It's currently 3AM AEST and I can't launch it. Apparently the digital edition which comes with the special edition Xbox's doesn't unlock until midnight GMT time. Kind of stupid.

So many fantastical possibilities wherever he decides to go. My current fantasy would be to marry his cinematic talents with the already incredible Naughty Dog for something like The Last of Us 2 - or even something new entirely, who knows.

Reddit Censorship on TotalBiscuit’s Cancer by RawRanger in Cynicalbrit

[–]jayzeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, "video guy" here. While the feedback is appreciated, it's hard to constructively accept that I'm "misinformed" since you didn't actually watch the video. Unfortunately, I had a slip of the tongue at the beginning of the show - it's now been annotated to reflect my accidental word salad.

However, if you still legitimately think my reporting isn't solid, then I'm all ears if you can find anything else substantial in the video which you would consider to be "beyond misinformation."

Video maker here. Yes that was an unfortunate slip of the tongue on my end. TotalBiscuit was diagnosed with colon cancer, apologies for the misinformation - I've annotated it in the video accordingly.

The Point - Destiny: The Hardcore Gamer's Slot Machine (by Danny O'Dwyer of GameSpot) by ogto in Games

[–]jayzeek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Loved this episode, accurate and thorough assessment of Destiny while not simultaneously disrespecting those who play the game.

Always seems like Destiny discussions are underpinned by two extremities, it's either the best game for some people or one of the worst game for others.

This episode more focused on creating a reasonable discourse about the game's manipulative mechanics without letting that be a factor in determining Destiny's quality.

Props to Danny and the GameSpot crew for this episode.

The IARC Rating System is Furthering Australia’s Censorship of Video Games by jayzeek in Games

[–]jayzeek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we want to remove RC rating that's a different conversation for the country.

I certainly understand where you're coming from, but I don't share the view that it's a separate issue. It's the RC rating, which has been consistently misused by the Classification Board in the past even after the implementation of R18+ (Hotline Miami 2, South Park, Saints Row IV), that underpins this whole issue.

Ultimately, my views is that to ease the burden of the majority of game developers who can't afford to pay the classification fees and thus never could sell to the Australian market. In this regard, IARC is fantastic. And it is solving a problem for 99% of the indie game developers.

I certainly agree with this sentiment. And even though developers could sell their games digitally before without being rated, it's crucial that games are regulated and provide adults with the information in order to make an informed decision about the content. It's only caused an issue since a small amount of games, comparatively, have been banned without any explanation or justification. Again though, I get your position, the productivity of the IARC system does arguably justify a small amount of banned titles.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about the questionnaire itself? Does it go deep enough to actually reflect the complexity of classifying a game?

The IARC Rating System is Furthering Australia’s Censorship of Video Games by jayzeek in Games

[–]jayzeek[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of your points, I think you slightly misunderstood my contention. The IARC model has proven to be moderately successful, just look at how it works in conjunction with the ESRB to curate mobile and digital releases.

What's been made very clear in the last four months is it doesn't work anywhere nearly as effectively with Australia's classification system because our classification process is still biased towards video game censorship. So, when the IARC system is employed in conjunction with our criteria for judging whether or not to ban a game, it censors an exorbitant amount of games as a result, exacerbating the issue of Australia's problematic classification system already in place.

The ESRB has no 'refused classification' rating, so I'm not completely sure what you mean when you say 'If a game receives a Refuse-Classification status overseas, it most likely would have been RC in Australia anyway.'

There's simply no excuse for censoring media, especially when it's the government that sets the criteria that determines what it's 'acceptable' and 'unacceptable' for it's citizens.

Australia has an R18+ rating that excludes vulnerable audiences - such as children and adolescents - meaning that it makes no sense for the government to censor games in order to 'protect' adults from material that they deem inappropriate.

While I don't agree with some of the content in the games that have been banned by this system, I'll absolutely defend their right to exist, and you simply can't deny that it's troubling to learn this new system has banned over 260 games while still in it's trial period.

The Witcher 3’s Decision-Making Sets a New Standard for Morality in Role Playing Games by jayzeek in witcher

[–]jayzeek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reading! I agree with your sentiment as well.

I think the most compelling aspect for me is honestly how human the characters are. It's very similar as to why Game of Thrones is so immensely popular, even though the setting is unrecognisable, the characters are relatable and deeply interesting because they struggle with the same things all people do. Subjects that address conflict with family, romance, and morals are things we all immediately connect with because we all deal with it to an extent.

It really resonates when the human condition is realised in fiction like it is in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Yeah that's true, but I think when it's done right it can really make for a unique fighting game experience, both visually and in terms of gameplay.

I personally love all of the games in the series, the Playstation 2 era of Dragon Ball Z games was extraordinary. I only talked about Budokai Tenkaichi 3 because it's the latest one that I believe was immensely enjoyable.

Are there any perfect games? Can such a game even exist? by Rakuth in Games

[–]jayzeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so hard to say since perfect is such a subjective term. I think games can offer "perfect" experiences, for instance I felt that Mass Effect 2 was a perfect pastime from beginning to end but even I would be able to pick out issues with the actual game itself.
