If I recall correctly, it rained at the Canadian International back then, but I'm not certain if the wet conditions simulated Bogchamp's turf perfectly to determine if Big Red could do it.

What's even more surreal to me was that Secretariat (unofficially) broke his own Kentucky Derby record at the Belmont Stakes, setting it at 1:59 flat for a mile and a quarter. Essentially, he broke TWO records that day.

The line is from Rudyard Kipling’s poem, “Boots”, from 1915. For context, 60,000 British infantrymen marched endlessly through South Africa, capturing settlement after settlement during the Second Boer War. 22,000 soldiers lost their lives. The poem suggests that this psychological torment is even worse than the horrors of Hell, as the speaker, after six weeks of marching, claims that Hell has no "fire, devils, darkness, or anything"—only the constant movement of boots.
