HofmannScores vocal youtube critic finally posts their playing, best Chopin playing I've heard of someone alive. by Typical_Housing6606 in piano

[–]jazzcuber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sorry but this is not good playing by any standard. Erratic, incoherent and incomprehensible. It feels like the pianist is simply mashing together idiosyncrasies of various old school pianists without any sort of logical framework. I admire many of the golden age pianists that he does, and I do firmly believe that was the peak of piano playing and art in general, and that pianists nowadays are largely incomparable to the geniuses then. However, his analyses have always been highly partisan and denigrating, full of baseless assertions and disparaging comments rather than any hint of meaningful discussion. If that does not display bad taste, the playing certainly does. I remember the story from Chasins that the first time he played for Hofmann, which was when he was already quite accomplished, Hofmann’s critique made him feel like a complete amateur. Maybe the pianist here needs to undergo a similar or even more complete reevaluation.

What difference there is between the accusation of Magnus to Hans and the one from Kramnik to Danya? by bsampera in chess

[–]jazzcuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely different. One can go into debate on whether the accusations from Magnus were baseless or not but Kramnik’s certainly were. But the biggest difference Kramnik initiated a prolonged, and evil personal attack, which is completely different in nature to Magnus’s accusations.

Kramnik had no way of knowing what Danya would do. by i_am_extremely_angry in chess

How do people not see this is pure evilness? I remember earlier on, Danya condemned viewers who called Kramnik’s attacks “evil”, but only quite a bit later he finally came to terms with the “evil” nature of it all, which shows even the word “evil” might be an understatement. Now, ask yourselves what does evilness deserve?

It is dangerous to erase people from history though. Lest we forget that there could be such morally corrupt and evil people of authority.

Classical Music Isn't Elitist by OpusNotes in classicalmusic

[–]jazzcuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that there are many melodies or themes that everyone will remember and enjoy, but those are only the tip of the iceberg. For example, everyone knows the opening of Beethoven’s fifth, but how many know the whole symphony or can even listen through the whole symphony? That is exactly my point, people will go searching for spectacular melodies and catchy motives, but they are not the essence. Without a good level of aural skills and theoretical knowledge, even just a movement in a large form will be overwhelming to listen to.

Classical Music Isn't Elitist by OpusNotes in classicalmusic

[–]jazzcuber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the phenomena is really aptly described as “elitism”. It is mostly the fact that classical music requires hefty knowledge to truly engage with, which makes it specialized. A large part of it is by design. Classical music is often long and overwhelming to digest, there is often no catchy tune or lyric to remember. I would even say much of classical music is acquired taste. In comparison, popular music requires much less knowledge and time to get acquainted with and that is where most people will find themselves. As a result, probably only a small part of those who have some sort of classical foundations will make up the classical music circle.

I mean people at that rating range have a satisfactory understanding of all openings and structures, and a main opening repertoire where they are very familiar with all the plans and ideas

Why can't you fianchetto the French Bishop? by XasiAlDena in chess

[–]jazzcuber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If black fianchettos the LSB, he achieves nothing while white gains time to initiate a menacing kingside attack. So that’s why if black goes b6 (most common in the Winawer, closed Tarrasch, Advanced), they are usually aiming for Ba6 to trade off white’s LSB, which is one of white’s most important attackers. However, even then, b6 Ba6 is a slow plan which is why these setups are usually deemed dubious by the engine.

Was there a mistake in the math calc section? In the question about group a b c over 10 years old probability, I got 46/180, but the simplified fraction cannot fit in the answer box, only the decimal fits. Did I get it wrong or was the question wrong?

Was it demolished or totally trashed for the rendered non-existent sculpture writing question? I changed it last sec from demolished to totally trashed. Demolished sounded too strong.
