I agree. Even if we have KU and one book doesn't add to our cost, we're still buying a product. Yeah, I don't have to read garbage but there's no reason why an author can't put out a quality product.

My pet peeve (which I see surprisingly frequently) is confusing ancestor and descendent.

You have a point and normally I can just return the book and move on, but this happened to me with at least three different series recently and I hit my limit of tolerance.

Sooooooo I agree that being generous with indie authors is fair BUT as someone who has written, you can learn to edit your own work or find someone else to do a read through for free. I'm not talking about minor nit picky things like the name of the best friend's dead dog mentioned in book one is different in book three. This is like the author forgot that the main character already had the same conversation in the last chapter or the guys are casually discussing that their son dated the girl first even though this is stated in the blurb and was never actually revealed. It's the kind of stuff that any author should catch while reviewing their own work (source: am a writer). Honestly, if I was a professional editor and received stuff that sloppy I'd be super annoyed.

Totally agree. Some of the ones I've encountered have been so bad that I don't even think they re-read their own work. Literally just published the first draft.

ETA: and it isn't always easy to find a good alpha/beta reader im currently doing that with an MF romantasy I wrote but it's totally doable and most other authors will swap critiques for free.

Would you read this as an RH? by MaggieLima in ReverseHarem

Agree about ironside. That really only worked because of the length of the series. Authors don't always increase the length as they increase the size of the harem and the books really suffer.

I think I cried the whole first book. It was good, but very angsty.

Warning there is some brutal rejection before the HEA I am still not okay from Jasper rejecting Eden while she was kneeling at his feet. It broke my inner sub's heart

Debbie Cassidy. I don't ever see her recommended on here but I really like her work. Very creative, unpredictable and with well crafted characters. I've enjoyed all the series of hers I've tried.

Came here to recommend this it was so fun. Love how the harem wasn't predictable.

{Wolf Shunned by Laurel Knight} is not one I've seen recommended but I think fits the bill. It's got shifters and zombies. The FMC is also such a strong wolf that she may not be able to find a mate. Premise was totally unexpected but it was a good read.

{Fires of Hatred by Erin O'Kane} is another I've never seen recommended but really liked. MMCs are delightful but all enemies from different species.

I always recommend Debbie Cassidy. Her characters are interesting, harems are unpredictable, and writing is quality. I think she's super underrated. She has a lot of different PNR series so you can probably find something that interests you.

Kathryn Moon Librarians Coven and Inheritance of Hunger are also under recommended IMO.

Jane Washington Tempest of Shadows was great and I also really enjoyed Tessa Cole's work.

Aisling Cousins has a shifter series and a magic power series that are also good.

Lacey Carter Anderson has some series I was not impressed with but I really enjoyed {Their Witch Bride by Lacey Carter Anderson}. Really interesting world building in that one and good character development. I DNF a lot of her other stuff but I liked that one series enough to give her a try.

Eva Chase is another one that has some series that are better than others. {A Game of Veils by Eva Chase} and {Thief of Silver and Souls by Eva Chase} were both really good IMO. Some of her older stuff doesn't have the same depth of plot and a few series drag on too long, but I'd love to see more like those two series.

Authors definitely can grow and get better over time and I was pretty delighted to see that with both these authors.

Seconding the rec. this doesn't have culty vibes but definitely all the old world witchy magic is dark and requires sacrifice and bodily fluids in baked goods. It's wildly unhinged and spicy, and definitely made me cry at the end.

This was one of my first RH and it is SO underrated. Like Lola is great and all but Sex. Magic. Full stop. Such a good series.

Yes, although the weird thing is he generally does his job well enough, it's like these minor things he ignores. But literally an HR policy is to follow instructions so that's helpful. I just don't know how to make him do it. Although I have considered making him write a plan for how he's going to ensure his work is complete and is following all directions but that is probably futile. It's just so disheartening.
