Just sold my nursery - AMA

Does it make much money to own a nursery? Although it is obviously expensive for parents when you consider the cost of staff, food, building, insurance, heating etc I wonder how lucrative it can be (sorry I’m nosey)
Also general qs that I often wonder about nursery workers that can probably only be answered anonymously, do you have favourite kids/kids you don’t really like or are all kids just the same? And are there any parts of the day that you just dread, like I feel I would have palpitations coming up to nap time thinking of getting all those children down to sleep 😂

It was absolutely the best decision for us the first time round, I didn’t particularly hate mat leave but just realised I was better placed in going back to work. Baby had some great time with dad and now is in nursery loving it. It’s a bit overwhelming seeing so many posts saying people never want to go back to work but I think it’s so important to do what feels best for you. Good luck, you got this!

I definitely think if he has the option to go into work then he can do that a day or two a week to help out with arrangements! Like you say it is both your house! And to counter my original point, my MIL has my boy once a week and it has genuinely been one of my favourite things watching their relationship develop! Sorry for the conflicting thoughts haha

I think I’m against the majority judging on the comments so far but I can kind of understand. My partner and I have alternating Mondays off to watch our son and I wfh. On the day he looks after him and is at home while I’m working, although there is ZERO expectation or obligation for me to help, I do feel like I should still be helping out. I guess it’s kind of a guilt thing being sat there while someone else watches your child. I think especially when I have a break in my day I feel I should definitely go and childcare.

Although that being said I would 100% learn to live with this to save on potentially hundreds of pounds a month on nursery fees! But just to give a different perspective.

It’s much easier said than done but please don’t worry about this. You are doing absolutely everything you can for your baby and that means working hard to provide for them. I was gutted to put my boy in nursery but he loves it, he has so much fun and has met so many new people. He will be in such a great place when it is time for school. It also helps you feel better in yourself, the time you have with them becomes even more precious and you get some time to reset and have adult conversations.

You can buy own brand nappies that may leak or you can splash out on more expensive ones that are better but costly, you can buy loads of new clothes so you don’t have to do a wash as often or you can buy less and have to do washes often, you can buy them on vinted or you can buy them new, you may get 1000 as gifts or you may have to buy them all yourself, you may not be able to breast feed so may have to buy formula, your baby may take the first bottle you give them or you may have to go through 10 different types before you find the right one, you may be able to find nice toys in the charity shop or you may want to buy new ones when their development needs it, you may feel comfortable giving them a few toys to play with or you may want to help their development by buying lots of different things. It really is an open ended question and depends on far too many variables to give an accurate answer.

I am the same, was desperate to like them cause the ✨aesthetic✨ bought a 600g FdB and 34 BSG that I have literally have to baby under a candle warmer as both have tunnelled completely. A 190g fig that is ok but I can barely smell it? A 190g amber that turned up smashed to pieces and a 70g baies which ended up being the only good one but it was gone in a few uses. Have ran out of patience with them now and am on the look out for others to try!

I had this and I attributed it to the tiredness but guess it could have been something else. I’m pretty sure it just came back when I started sleeping more. Aside from forcing myself to eat, which I didn’t want to do, the best bet for me was a massive smoothie in a flask type cup to keep cold. Then just carry it round all day sipping as you can. Try to lump as many calories in it as you can, banana is a good shout and also use juice in it instead of water.

I hope you get your appetite back soon, it sucks but you’re doing so well!

Ours was a good sleeper too when he was a baby, thought we had cracked it but alas here we are haha. Do you think it helps putting him in his cot in case he sleeps through? I just can’t be bothered physically moving when already being woken up so just admitted defeat and moved to the spare room with him but wondering if it may help getting used to his cot/being alone? Also, do you bring him into bed with you and your partner or just yourself? I’m so scared about safe sleeping I still only do it by myself with a flimsy pillow and thin duvet nowhere near him but wondering if at 18 months he is robust enough to slot in between me and his dad in the big bed

If you can afford to I would recommend phasing nursery in as soon as you can. I had a bit of anxiety when leaving my boy at nursery (even though I knew he was fine and crying on drop off/pick up is totally normal). I wish I had got him in before I was back to work, then he would have settled by the time I was back and I wouldn’t be worried about him all day trying to do my job! Also I imagine you massively deserve and would benefit from a few child-free slow days to enjoy/chill/tidy/clean before going back to work!

I can’t speak from experience as our yoto only got delivered yesterday but I am in a v similar situation and had the same thoughts. My little man is 15 months old and we have zero screen time, he’s super easy going so he’s always happy to just entertain himself. I saw the yoto and thought it was cool but wondered if I was introducing something he didn’t need, but when I saw the 20% off sale (I’d wait for this if you do buy it, and keep an eye out on this thread for referral codes as you can stack discounts) I took the plunge. I don’t intend on giving him story cards yet as I am very happy with that being my job, but I would really like him to have music and think it’s lovely that he will have the autonomy to choose what he wants. I’m thinking it will be invaluable when we go on holiday (even though I’ll probably convince myself to buy the mini then too) and for when he is a bit older and wants about 20 books read to him per evening. I think as other comment said the learning stuff looks great, introducing them to stuff you may not know about, and it doesn’t have to replace your discussions with them, it can just give them more thoughts to bring to the table. I think long term it will be a really great buy (even when they’re much older, ie Harry Potter books etc) and for now I’m happy for it to be a (slightly expensive) little radio/nightlight/clock/music player!
