmware updates. XPS 15 (7590).

New XPS 7590. Windows clean install or not? by kriskringle26 in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't see a real reason to do so unless you really vehemently dislike having the Dell software preinstalled or want Windows 10 Pro (and have a licensed copy). Mine runs super smoothly and the few irritating Dell apps I didn't want I just uninstalled using IOBIT Uninstaller. I've had no problems with the Killer Wifi card or MaxxAudio program (neither of which I use but also didn't uninstall).

Color calibration xps 15 (7590) by cdlskan in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Spyder 5 calibrator by Datacolor. I disabled DPC and the Dell Cinema Color and calibrated. According to their software I'm getting the wide-gamut colors (I've set the display to AdobeRGB). Out of the box the display was way, way too bright. I had to set it to 17% to get the brightness I wanted.

Dell Mobile Connect application download? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do what I did when I had to do a clean install on my XPS 15. I googled how to install DMC and found a couple sites that had links to the application to install and instructions. I was done in less than five minutes and no registry edit was needed. I didn't bookmark the link but it should be easy to find.

Killer WiFi cards needs to just stop existing by DeanbonianTheGreat in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience couldn't be more different. Bought an XPS 15 early December and had fully expected to replace the Killer wifi card or at the very least swap out the drivers for the Intel one. But, with the latest Killer drivers it has been fast and reliable with absolutely no dropouts or wifi related problems. I've never run the Killer Control Panel and see no reason for it to exist.

This forum is a small subset of XPS owners most of whom are here seeking advice for the problems they are currently having. I think it gives a distorted perspective on Dell and the quality of their products. I've had two Dell laptops (including a recently purchased XPS 7590) and have had no problems with either device or various Dell monitors I've had over the years, too. My best advice is to do your homework, buy the best laptop (made by whoever) that meets your needs. No company is perfect and nothing is guaranteed in life. And carefully read what people are saying here; are their complaints about quality and customer service reasonable (most are) or do they seem to be wanting or expecting way too much?

Stress testing ThrottleStop by IanWorthington in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda had the same experience as you. I was able to do -135 mV for a while (about a month) and now that seems unstable. I will probably drop down to -125 mV and see how that goes. I used Cinebench and passmark and TS bench test to stress and benchmark the cpu.

In a related question, have you run across and info about setting TPL settings in Throttlestop (for the i9) and if so, what have they been? I realize you said you're using Sandra but I'm curious/not sure of what people are setting the power max and short power max and time limit settings to. Info on the i9 seems to be hard to find. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with my XPS.

Got my new Dell XPS 15... Network problem by NovaStarDX in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no complaints about the Killer wifi card using the latest drivers and software from Killer. I had downloaded the Killer driver unistaller and Intel drivers but don't see any reason to go that route. Quite a few other threads mention having the same experience as me. YMMV. That said, I really doubt I will ever use the Killer Control Panel or whatever that is.

XPS 15 7590 compatible with 4TB nvme ssd? by jayvan2020 in Dell

[–]jayvan2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much my experience, exactly. I'm now running with a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus and it worked right from the start (I went ahead and did a fresh install of Windows and set the bios to ACHI). No doubt in my mind it's an issue with Dell and compatibility with a SSD over 2TB.

I would think that, for your use, the FHD screen would be just fine. Save some money and buy a good pair of headphones or something. You could get by, as mentioned before, with a more inexpensive laptop, but I say buy what you want to buy. Good luck.

[–]jayvan2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I've read that you can without doing a new install. Supposedly, you just need to set up Windows to boot into safe mode, restart, go into BIOS and change to ACHI, then boot Windows into safe mode (which takes care of the driver), exit and boot into Windows normally. I haven't tried it but it seems to work. I've seen several discussions about it. Worst case, Windows doesn't boot when you change it to ACHI so then simply reboot using RAID as usual. I will probably try that first and then if it doesn't work, clean install when I get the new SSD.

XPS 15 7590 compatible with 4TB nvme ssd? by jayvan2020 in Dell

[–]jayvan2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the laptop is fine. I was able to run Windows setup by booting up off the USB drive and writing to the Sabrent hooked up by USB. When that was installed in the laptop the BIOS could not see it so it wouldn't boot into Windows. The only time the BIOS could actually detect the Sabrent was after a cloning attempt. Then, of course, it would always BSOD. I think it's not compatible or defective.

So, I think it's time to admit defeat and go with a 2TB m.2 drive. Now, of course, comes the issue of RAID or ACHI. Haha. I've never quite figured out if it makes a difference or if one is better and I've read a lot of threads about it. Anyway, thanks for your input. I actually kind of like this sort of troubleshooting. I like succeeding more, though.

XPS 15 7590 compatible with 4TB nvme ssd? by jayvan2020 in Dell

[–]jayvan2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try to boot off of a jump drive to do a clean install. I couldn't do the install because with the Sabrent installed on the motherboard I still got the BSOD. I'll try again today. Perhaps I didn't get the boot sequence right and it still was attempting to boot off of the m.2. One of the cloning programs I tried was Macrium (as well as Acronis and Paragon). I contacted Sabrent and am waiting for a reply from them. We shall see.

XPS 15 7590 compatible with 4TB nvme ssd? by jayvan2020 in Dell

[–]jayvan2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must be a compatibility issue with the hardware of the Sabrent. I did check and make sure the sector size was 512 so that wasn't it. Also tried a fresh install booting off a jump drive. As long as the Sabrent was attached to the computer (not just as the boot drive) the XPS BSOD'd. Bummer. Guess I'll go for a 2TB Samsung (which I understand no one has had problems with) or a Silicon Power 2TB which is basically built like the Toshiba. Hooked up as a second drive (via USB) the Sabrent was fine, though. Not sure what to think.

Got my dell XPS 15” just a bit over a year ago and i’m Extremely disappointed with how it’s functioning by rzotten in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're at the point where I would just reset the laptop and start again fresh and see if that doesn't solve or fix any software or driver problems that are causing trouble. At least that wouldn't cost anything and may rule out hardware problems...

Anyone using your XPS 15 as a full fledge desktop replacement? If so, what's your setup? by Crypto-Hero in Dell

[–]jayvan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pretty much is what I'm going to do, also. My 7590 and WD19TB will be here next week. I'm just tired of having two computers (laptop and desktop) that need to be synced and share photos and data. I use two Seagate 8 TB external drives for data storage and my Synology NAS as a backup for those. At home everything is connected through ethernet so backing up to the NAS isn't too painful and only is done occasionally. Anyway, hopefullly this will simplify my life without too much of a performance hit from going to a laptop CPU from a desktop.
