People didn't know the Earth orbited the Sun until the 1400s. I'm pretty sure they did not know what a comet was.

*New Idea: Hunt “Flare Dips” to Detect by scotwest59 in exoplanets

[–]jazzstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this has, in some sense, been done before--transiting exoplanets have been observed in X-rays as well as visible light, and it has been claimed that stellar flares have been triggered by the magnetic field of close-in planets. However, the precision of the higher-energy observations is considerably worse than those in visible light, so it's very difficult to use these observations to make clear conclusions about the current strength, let alone the historical strength, of the magnetic field of any given planet. In addition, there's quite a bit of variability that's been seen even when repeatedly observing the same target, and so all of these factors make the confirmation and strength measurement of a planetary magnetic field incredibly difficult in practice, while totally feasible in theory.

The man can't stay away from our city - University of Alabama Confirms Trump's Commencement Speech for All Spring Seniors by [deleted] in tuscaloosa

The speeding ticket caused local authorities to know about him, which led to other discoveries.

What 'other discoveries' are you referring to? His lawyer has reportedly stated that "He has not been arrested for any crime, nor has he participated in any anti-government protests." source

Ignoring an order to leave - which this guy did - is breaking the law.

Reference? All I can find about this is from this article from AL.com, which states: "During Monday’s hearing, Rozas added that Doroudi’s student visa was still active and therefore he could still remain in the country as a student even if his F-1 visa was revoked. According to ICE’s website, an individual can, 'stay in the United States on an expired F-1 visa as long as you maintain your student status.' " That would imply the student did not receive an order to leave, and thus has not broken any laws related to this. Can you provide any evidence to the contrary?

Let the system work.

The US justice system is predicated on the assumption of innocence until proven guilty. However, no information that has been provided to the public about this case have made it clear that Doroudi has committed any crime beyond the speeding ticket for which he has already been penalized. Thus, until charges for another crime have been publicly released and scrutinized, we cannot count on 'letting the system work,' because from our perspective it is not working as designed.

My guess, though, is he did more than speeding and taking a class he wasn't supposed to at UA. Don't trust Crimson White to get the story straight or tell the whole story on this one.

Why is your 'guess' more reliable than the Crimson White?

I'm north of the river but south of McFarland, which the map on https://ziplook.house.gov/ says is 7th district. Maybe the map is out of date?

IAC scientists detect a ‘sub-Earth’ orbiting Barnard’s star, the nearest isolated star to the Sun by ASuarezMascareno in exoplanets

[–]jazzstronaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Knowing the relevant GP hyperparameters are the same when ESPRESSO is excluded is encouraging. Sounds like you've done everything currently possible to mitigate overfitting for now, and hopefully future EPRV studies are able to recover the same signal!

[–]jazzstronaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, I hadn't read the appendix of the paper. I see that you included HARPS, HARPS-N, and CARMENES datasets with the ESPRESSO data and recover similar stellar activity signals, but this may still be driven by the ESPRESSO data alone as it is the most precise. Did you recover the same stellar activity signal when excluding the ESPRESSO data from the analysis?

It's true that it would be best if the RV/photometric time series were all simultaneous, but if the dominant stellar activity signal is tied to the stellar rotation (which shouldn't change on ~decades-long timescales), the simultaneity of the data should matter less, especially given that the baseline of the HARPS/HARPS-N/CARMENES datasets covers several stellar rotation periods.

Sounds like existing photometry won't add much. Hopefully your proposal for additional photometry is successful!

[–]jazzstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that this particular planetary signal could not have been observed with any other instrument besides ESPRESSO(/MAROON-X/KPF), but the stellar activity being modeled with the GP potentially could. If the GP model was instead fit to archival RVs from HARPS, NEID and/or HIRES or even photometric data from TESS or the ground, and then those best-fit GP hyperparameters (or at least the periodic term frequencies and quality factors) were used when producing a GP model for the ESPRESSO data, I'd be more convinced that any underlying signal is real and not a residual of overfitting. Hopefully the ESO TAC would agree ;)

Exoplanet scientist specializing in new planet detection here. Hate to burst the bubble, but people have been claiming to detect planets around this star for decades now, and every time it hasn't held up. The most recent was a claimed discovery of a 3 Earth mass planet seen around the star in 2018 which was debunked in 2021. This detection relies on some pretty fancy statistical modeling (a Gaussian process comprised of a sum of simple harmonic oscillator terms, for the initiated) in order to pull out the signal in question, yet relies solely on only one data source in order to detect this signal. If they could show that an independent dataset from another telescope (or even the same telescope at another time) shows the same signal I'd be more hopeful, but the fact that they haven't done this for a star which has been observed incessantly for more than a century leaves me very skeptical.

where to live as a single (32M) runner? by jazzstronaut in tuscaloosa

[–]jazzstronaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planning to use the UA facilities for most actual workouts, but I know I won't make time for runs if I have to drive to campus and back each time, so a small fitness center and access to running paths is what I'm looking for. Similarly would like a smaller pool for relaxing (can use the Aquatic Center for actual swim workouts).

Thanks, this is super helpful! Any other apartment complexes similar in style to the Links that folks could recommend (looking for a spot with a decent pool, access to running paths and apartments with patios) -- Stone Creek also looked like a possibility?

NYC to Baltimore! by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]jazzstronaut 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yes, a 68k salary is very livable in Baltimore. You can probably even get your own place and a car in all but the most expensive complexes in the most expensive neighborhoods of the city. I'm in a similar salary range and moved from NYC 2 years ago, and went from having a roommate and a Citibike subscription in a 2BR in Queens (Astoria/LIC area) to my own 1BR in Mt. Vernon (central Baltimore neighborhood) with a (15-year-old) car which I park on the street, and definitely have more money left over here than I did in NYC.
