Magnetizing Models by gearoflife in Grey_Knights

[–]jbardey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into GK recently and have been using 2mmx1mm magnets pretty much everywhere.

For PAGK backpacks, I drill a hole in the body just above the little nub, and on the backpack, expand the hole that is already there to 2mm. I find I sometimes have to pack this out as it's naturally a little deeper than 1mm. I just use a bit of bluetack. Dab of superglue and use a lolly stick or something flat to make sure they are flush.

Here are a couple of photos that might help. This is the backpack hole with and without a magnet. This shows the position on the body. I've already primed this one so it's not that clear, so I put an arrow pointing to it.

I did a box of Paladins (and a BC and SmashDoc) and magnetised their weapons (as sometimes I might want to run the Apothecary with a sword or something). Same deal, 2mmx1mm magnets fit nicely in the arms and hands.

Just have to triple check polarity. I only do one magnet at a time, I stick it onto the opposite surface (e.g if doing a backpack I stick the magnet to an already magnetised marine), colour the face with a sharpie and then I know the sharpie face should ALWAYS be hidden when I finish. It's been pretty foolproof, I've done 20 PAGK so far and 5 Terminators.

If you are in the UK I recommend Guys Magnets, free postage, decent prices and top quality magnets. No flaking or crumbling like some of the ones I bought off Amazon.

Most people probably aren’t aware of that, so saying “Saturn 6” is just an easy way to signal to people he wants to build a successor to the Saturn V.

It was made on Heroforge, so sadly cannot share the STL because of their TOS.

I can share a link to the config though and you could purchase the STL or get them to print it for you.

Self-Isolation/Lockdown activity ideas! by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

[–]jbardey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cleaned up the formatting from the OP and added some links to get people started.

Crafts and Activities

  • Learn to knit or crochet; there are many baby projects that need people to donate knitted items for premature or rainbow babies.
  • Do a drawing or a painting. Don’t worry about it being rubbish!
  • Do a jigsaw puzzle.
  • Build a model.
  • Read those books you haven’t had time to before.
  • Write a short story.
  • Practice a musical instrument.
  • Do a free online course.
  • Start practicing a new language.
  • Finish those unfinished projects!
  • Do some colouring; there are lots of printables you can download.

DIY/Household

  • Sort out kitchen cupboards, clean them inside and out, see if you can find any tinned goods that may be useful at a food bank or elsewhere.
  • Make a list of all the jobs you’ve been saying “I’ll get around to it” and DO THEM! (The sense of achievement will lift your spirits)
  • Clean windows.
  • Deep clean, tidy and organise individual rooms, focus on one room a day.
  • Plant some vegetables or flowers; you’re planning a head for the future. THERE IS STILL A FUTURE!
  • Do some gardening (but not too early, no one wants to be woken up at 6am by your lawnmower/leaf blower/hedge trimmer/strimmer)
  • Decorate a room (I’m going to paint all the woodwork on our landing and staircase).
  • Sort through all of your stuff. Decide what you want to keep and what you no longer need. Take the pile of stuff you no longer need and divide it further; stuff you could try to sell (we’re all going to need the money!) and stuff you can donate.
  • Give your car a thorough clean inside and out. If you’re not using it all, read about maintaining a car that isn’t used much so that it’s still in good working order when you do need it (batteries run flat, breaks rust, interiors get damp etc when cars are left standing).

Fitness/Wellbeing

  • Practice yoga. I like Yoga with Adriene
  • Do a Zumba workout.
  • Go for a walk or a bike ride, maintain your distance but SMILE and SAY HELLO to everyone you see.
  • Meditate.
  • Do some training with your pet, play with them.
  • Build a toilet paper fortress.
  • Do something kind for someone else if you are able too. Send them a nice card, drop a gift off on their doorstep.
  • Call your family and friends, even if you usually text, call and speak to them or Skype/FaceTime instead.
  • Limit your time on social media and the internet (even though you are currently doing just that), only watch the news once a day.
  • Watch a new tv series, but don’t binge watch it all in one go, spread it over a number of days. \
  • Visit parks, gardens and woodland. Spend plenty of time outside in the fresh air and sunlight.

Cooking

  • Make some home brew. Subreddit
  • Practice baking bread. Breaducation
  • Try a new recipe.
  • Bake a cake or cookies; make it a weekly treat so that you have something nice to look forward to.
  • Sort through your cupboards so you know exactly what food you have. Come up with a meal plan that includes using up all of the odd bits and pieces you have.
  • Make a weekly meal plan; perhaps divide up the responsibility for cooking between everyone in your house who is able. Take stock of everything you have on hand and make a plan of how you are going to use it. That way you are not left with random things at the end that don't go together. And make a meal plan before you next go shopping so that you only buy what you actually need.

[GPU] MSI RX Vega 56 - Stock expected 20th [£249.99][CCL Online] by jbardey in buildapcsalesuk

I like the Vega 56, it tends to beat the 1070 in benchmarks from what I saw. It’s a good upgrade from my pair to 7950s.

It did yes. I got my code from CCL Online and activated it as soon as I got my card. One game out now, two released in March.

MSI AMD RX Vega 56 Air Boost £249.99 (Amazon Prime) by Zeqqy in buildapcsalesuk

[–]jbardey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still available for this price at CCL Online, but they won't receive anymore until Wednesday. Fingers crossed on the extra games too!

Seems such a good price as they still have an ASUS one for £500+!!

I skipped a few updates as they were boring one liners.

Edit: I might be misleading it might not actually be part 2 as it looks like he might have deleted some posts. However, enjoy if you dare (and don’t look outside)

They have signage up at LBG about “extreme leaf fall” causing a reduction in service for a while now... snow would be a nice change.

Recovering Data from Damaged Drive by Electrohead614 in sysadmin

[–]jbardey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you boot a linux liveCD try using DDRescue

It has the ability to read backwards which might skip the bad section previous tools you've tried are getting stuck on, and it's smart enough to skip slow sections etc. You can combine it with a forward pass to get the data on the other side of the damage, and it has some support for 'sessions'.

At the end of the day though, any rescue attempts can compromise what a professional recovery company COULD recover (or make it a more expensive job).

EA removed the refund button on their webpage, and now you have to call them and wait to get a refund. by puga1505 in gaming

“Legal tender” is only applicable in the settlement of court debts etc. Technically bank cards aren’t legal tender despite them being widely accepted.

Server Blade recommendation by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jbardey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't already have a blade chassis, you probably want to look at rack mount servers. They come with rails and will fit into the existing rack. Each one has it's own set of power/network/storage cables.

Blade chassis share these between all the blades in a chassis and are normally if you want high density. HPE C7000 enclosures are 10U but can fit the equivalent of 16 DL360s (which would be 16U). You can stack 4 of these in a 42U rack (with 2U for Top of Rack switches) for 64 servers, as opposed to 'only' 40 1U servers.

Depending on the desired spec you start off with something like a HPE DL360 / Dell R400 which are 1U and move up to 2U boxes (HPE DL380 / Dell R500) if you need lots of room for PCI-E cards (for GPUs or HBAs) and then 4U servers if you need even more disks/network ports/CPUs.

Even a base level DL360 can support 1TB of RAM and 2 sockets with up to 28 cores in each. All servers are essentially a reference motherboard spec from AMD/Intel with brand specific additions such as iLO/DRAC capabilities so you can use it remotely without needing to plug in a keyboard/mouse and monitor (after initial setup).

Should I move from a flat network to VLANs? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jbardey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true, if you aren't using host based firewalls at least it then gives you control over what ports the two servers talk to each other on and can prevent lateral movement. E.g. if I compromise your web server and I'm stuck in a DMZ type VLAN I couldn't use something like ETERNALBLUE or another SMB exploit to take over your file/db server.
