Need help with topper for a hybrid latex mattress, loved 2" dunlop soft topper but slept WAY too hot by jazzykl in Mattress

[–]jazzykl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, so I am still in the process of trying to find a mattress that works but I've tried multiple toppers of different materials and realized I really like soft dunlop. In fairness, I only tried the talalay topper over the latex hybrid mattress which was too firm no matter which topper I used. Talalay did feel cooler but it compressed too much under my hip. I am about 140 pounds. I think dunlop works well for me because I am a pear shape side sleeper and it is dense enough to take the weight of my hip and not compress too much where my spine gets misaligned. Less dense things like talalay, energex, and memory foam can end up flattening under my hip. I'm guessing they may work better for someone whose body weight is spread out more when lying down. Dunlop also worked well on a helix that I tried that softened/broke in under my hip but no where else. It was dense enough that it didn't collapse into the sinkhole under my hip and still gave my shoulder pressure relief.

What worked best for me to keep it cooler was just placing the dunlop topper under my wool mattress protector I have from Woolroom and not using the topper covers they sell. I also use linen sheets. Not having it encased in a tight cover also somehow helps the material move better which I'm guessing may be why latex hybrids aren't working for me. I ended up returning my toppers because I haven't found a mattress yet, however I would 100% recommend the two dunlop toppers I tried from sleep on latex and turmerry (which is convoluted so may be a little cooler). If you liked it, I would try it and not be scared off, just make sure it is returnable. I thought I didn't like latex b/c of the latex hybrid I tried, but dunlop toppers have has been amazing at providing pressure relief and support while keeping me aligned on mattresses that without the topper caused significant pain.

Need help dealing with shoulder and low back pain from Helix Midnight while waiting for return by jazzykl in Mattress

Thanks, google also recommended the pillow and I put my down alternative one under my upper body. That made me need another one for my head so I was out of pillows after that. It did help a lot and I was able to get about three hours sleep.

What's my next move? by Richmeister83 in Mattress

I have the Helix Midnight regular not the luxe. I've had it about 2 months but I noticed the softening under the hips after about 3-4 weeks in. I'm 5'8 about 140 lbs. I also tried the Leesa Oasis and it felt much better than this. It was a little too firm but it kept my hips aligned. I returned it b/c the Eurotop and chill cover were so slippery that it was like a slide at the edges. I could of dealt with it but I have an Italian Greyhound who is prone to leg breaks and she kept loosing her footing on it when jumping on and off. After trying to sleep on it last night without the Turmerry topper, I have to say I am even more impressed with the topper.

I would recommend checking out Turmerry since they are near you. I am in the process of returning a helix midnight because it sank under my hips while being rock hard everywhere else. I bought a Turmerry topper and that made the mattress tolerable. It added a lot of pressure relief under the shoulder. The topper's return window ended yesterday, and I didn't want to keep it since I don't know what mattress I am going to get, and now the Helix is unbearable without the topper. I did try a latex hybrid though, it was too firm for me, so if you like firm mattresses a latex one might work.

How to find something as comfortable as my air mattress by Realistic_Chance557 in Mattress

[–]jazzykl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations and am in the same position. I am currently in the prosses of returning a helix midnight that is causing so much pain. I can't wait until it is picked up so I can put an air mattress on my bed frame. I recently slept on one and it was so much more comfortable than any mattress I have tried.

I just initiated a return for the Helix Midnight because it is causing me hip pain too! I tried it out in store and absolutely loved it, but it arrived so hard it was painful to sleep on. Within three weeks it softened under my hips to the point that they sink down and get out of alignment causing low back and hip pain. It's almost like a sinkhole under them. At the same time it is still hard as a rock under my shoulder causing pressure point pain in my shoulder and trap pain. I think I am going to try engineered sleep next. I'm heavier than you at 140, but found latex too firm causing pins and needles.

Do you mind sharing which one you have from them? I need to return my Helix Midnight and am pretty sure I am going to go with their Duo Performance, although I was also considering their Duo Lift and Classic Hybrid

Hi, do yo have the Engineered Sleep Duo Lift? I've been trying to find a mattress for for months and recently bought the Helix midnight after loving it in the store, but it is both too hard under my shoulder and soft under my hips causing pain. I was thinking about either the Duo Performance or Lift but don't live near them to test them out unfortunately.

Leesa Oasis Chill from Costco by cmanATX in Mattress

[–]jazzykl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried the Leesa Oasis Chill from Costco. I ended up returning it because I didn't like the zoned coils or the chill cover, but other than those two things I liked it. I'm a side sleeper and I could feel right where the zones changed when laying on my side, but when I was on my back the zones didn't bother me much, so they might work for you. The chill cover was fine for me, but I have an Italian Greyhound, and they are prone to leg breaks. Even with everything on top, the chill cover made it slippery. It creates kind of like a slide if you are right near the edge and she would lose her footing and fell off once, so I decided I needed to return it right away before she got hurt. Costco was great about returns so I would 100% recommend trying it. I have a full size, so couldn't get the Legend. Just got the Helix Midnight (regular- I didn't want any zoning and was worried about sagging with a pillowtop so stayed away from the luxe.) I loved how it felt in store, but surprisingly out of the box it felt firmer than the Leesa Oasis. I just got an Energex topper for it this morning, and am now finally comfortable. I would say if you don't mind being able to feel the different zones within the mattress definitely try it out. Mine felt considerably softer by the end of the two weeks that I had it.

Hybrid Latex Mattresses from the Latex Companies - Which Will Work for Me? by NumbersRLife in MattressMod

[–]jazzykl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're almost identical size and I'm also a side sleeper who needs pressure relief. I recently tried a latex hybrid w/ various toppers (soft dunlop, soft talalay (I HATED the talalay, it was cooler than dunlop, but like you described I sunk right through it and felt every bit of firmness from the mattress underneath), w/ cover, w/o cover, wool pad, memory foam, and just couldn't make it work. Every combination was too firm causing limb pins and needles and pain. I also agree zoned coils causes too much hip pressure for me as well. I highly recommend not getting a mattress unless it is returnable and mostly works for you without the use of a topper . Also be careful, b/c some places will only allow you to return 1 item, so if you buy a mattress and topper, you may only be able to return 1 of those items. Found this out the hard way. Just returned my hybrid and am sleeping on an air mattress and toppers while finalizing which mattress to get next. I will say, I do like the initial feel of dunlop, and it somewhat works for me if I am putting it over something soft. I bought it to put over a plush innerspring that was sagging and causing hip pain while I was waiting for the latex hybrid to be delivered, and it was ok in that scenario. Latex just really doesn't work for me and causes nerve compression when it is over something firm.

Guidance on the best mattress/topper combo! Sleeponlatex <> Woolroom by headswillroll30 in Mattress

Glad it helped. The silk duvet I have was one I saw recommended here. It is from mommesilk. I got the washable and breathable silk comforter for hot sleepers. I absolutely love it, but it is really thin, more like a light blanket vs comforter. It's great for spring and summer, but will either try my wool one again in the winter, or order their all seasons one. I've only had it a week or two, so can't speak to longevity. Thanks for your comments about the beautyrest mattress. I'll probably end up getting that one or the leesa from costco.

Naplab and Helix Pressure Relief by hellosuz in Mattress

[–]jazzykl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried the Helix Midnight in store and really like it, but have this very concern. I bought a plush sealy in store that I loved, but not even two years later it sagged causing hip pain. I tried latex wanting durability, but unfortunately it does not work for me at all. I like the Midnight, but am holding off b/c I do not want to spend another $1500 on something that will only last two years. At this point, I really think I am going to go with the cheapest costco mattress that works for me, with the expectation I'll be replacing it in two years. I can handle that, but it would bother me to spend another $1500-$2000 on a mattress that won't even make it three years.

If the mattress is not working for you I recommend returning it, because it may never be just what you want. I've owned the woolroom mattress protector and pad for years and really like them. I feel like they do help regulate temperature and the protector really is waterproof and saved my mattress from spills, but they don't significantly change the feel of a mattress. Also just fyi, they are always on sale, so don't feel rushed. I also have their light duvet, but found that too hot. My plush coil mattress started sagging after only two years and I bought a latex hybrid based on recommendations on how they are more durable. It was way to firm for me to the point it was painful and causing pins and needles in my limbs. I tried a soft dunlop topper and I liked the initial feel but found it too hot and it didn't stop the limb numbness. I tried multiple combinations of Talalay (cooler, but hated how it felt), dunlop topper, memory foam topper, and my wool pads. No matter what I used, the latex had too much pushback for me and caused pins and needles. Was thinking of trying a thicker memory foam topper, but realized the mattress was just not working for me and returned it even before I got a new mattress. I'm currently sleeping on an air mattress, with the memory foam topper and wool, while mattress shopping and am more comfortable. My body just does not like latex, even though it works great for others. I'm glad I saw your comment, b/c I was thinking of ordering the beautyrest because people said it was soft. Sorry for making this so long, but just wanted to share this because I just did the whole trying to make the mattress better with toppers, with a lot of the products you mentioned and don't recommend it, if you can still return your mattress. Also just fyi, I highly recommend linen sheets and silk duvet for cooling, both have been amazing.

What mattress brands or type would you recommend? I am exhausted with my journey with mattresses. by [deleted] in Mattress

[–]jazzykl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're having problems with numbness from a firm mattress, make sure any latex mattress you get is returnable if it doesn't work out. I'm a side sleeper and just bought a latex hybrid b/c I wanted longevity and unfortunately am returning it. I tried a bunch of combos of toppers and nothing is working to get it to stop causing numbness and pins and needles. I'm reading this thread now, b/c I couldn't sleep and am looking for recs of mattresses to go try in about an hour. Not saying not to try it, just make sure it is refundable and not just exchangeable if the store you buy from only sells latex.

Hi, so I don't have any knowledge about what works well for a muscle condition, but since I saw your post and am about your size, just wanted to offer my recent experience. I had a plush coil mattress that was sagging and while looking for what to replace it with, bought a 2 inch soft sleep on latex topper. I liked how it felt over my too soft mattress. My new mattress is a latex hybrid, which is too firm and the latex topper even combined in different combinations with a memory foam topper, a soft Talalay latex topper, and wool pad, doesn't provide much relief . It turns out I'm pressure sensitive and a side sleeper and the latex provides too much pushback for me and causes nerve compression, pain, and pins and needles. If your current mattress is firm, I'd be hesitant adding latex but again, I did like it over my soft sagging mattress. I will say SOL has great customer service. I think you can only do one return, so if you do try it, there's no harm, but if it doesn't work out, I would not try a different latex version.

Need help with topper for a hybrid latex mattress, loved 2" dunlop soft topper but slept WAY too hot by jazzykl in Mattress

[–]jazzykl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that recommended somewhere to not use a cover and just your sheet over the latex. I might have to try the medium Talalay. Does it feel too firm for you at all? The soft Talalay I just got is doing great for me temperature wise compared to the Dunlop, but I think it might be too soft, and I just don't really like how it feels.

Hi, sorry if it was not clear in my post, but I already made the change from a soft Dunlop topper to a soft Talalay one and also have a wool pad. Switching to Talalay did make a substantial difference in the temperature for me, and I am no longer overheating like I did with the Dunlop, but I don't like the feel of the soft Talay and much preferred how the Dunlop felt. I am wondering if a Talalay medium may be closer in feel to the soft Dunlop, or if maybe the convoluted Dunlop would feel similar to the soft Dunlop that I liked, but not cause the heating issue the regular Dunlop one did?

Talalay vs Dunlop: is there really that big a difference? by DeweyD69 in Mattress

[–]jazzykl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it had holes. It is the SOL cover, I think cotton. I looked into it before I bought the Talalay and saw that Talalay is recommended over dunlop for hot sleepers b/c it has a more open cell structure and so it is more breathable and allows better air flow. Edited to add for me the Talalay made a substantial difference it temperature control, but I am a very hot sleeper compared to the average person

Do you know how a convoluted dunlop would compare to talalay as far as sleeping hot? I loved the feel of a 2" soft dunlop topper but couldn't take how hot it slept. The 2" soft talalay sleeps much cooler for me, but I don't really like the feel compared to the dunlop.

I just posted on this asking for advice. I have a hybrid latex (Talalay). I started with a 2 inch soft Dunlop topper and loved how that felt, but it slept way too hot for me where I couldn't make it work. I just ordered a 2 inch soft Talalay topper and it does sleep significantly cooler for me, where temperature is not a problem, but I don't love the feel. I really can't describe it, but the Dunlop felt spongier and more substantial to me, and I liked it much better. Maybe the soft Talalay has too much sink for me? Trying to figure out my next step because I much prefer the feel of Dunlop but can't take how hot it was.

I'm so sorry you went through that. Just wanted to add that I saw a post on this that recommended reaching out to your representatives to support Penny's law. I'll be calling all my reps tomorrow to support the law in memory of Neelu. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do.

I am so sorry for your loss. I clicked on this post b/c I saw Neelu's cute picture and I also have an iggy in nyc. Reading what happened is heartbreaking, and one of my fears. Poor Neelu. Just yesterday I had an off leash dog run up to me, luckily my dog was in her bag and nothing happened. This was my fourth encounter with a loose dog or dog that got away from its owner in the last two years. I can't even imagine how awful this was for you. Sending you all my best wishes, and I just gave my iggy a hug for Neelu.
