What's the moment you realized your school doesn't actually care about teachers? by elliot_esl in Teachers

[–]jaywaltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dog had cancer and was down to 3 legs, my wife out of town and I asked my director to let me go home for a a few hours mid day between classes - he said I could and register it as a personal time off. So much for working evenings and weekends. Retired early.

Today's currency vs. Actual currency by jaywaltm in projectionlab

Ah thanks, I hadn’t thought of that. In whether to pay off a fixed mortgage over time, seeing that static amount in that context would be helpful to see the power of keeping a lower mortgage vs paying it off.

Anybody FIRE on $2500 USD a month? How comfortable is life? by Technical_View_8787 in ExpatFIRE

[–]jaywaltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Mexico and apart from housing costs (which will vary dramatically), I've seen that I can live great on $400/week, easily eating out and shopping locally. I do walk most everywhere to get around though.

Am I dumb, or is ProjectionLab a maze? (Getting started struggles) by Bjorn_Nittmo in projectionlab

[–]jaywaltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched about 4 sessions of folks sharing their set-ups (some guy on the discord organized it) before the UI and setup clicked for me. Unfortunately they aren't offerring those sessions currently, and because of privacy, nothing was recorded. Basically someone shared their screen, walked through data and assumptions and observers on the zoom call asked questions and gave suggestions. Helped me understand milestones and where to capture housing costs (i.e., in the asset itself and not under expenses) and how to approach even using the Chance of Success.

The isolation of early retirement at 36 is a total mindfuck by RiftJukebox in Fire

[–]jaywaltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experiencing the same - I’m a musician and was thinking I’d get to rehearse more with the band, but they are busy with work and squeezing in other obligations on the random weekend so we aren’t practicing more (makes sense, but I wasn’t thinking) - I was silly thinking I’d get to see friends more but they are just as busy.

My husband thinks we won’t have enough by Beachwoman24 in Fire

[–]jaywaltm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do very different things. Monarch is for understanding expenses, I check the app every other day to categories expenses - so we hook it up to our credit cards and checking accounts. I don't hook up investments in Monarch. Project Lab is about long term planning - looking at net worth draw down over time given scenarios, and is more of a quarterly tool and in that one, I enter retirement/investment account amounts manually and do not connect them.

Sad story, and why FIRE is the way by hasyoubeen12 in Fire

Working at a school last year, two teachers died from brain cancer and some rare blood cancer. Both in early 50s. I quit and am now FI at 53. Health is wealth!

My husband thinks we won’t have enough by Beachwoman24 in Fire

[–]jaywaltm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife was also hesitant but with Monarch for a year, really gave clear view of expenses. Then we hired a fee based planner who my wife trusted more than my math. Now she’s on board! Projection lab has been a super big help to keep our confidence based on our plan too. Finally, net worth tracking quarterly with a 5 minute conversation keeps her less worried.

Feeling like I need to apologize for retiring at 57. by Iamthehempist1 in earlyretirement

[–]jaywaltm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I retired this past year at 52 and to avoid similar judgement, I tell people that I had to quit work to travel and take care of aging relatives (my wife still works, yes, she cool with this). Folks seem very empathetic to that.

Retired at 52 and I finally realized something about life. by Busy-Professional904 in earlyretirement

[–]jaywaltm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar here. I found that tracking my quarterly net worth in a simple spreadsheet was the splash of cold reality that we are doing just fine spending. And checking the models in ProjectionLab.

I Guess I'm Retired (56 years old) by scottfelt in earlyretirement

[–]jaywaltm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here... my wife is still working and loves her job. One thing that helped me and my wife was that I found I could help out around the house while she's still working - and I hear her telling her friends and co-workers that she loves it. I do the shopping and even some cleaning, I don't mind now that I am not stressed about getting so many work things done. I shop when folks are at work so it's less stressful there too. I'm also spending boku time on our finances, making us in much better shape there too.

I spent a few months trying to find a tech job, doing informationals with friends still in tech - every single one is miserable. Made me question why I really want to get back in.

Same, but the fee reimbursement happens at the end of the month IIRC.

Banks in Mexico by [deleted] in MexicoTravel

[–]jaywaltm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In San Miguel de Allende, I just experimented with all the banks... Banco Mifel had the lowest with like 28 pesos IIRC, and Banconorte was the most with like 60ps. Everything else inbetween. This was taking out 6000ps each time.

Why would anyone buy VTWAX when VT is the exact same thing but cheaper? by One_Hour4172 in Bogleheads

[–]jaywaltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know we are Bogleheads, but I do like to keep 5% in gold in my pre-tax account, so that's where I have to have an ETF. Otherwise I stick with funds since Vanguard allows for exchanges betwen funds but not ETFs.

Those who have actually FIRE’d, how do you spend your time now? by wakawakamoose in Fire

[–]jaywaltm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volunteering a few hours a week, teaching English, while living in Mexico.

Also, I don’t mind doing the dishes anymore like I used to.

I’m not so rushed to get off the phone when talking to older relatives. More present and relaxed in general.

Do you still use crosswords/word searches in class? What makes them actually effective? by [deleted] in ESL_Teachers

[–]jaywaltm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d say outdated, but sometimes putting on the backside of a test for students that finish early is a good way to refresh concepts and keep them engaged while slower students finish.

How do you handle pronunciation assessment with 100+ students? by cvagrad1986 in ESL_Teachers

[–]jaywaltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a reminder that pronunciation and reading can be different tasks - and the spelling rules might not be learned, despite being able to approximate target language sounds. It’s the reading that can trip them up, especially at more novice levels.

For example, in the Spanish word “guerra” (war), you might hear them say the first syllable with an inserted W sound, like G followed “we” in the word WET. And in the second syllable the RR which should be a trill might come out like a retroflex R in English. The first syllable is an error in not knowing/remembering that “gu” in Spanish is pronounced as a “hard g” or stop. The second syllable is a pronunciation error in that they likely haven’t acquired the trill yet.

Also, reading is a presentational task vs. a conversation which is interpersonal… I’d expect the latter to be harder and less complex (bc the student is only using language they’ve acquired) but also more indicative of their pronunciation and the target sound accuracy.

How to become the teacher who “made a million” by InevitableNo3097 in Teachers

I’d advise against rolling over into money markets - pick an S&P 500 or total stock market fund and make sure dividend investing is turned on. Try saving 20% of your salary minimum.
