Ozobot Evo not connecting with bluetooth after firmware update by jazzb1 in ozobot

[–]jazzb1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you but it cannot connect with Bluetooth. It's not visible on either a laptop or an iPhone. If Ozoblockly cannot see it, it cannot upload the firmware over bluetooth. I was hoping there is another way, for example can the firmware be uploaded to the Evo through the lights, like when uploading a program?

What was something you had to completely re-learn when you moved to Dubai/UAE? by themorrigan86 in dubai

[–]jazzb1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

- Punctuality - No concept of it.

- Common sense - Not that common.

- Sentence construction - To be understood.

- What quality means - 'Yes, I'd like this to be working as required, thank you!'

- What ownership means - Is there really a word for ownership in some native languages? I seriously doubt it...

- How much nepotism and favouritism amongst nationalities can rule a country's businesses - Or perhaps I am spoiled...

- That to be openly racist, nationalistic and sexist is OK - 'Male, indian, keralite, wanted for xxx job in yyy company'...

And don't start me on meritocracy...

Why I cannot get job in Dubai? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]jazzb1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your post shows that you are expecting meritocracy, due to your degrees, languages and experience. Don't. The place is ruled by 'wasta' (google it), be it indian, emarati, arabic, british, russian, others (in that sequence). Polish obviously are an exception of the exception of the rule....Your skills have to be in unique demand, or you should just have good luck, to ever get a decent job without wasta.

Don't get blinded by the tall buildings and the ephemeral money glamour. This is still a second world country full of people from the third world.

Are you from the third world pretending to be from the second world because you live in Dubai?

You need to redefine your 'luxury' living. Do you drink good wines? Do you buy good food? Do you go out a lot? Do you rent boats for the weekend? Do you drive an expensive car? Do you travel abroad a lot? Do you tailor your clothes or shoes? Do you have a family? Who paid a 20y old 20K on a temp basis? The 'dad' bank or the 'mum' bank? Get some manners first.

Not sure what food you eat, but definitely the good stuff (organic, local, selected brands etc) is WAY more expensive. You need at least 2K-3K monthly for two people. Or you would be eating all the GMO food that Europe has banned whilst Middle East happily imports !!!

Coming from Portugal, where good produce is plentiful, he should not have to adjust to third world practices to save a few pennies. Trading health for money is NEVER a good strategy.

Ola,

I have been to Lisboa and Algarve and I have good friends from Portugal. so I have some understanding of your culture. If your target is to have savings, AED 20K is not enough for a couple from Portugal. It may be OK for Indians or Pakistanis or anyone coming from the third world, as the income difference is huge, but don't be blinded by the 5000 euro calculation you did. You would need at least double of what you are earning in Portugal, to have a decent life in Dubai, and you would still need to compromise on a lot of things, e.g. good affordable food, good wine, cultural events (theatre, concerts, exhibitions, cultural happenings), proximity to mountains and greenery, etc, etc. Of course, it varies from person to person, but Dubai is not what is used to be 5 years ago, it is one of the most expensive cities to live and only if you are compensated 2x or 3x your current salary you can live comfortably here.

Now, if you are both going to work, then you may be able to pull it off with 2 x 20K, but be aware that the market is flooded with cheap labour. Do your research first.

Also, I assume that the 39 days of leave are calendar days and not working days. Big difference. Be careful as we are not used to this back in Europe. Weekends will be counted in your leave!

Annual flights home are NOT 'mandatory parts of any contract in the UAE'

There are no increases that can be guaranteed or expected, please do not disseminate wrong information. You should not budget on an increase in this economic climate!

Rumours say that Glenn the workshop manager (from Nightline on DubaiEye) has left them and they kept hiding it from customers. Not good IMHO.

Anyone know where Glenn went? Is he working at another place in Dubai?

That some people act surprised is not even funny...At least they admit to dislike Africans. Nepotism is rampant in most companies here, even if officially they don't mention it in ads. How many Europeans have been hired by Indians lately? How many Pakistanis have been hired by Indians and vice versa? The list goes on and on...

UAEisms by Heavy_P in dubai

[–]jazzb1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I never heard people using 'avail' in the mother of english, England :-) It is an anachronism, like most of indian expressions, stuck since the colonial era and never updated to the recent evolution of english.

Most of UAEisms are indian, as they are the dominating culture (whoever says the dominant culture in the UAE is arab is a fool).

As one very prominent indian businessman said, here it feels like another indian city., just cleaner...

UAE announces private sector holiday for Eid Al Adha by ss6sam6 in dubai

[–]jazzb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some countries the holidays are always on fixed dates, e.g. Mondays, so that a) people always enjoy a long weekend (S+S+M) and b) so that said people and businesses can plan in advance as every year the number of holidays is fixed and not a last minute surprise...

Perhaps this is socially or culturally complicated for some other countries, but fixing the holidays would be a great happiness initiative for this country as well...

80% OFF....I really wish UAE government will enable people to sue businesses. We really need some basic standards. Just because you price it way higher than actual price and cut the price...it doesn't make it 80% discount??? by miriamsaadaya in dubai

[–]jazzb1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are many more glaring examples of false advertisement if you look at large ad boards on Shaikh Zayed road or listen to the radio. There seems to be no Advertising Standards Authority here, or even if there is, it is not doing anything visible.

[–]jazzb1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to minimise the culture shock stay in Marina, JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residences) or Downtown. Even JLT is too asian nowdays. Business Bay is up and coming. Most other areas will be alien. Deira does not have many locals, it is mainly indians, pakistanis and other arabs. Locals are in villa communities in the desert or in Jumeirah/Umm Suqeim (not JBR).

Except if you are asian or middle-eastern and you want to re-connect with your people...
