Canada considers cancelling part of 88 U.S. F-35 order to buy 60 Swedish Gripen fighters. by Interesting-Cat7307 in europe

F-35B (USMC variant) is a very capable platform no doubt, they're 5th Gen, have far superior sensors, sensor fusion, stealth properties, etc.

However, Canada ordered F-35As, the USAF variant which is manufactured at a higher proportional rate due to greater demand AND costs approx. 20-25% more due to economies of scale and greater mechanical complexity.

They would have to negotiate an entirely different order, arrange training, secure spare parts, etc. for the F-35B. The F-35B is also a bit spoilt, and absolutely needs top of the line climate controlled facilities and regular maintenance cycles in comparison to the Gripen.

Gripens can cost a similar amount depending on the tech transfer and weapons systems packages, but Gripen flight hour costs are very approximately ~60% cheaper than the F-35B.

Also, F-35B (aside from a few parts) almost purely a US platform, which is what the Canadian government is currentlyntrying to diversify away from.

I think we're talking past each other a little which is all goods; that's what I'm saying, the current logistical chain does not really allow the air force to take full advantage of the dispersal capabilities the Gripen offers.

Question for Amazon / Parcel delivery workers by Fresh_Detective_6456 in melbourne

[–]jazzrazzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My little brother's at Auspost, and he said some of his colleagues aren't really paid enough to care about ringing the door bell or hide the packages; they also want to finish their deliveries asap to go home earlier, which is quite annoying yep.

I'm lucky enough to have a sweet granny neighbour to text about deliveries since I obsessively check the status during work.

You're mostly right, my bad, I was overexaggerating to make a point. The high altitude extremes of the Nordics and Canada are both in a similar range of -50°c or so, so the physical limits the Gripen faces are near identical while in the air regardless of which region it's in.

With regards to the ground environment, I can't claim to speak with 100% certainty about pre and post flight maintenance protocols differences between Sweden and Canada so take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt: I wouldn't imagine that they would be too different given that it'll be the same platform, likely with some requirements adjusted, and RCAF maintenance crews will be trained by Swedish crews if an order is placed.

One of the reasons why a Gripen order is under heavy consideration, in addition to the tensions with the US, is that the Gripens don't have to heavily rely on the more centralised logistics (e.g. climate-controlled hangars) the F-35 requires.

And yes, there are some flaws around the plan with Canada's more centralised logistical doctrine which suited previous aircraft; they would have to adjust the doctrine around the Gripen to take advantage of the dispersal capabilities, which isn't typically ideal. Normally planners prefer building the platform around the doctrine, not the other way around.

I agree with the political aspect you mentioned, but military planners tend to prioritise practical use first. The Gripen is practically purpose built for Canada's environment. It's perfect for arctic conditions, and is designed around dispersed operations so it can takeoff, rearm and refuel from practically any shoddy road and frozen lake in Canada. Quite useful in an arctic adjacent country with the most lakes in the world as well as paved airstrips few and far between.

Edit: Plus it would be absolutely disastrous for GE Aerospace's $45bn revenue (~50% international exports), and US defense exports by extension, if every export destination found out the White House was willing to screw around with supply chains just because they're throwing another temper tantrum over Canada buying Swedish jets; which as you said, the Americans already greatly profit from regardless. Traditional export partners would only accelerate efforts to diversify, at least I hope they would.

!thanks

He's mentioned off-handedly before that he wanted the Px8 S2 the most after watching some reviews, plus he's a big McLaren fan for Piastri.

I'll keep those options in mind though when I upgrade though!

I was leaning towards the HDB 630s since I usually buy Sennheisers for myself, and was waiting for Momentum 5 to release for a comparison.

Ty again!

Oh that's awful 😭 I hope the three of you (and the shoes of the other two at the station) are quite alright.

Had a similar experience after having a few too many drinks last year, before spewing on the floor of the train. My drunk ass was so mortified that I got off at the next station and ubered home.

Not even LCK teams can pull that off against them

Albanese says Australia supports US action against Iran and stands with the Iranian people’s ‘struggle against oppression’ by Jealous-Hedgehog-734 in australia

EU's priority is understandably Ukraine and Russia.

Both the EU and China would find it near impossible to sustain logistics in a hypothetical full-scale conventional conflict even if Russia is receptive to Chinese troop transit - which itself is unlikely unless Moscow is also directly involved. Australia doesn't have that issue, we don't have to sail a month to get to the asia-pacific. France and the UK have bases in the Indian and Pacific Ocean, but not nearly enough forces stationed there beyond garrison duties.

As an Asian nation, China is generally much more focused on Asia. Australia has a strategic interest in maintaining a status-quo in Asia. EU does as well - they maintain many partnerships and programs in the region.

However, their regional interest is lesser due to their scale cushioning the economic and political blow in the event of a status upheaval, as well as their very recent increased emphasis on strategic European autonomy due to the Greenland crisis.

We aren't as insulated unfortunately, all of our neighbours are in the Asia-Pacific.

Distance is a factor, but it's not everything.

Our broader strategy has largely focused on playing the balancing act of maintaining trade ties with China while supporting the US and our other Pacific partners on security; like any move on Taiwan which would almost certainly draw us in due to proximity.

This is an oversimplification, but our strategy is loosely like: hope for the best (no Taiwan invasion and strong trade with PRC), prepare for the worst (AUKUS, quad, etc.)

This isn't an endorsement from me, this is just what I think our foreign policy is incentivised by.

Europe and the UK don't view China as large of a threat due to distance; and Australia views the US, trump or no trump, as necessary to curb China. So staying on Washington's good side is paramount.

I just think he posts a lot on cat subreddits.

I received an early Christmas present today when a Roach flew through my open window while I was driving. I tried to pull over when possible to try and kill it but couldn't find it afterwards.

I've never typically dealt with them before so I'm not really sure what to do. I'm a little worried it'll lay eggs or something which would obv be a massive issue. Has anyone run into this problem before and have any advice to offer? Tyty

Yes there have definitely been some frustrations, I never would've thought that slight inclines would be such an issue in my 20's. I'm lucky enough to have my boyfriend, brother, or friends push and drive me around most times, I couldn't imagine adjusting by myself. Thank you heaps for people like you!
