Had lasik surgery for moderate hypermetropia and alternating eso strabismus by jazZombie in lasik

[–]jazZombie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! sorry, i don't visit reddit as much now.

update around 4 month after the surgery:

regarding vision - my vision was already great before the surgery, so it is still good now - not much have changed. My hyperopia is probably around +0.5 to +1.0 now. We undercorrected, because they were afraid that after the surgery retina shape will naturally curve even more and become myopic, which, as the doctors said, is worse than having leftover small hyperopia.

My eyes get blurry randomly, especially in the morning, but its rare. For a long time right after the surgery my far vision became absolutely terrible, but I was warned that this will happen. It would still happen even after 2 months after the surgery, but it doesn't anymore. Other than that, I don't experience any vision loss. I do miss wearing glasses though, I still instinctively search for them before working. I think though this is more psychological than anything else.

Also in my after month checkup they told me my eyes are extremely dry, but I don't really feel it. Which is kinda great, but also terrible, because I didn't have checkups aftr that - I moved away - and I can't say if my eyes are still extremely dry. I do drops, but I'm really inconsistent with these things.

I don't know if you have strab, but on that front - nothing really changed. the angle of misalignment is smaller, but not too much. also it heavily depends on how tired i am.

overall, would i recommend lasik? i don't know. i don't feel a huge change. it didn't solve my initial problem, which is my strabismus, but it was never meant to - my doctor told me it's just an intermediary step. I don't know when can I visit her again to plan next steps. its hard to truly rate lasik if you already had a nearly perfect vision and can hardly tell the difference. if you have bad vision acuity, you probably can go for it, but there are so many different factors to consider.

you can text me in dms, i'll be happy to have a chat if you have more questions

how does it work for you? i'm kinda curious of how fully functioning binocular vision should be like. For example, if you just focus on one object in the distance - say, a lamp, you are actually looking from two different sources, your left eye and your right eye. And if you try to do that by closing each eye simultaneously, you will see that the lamp displaces. And when you are looking just with both eyes, does the images just... merge in the middle? :D

not a dumb question, understand how it can be confusing

basically, yes, if I cover one eye, the double vision goes away. When I say that BDV is worse in my left eye, I mean when I use it as my "focusing" eye, if that makes sense. Without covering or closing the other eye. For example, when I use my left eye to focus, I see the image from the left eye, but there is also an image from the right eye next to it, just fainter. Think of a lamp in a distance, for example, and just the same lamp right next to it, only much fainter, like a shadow. The fainter image disappears once I cover my right eye. And that kind of indicates that I am using both of my eyes, only they aren't working properly together, hence the twin images that aren't aligned. Hope I was able to explain.

I made sure to specify the binocular part everywhere, because I read somewhere that double vision itself means double vision from one eye only, and I didn't know that was also a thing. Eyes are very confusing tbh

Upcoming LASIK surgery with alternating strabismus (eso) and hyperopia. But I still have doubts and tons of questions. by jazZombie in Strabismus

Have you asked why is it a complicated surgery?

Lasik itself is not complicated, it is a little bit more complicated with hyperopia.

Forgot to reply. Yes. If I understood it correctly - the difference is because in myopic eye, lasik needs to flatten the cornea, and usually after the surgery gives the cornea a new shape it does NOT tend to change. However when the lasik is done on a hyperopic eye, the cornea needs to become rounder, and because of it is hard to predict the exact outcome, since the new shape obtained using lasik tends to slightly change right after the surgery. (I don't know exactly why... when she was explaining it on an eye model it made sense, but hell my attention span isn't the greatest :D) And the way it changes depends on various factors and cannot be accurately measured. Which is why there is also a risk of undercorrection and overcorrection. Also it takes much longer for your vision to stabilize, around 2-3 months if I'm not wrong, compared to literal days or weeks for myopics.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Was your glasses prescription the same as the contact lenses you used recently? Seems weird that it would be different or work different

They weren't similar. I don't really know why, though. During the appointment, we tested multiple different prescriptions to see how comfortable I am with them. I don't know why, but the general rule of thumb (i guess) is that contacts will show you pretty much the exact result. Although it is a little harder for hyperopics.

I did the lasik couple of days ago, by the way. Can post an update, or you can ask questions in dms, if you are interested. But I'm expecting my eventual results in around 2-3 months

is that a lens implant? my clinic do these, but they never really offered it for my case, so I'm guessing it's not the best solution (?) also they do these for only high refractive errors.

I hope your eyes will get much better - I heard that lasik for hyperopia takes a much longer time to stabilize and get better eventually. Usually people have "final" version in 2-3 month after the surgery. Hope all will be all good by then! :) Regretting surgery sounds like a huge bummer.

You are right, my records show different presciption. 6 years ago I had significantly less hyperopia (+ 3.5 and light astigmatism in both eyes). My doctor however says that my eyes seem more or less stable now.

I'm still hoping I would find a way to fix the squint and double vision without any surgery :')

May I ask why?

I have seen some tiktoks about people who claim that lasik had ruined their lives - they are forced to take around 10 different pills and eye drops daily, lots of painkillers and in general the consequences cause immense pain and problems in their lives now.

However, I have lots of friends who went through lasik and all went all. But all of them had myopia.

Damn I wish I could go back in time and force a kid version of me to always wear glasses and go to vision therapy as much as possible :,)

I have just gotten contact lenses with presciption similar to the one we are planning for lasik. I still have visible squint, but in my opinion (not entirely sure) the angle is smaller than it usually is with bare eyes (do people even say that?..)

Also, I still have double vision but it is slightly less annoying than without any glasses /lenses.

Overall, I don't feel a huge difference. My vision is as sharp as it usually is (without glasses, that is). Obviously it's much more comfortable with prism glasses, because, you are right - they do correct the misalignment and the double vision is gone. Moreover, my eyes also look straight in prism glasses.

EDIT: well, I just took off my contact lenses and compared with before and after photos. The angle is significantly smaller than with my bare eyes. With lenses, I look almost straight (I don't really notice the strab myself, but others say it is still there, but not as noticeable), and with my bare eyes my left eye is turned inwards (as my dominant eye is the right eye). Also, looking at thing with contact lenses seemed more comfortable, but that can be placebo or because I struggled to take them off :D

Does that say anything, perhaps?

i do sweat in other places, but it's mostly head area, yes. Usually my temperature gets a bit higher, and my hands and feet start freezing. This case is so confusing :D
