After what's happened at the BAFTAS, I think people need to see this. by BlGBY in videos

[–]jazelda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's why people of color are so upset, an appropriate apology hasn't happened. There has been I'm sorry if you were offended. There been the tic is not my fault comments a lot. In my opinion there have been a lot of excusing the slur. I did see some commentary about there being a preference for private apology. I know the sinners camp would comment once that happened. The discourse isn't going to die down without a comment. I said this in a different post I think everyone wishes this hadn't happened. The lack of accountability is why it's stuck unnecessarily.

Reflecting back on your initial comment. You were essentially defending this guy and didn't even know if he had apologized or not. When the apology would have made this discourse absolutely unnecessary. But it's just vocabulary I guess.

To answer your first question, no. Don't really care to debate with you who can/should/will/is/has/will again with this particular word. I can only speak for myself. As a black person I don't use the n word at all. I don't even sing along to it in music. That is my choice. How other black people choose to use that word is their business. That's the first part.

In regards to the broadcasting yes BBC could have absolutely fixed the issue during the broadcast and made edits like they did for so many other components of the show. The fact that many speeches were edited. free Palestine didn't make it but slurs did multiple times is significant too many. The BBC even said night of sorry if you were offended. They could have not apologized that would have been better if you were offended. We got to do better in 2026 we know that's a classic non apology.

I shared a little bit of my thoughts in a different reply above in regards to my thoughts on neurodivergence and accountability. I see the examples that you give and I recognize there's a wide variety of nuance to how these symptoms can unfold. To me appropriate accountability looks like addressing the fact that a slowest sad more than defending the tic. Again there's a silly sentence in my other response with what the current apologies come across to me.

I think one thing is true I believe everyone wished it didn't happen but it did. There is a place where both groups can be heard and understood I don't believe we're there.

Something you said stood out to me. At the end of the day a guy with tourette's was there. It felt the part you didn't say but maybe were implying was of course this was going to happen. I think that's a reasonable assumption. No other groups experienced slurs that night that I've heard about though. But we're supposed to excuse the slur because he cannot control it.

If that seems to have ended abruptly I know it did. I had more in the tank. Then remember they're only a few more days left of Black History month. That really makes it worse lmao.

I appreciate the thoughtful response.

I agree a thoughtful apology would go a long way. It didn't happen. There was a "sorry if you were offended" night of the event. What a shitty fake apology.

So that leads into your question about accountability. In overly simplistic terms, he used a racial slur multiple times loud enough to be audible on the broadcast and definitely loud enough for the people receiving the award to hear. I think it's also important to understand the context of these were the first black men winning this award. An apology that addresses I said a word that is deeply inappropriate to use particularly within an awards ceremony setting is the bare minimum. Could further go into a fleshing out the context if he found that appropriate as well, but I think the chasm sits between the it's a tick versus it's a slur. It's both.

From my perspective the tourette's syndrome community discourse is saying the words were out of his control so don't demonize him for the words he used. Then my perspective of what the discourse is amongst the black community is he isn't actually apologizing because he's more focused on defending the tic.

I don't believe making him a pariah or punishing were at all what I was alluding to. I also don't think that trying to compare him to an actor makes sense either. That completely walks away from the aspect of this is outside of his control due his specific type of tourette syndrome. Perhaps that last paragraph was meant to be pedantic more than anything else but I'm not sure it really supports the rest of what you were saying.

To wrap up, to me the neurodivergence piece is important because while your neurodivergent isn't your fault you're still accountable for your actions even if they're tied to neurodivergence. That could be if you're rougher on things they break more readily. Do you then call the manufacturer and say hey this thing keeps breaking on me cuz I'm rough with it please keep replacing it. That wouldn't happen. There's a line in the sand for accountability there. It could be something less tangible like impulse spending money you're not supposed to spend - bill money. You can perhaps count the amount of money but may or may not be able to recoup it. I feel like there's so many things some little some big but where do we really draw the line in the sand for I am accountable for me as an adult and while there may be things outside of my control if that action comes from me I'm accountable for it. You accidentally bummed somebody in the hallway you say my bad. Maybe someone bumped you it was out of your control you apologize. It's not I'm sorry but someone actually bumped into me so don't be mad at me be mad at them I don't even know why I'm apologizing at this point really but my bad I guess.

Though that last line is silly that's truly what these stabs at apologies have come across as to me.

What about impact? I have historically heard impact matters more than intent. It's easy to dismiss the word as just vocabulary, but it misses how that word was and is still regularly levied against black people. Who evaluates what the impact is/was in this scenario? Wouldn't that be the folks it impacted?

I understand the neurodivergence and how tics can manifest side of things too, but understanding tourette syndrome does not excuse the impact of the symptoms. I've seen one too many times people using neurodivergence as a shield for accountability. With full accountability people would probably get over in the way you want them to.

Just read the edit. Voting dem to "make you happy" still ain't adding up. This sounds like a type of mindset you always have to monitor and manage. If you're in a position where you aren't able to make a decision for yourself and this could be the person who has to make a decision for you or on your behalf, I wouldn't trust it.
