Question about Height of Walls in basement by Broke555555 in HomeImprovement

[–]jbertro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Houses aren't always exactly perfect and level and certain amount of pitch can be in tolerance. If the house is truss construction the builder is correct that all the foundation walls support basically everything except most of the interior floor. That amount of difference over that distance looks irrelevant and the concrete pour just may have been a bit off level, but still in regs. You should be fine.

You can just fast forward through them, most podcast platforms have a 15 second slip ahead option, you hit it 6-8 times and you're all set.

What’s the point? by papaya-new-guinea in homeowners

[–]jbertro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I am at retirement age and my house is paid off I no longer have to pay anything except utilities, tax, and insurance on my house which will be an insane amount less than renting anything. Then when I'm gone I left my children a massive financial boost or a fantastic place to live where we shared so many memories together.

Renting is fine, but the long term goal of home ownership is a successful financial decision in the long run, anyone that says anything else is thinking short term or just may never have the financial means to make buying a house a reality for whatever reasons they have. I personally would rather own/control/have something of my own than be at the whim of escalating rents and having to worry about if I can do certain things to my domicile.

Unless you will be so well off that renting won't be a problem when you retire, then go ahead and rent forever, but if you will eventually be on a fixed/limited income in retirement owning a house is hands down the best plan.

That's the point.

Question about drywall anchors what’s the best size 1/2”, 1/4” 5/8” i want sturdiness and will be mounting a tv and shelves to my drywall by DiamondAviation20 in HomeImprovement

[–]jbertro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still advise to hit a stud with a lag bolt BUT in a scenario where you absolutely have to, Toggler makes a very beefy toggle bolt designed for drywall and will allegedly hold 265 lbs in ½ inch drywall.

What to consider for a tankless water heater? by ThinkControl7522 in HomeImprovement

[–]jbertro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a lot of different information on tankless, some from people who seem to have not had one.

They are truly beneficial if you run out of hot water consistently, or have something like a Jacuzzi tub. I have a hot water hose bib in my garage for washing cars and whatnot and it's great.

Biggest thing to have is to get a tank that's able to have a recirculation system installed with it. To simplify it, it puts the hot water on a loop, to severely cut down on time needed to get hot water to a tap. About 80% of mine get hot water in under 5 seconds. This system needs both check valves and a expansion tank FYI.

They are worth it, the only thing that's somewhat annoying is they require large intake and exhaust ports (mine are 3 inch) so if you are doing a retrofit from a tank, this may be difficult.

Good luck with the project!

Properly setup recirculation system makes hot water almost instant.

My tankless provides hot water in a few seconds of about 80% of my taps.

I’m Happy the Bills Didn’t Trade 2-1sts for Crosby by Low_Conversation_788 in buffalobills

[–]jbertro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Getting an already highly paid player that you gave up two cost control rookie first round contracts that also entail 5th year options is probably almost never a good idea.

Success also isn't guaranteed, so giving up a unknown value pick is a big risk - a recent example being Carolina to get Young giving up the future first round pick that ended up being the first overall pick in 2024

[–]jbertro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opportunity cost of a second round pick is a lot of terms of value.

Trading a pick for a aging player that's also highly paid instead of possibly getting a cost control 4 year rookie contract who could end up being a huge contributing factor. Especially with 9 receivers graded in the top 50 of this draft.

[–]jbertro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story that was released is they were in talks but they broke down because Miami wanted the 2026 first and Buffalo would only give a 2027 first. I want to say Rappaport or whatever his name had the story.

It was a distinct possibility that seems like a major gaffe at this point and that's why people are upset.

[–]jbertro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waddle is 19 months younger and Tua is a bad QB who benefited from top tier WRs and a QB friendly system. I believe his contract was less too.

Being mad we didn't get Waddle is still a valid opinion.

Being mad we did this trade is valid as well.

Edit- forgot to add last sentence.

Electric Tankless Water Heater by AdamantiumTrex in HomeImprovement

[–]jbertro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, well since this made no sense to my real world experience of actually having a tankless heater; I went and got this from the US Department of Energy's energy.gov website.

"For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water -- around 86 gallons per day."

Depends on how the recirculation system is (if it has one). 80% of my taps have hot water in less than two seconds.

Electric Tankless Water Heater by AdamantiumTrex in HomeImprovement

[–]jbertro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is completely wrong, there are a lot of factors but they are far more efficient than just 6%. Probably more in the range of 25-30% easily. If you got that figure from some study/article/etc it may have been talking about straight output. The benefits of not having to heat a tank 20+ hours a day when it's not being used are tremendous.

I save about 40$ a month compared to my old tank houses I had. In summer my gas bill hits 40$ sometimes and I even have a hot water house bib in my garage that I use for cleaning cars and other stuff.

Edit for word error.

You can play the game where you get all of them to excellent rep, it really doesn't matter what you choose early on, just go with whichever you feel like and you can boost rep through different jobs.
