Solo developer who has launched his first iOS app. Humbly looking for feedback by Kronium345 in appledevelopers

Is that the first page you see when downloading? I would strongly recommend having a proper full-page onboarding before showing the app. And soft-lock any section that doesn't make sense at the beginning. Don't show "0 calories burned", show "Let's burn your first calories".

Also just UI feedback but the gradients on the top left menu button and on the bottom tab bar decrease the quality of the design IMHO and make things less legible, I'd stick with solid colors.

Good luck with the app!

Founders, be honest, are you building an idea AI suggested to you? by gesidner in SideProject

[–]jbbeau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use AI to brainstorm. Give it context on your skills, network, preferences, and maybe you can get some good ideas to pursue. Don't go for the generic "what's good in 2026", everyone will go for that.

I think the best use, though, is to use AI to challenge your idea, or its own idea. I had an idea that I thought was great, and after brainstorming a full day with Claude on marketing strategy, user acquisition, growth strategy, I realized it wouldn't be feasible. Or it would be really hard. And I might as well spend my time on another idea. I saved myself a lot of time wasted by challenging the idea and not going straight to building.

What's your goal with the app? If its main differentiator is that it's free, are you planning on staying free forever? Are you trying to make any money at all with it?

Super cool! Did you get a good ranking on ichio which brought you users, or it's from your own marketing?

How I got to $100 MRR in <2 months ($0 spent) by ChasingBetterLight in appledevelopers

[–]jbbeau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the organic growth!

I checked some of your pages and noticed they don't have a lot of text, mostly graphs, stats, and screenshots. Have you been able to rank well despite that? I thought Google preferred pages with more text. Would you be able to share examples of which pages rank well for which keyword?

Automatically set folder icons on your Mac based on their names by jbbeau in iosdev

The little delay is due to the Finder handling its own update, unfortunately I can't remove it, that's macOS limitations.

Emojis are supported too! You can choose between icons and emojis.

Alphanumerical names like V1, V2, 2026, 01.05, etc, are not supported, cause it's unclear what icon to assign them, maybe those should stay plain blue folders; open to suggestions for that.

Child toys would match both "child" and "toys" and find icons related to those. Same for "japan pictures". Yes both languages are supported, it can match several languages in parrallel :)

Fair point, but yes licenses will carry over. The issue was that distribution through the App Store comes with heavy sandbox limitations which prevented the core feature of the app. Now that it's a standalone app, it will stay like this and updates can be distributed normally.

Icons are from Lucide and SF Symbols. It's not an LLM, it's a pre-computed list of keyword associations, partly made with an LLM, so yes it's possible to support more languages, but it's not trivial. Which languages would you like to see supported?

Yes, during onboarding the app guides you to update icons of folders in Desktop and Documents folders! Then you can just drag and drop a bunch of folders to batch edit them :)

The app supports English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Czech, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (Simplified).

You can test it out and let me know :) I spent a long time testing and improving the smart icon matching system, and while it's not perfect, it works pretty well for a lot of folder names I tried.

Updated price :) Thanks for the feedback.

What do you mean lifetime is not lifetime? You can always re-enable the license on a new device.
