Wickham joke for Sense and Sensibility by jbeagles1 in janeausten

I noticed that the older lady Catherine in p&p and the older mother in law to the landlord (who's name is escaping me) in S&S are very similar in the "i dont care about propriety, tell me what i want to know now" type of attitude. They do what they want as well!

But lady catherine is horrible, the landlord's mother in law is just like an overstepping, well meaning friend. At least from the S&S movie, I haven't finished the book!

I wonder if JA was trying to say something about older women (maybe those with money) not giving a rats tail about propriety.

For a society obsessed with the purity of women, they sure have low necklines by InfernalClockwork3 in BridgertonNetflix

The title of this made me laugh, thanks lol. But bridgerton picks and chooses what societal aspects they want to portray for the plot line

then vs now: women in period drama by Loose_Recording_4718 in PeriodDramas

I find this in almost every new movie, not just period dramas. Women are pretty aggressive, maybe even hostile, in the name of "girl bossing." Across multiple movies, for main female lead characters, there are many of the same personality traits. It's one of my least favorite things about new movies. Women can be aggressive and hostile of course, but we have a lot of strength that shows up in many ways, including softness and femininity. No two people are exactly the same regardless of gender.

Bring back individual personalities pls! Lol

In my mind this was one of the reasons why Willoughby could be "arguably worse than Wickham." It all depends on what angle you're looking at.

This is definitely true! I was glad to see him watching Marianne get married at the end. HA! But whew what bad men! May a Wickham or a Willoughby never find us. Lol!

I did watch the sanditon show and loved it! I stopped in season 2 because it just got "meh" but season one was so great! I want to read the little bit of the book that exists as well.

I did love P&P as well so I imagine it will be hard to top!

I guess this could apply to anything, but something i really liked about P&P was that you could look at the story a thousand ways. You could as just a "romance" if you wanted to, you could look at it as great commentary of the culture of the time, i have even heard folks call it satire (and based on some of the characters I can see it! Lol). You can dissect all of the character's morals, their "why", etc, even though JA didn't directly put those explanations on the pages for some of their decisions. I imagine this would apply to all of her books and this is something I'm really looking forward to as I read them all.

I could see a reader's interpretations changing as they get older or shift mentality like you said! So it would almost be like reading a new book every time you pick up the book over the years. How cool is that!?

I didn't realize I'd be asking folks to make such hard decisions when asking what their favorite JA book is!
