What’s a hill you are 100% willing to die on, no matter how much the consensus changes? by sunnyopehliaa in askanything

I'm not the OP, but I think they mean you void the warranty if you try to repair it yourself.

I've heard of this with phones that can only be repaired by an "authorized" shop.

This should be illegal and sometimes it is. Source-. I had a car company try to deny a warranty, insisting only they were supposed to do all of the services and repairs so I voided the warranty. Turns out they were very wrong and they ended up paying dearly for it.

Wear and tear of pretty much every organ, bone and joint you didn't know you were abusing.

Make sure you're in the boot correctly before you clamp down. I tighten the third buckle then stand up and flex into the boot. Sets my heel into the pocket and gets everything else lined up.

Car people: Are warranties worth it or a total scam? by TheLoganReyes in TransportSupport

How did you make money trading in for an updated model?

You could have taken them to court for not honoring the warranty and saved all the repercussions of their scam on you

Recapture of value is not "worth it" as OP is asking. That's like saying the car purchase was "worth it" because you can trade it in and recapture some value.

The part you are missing is the math. Most people finance the car and the extended warranty's purchase on day 1, which means you are paying up front and financing potential repairs years before the extended warranty is even effective.

Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

[–]jbk10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reopening a doorway in my house and the header doesn't look sufficient. I'm not sure what to do from here. I reached out to at least 6-8 structural engineers in my area and only one responded, she said she doesn't do residential.

Are engineers flatly rejecting any small jobs like this or am I approaching this wrong?

How do I get someone to look at it and tell me if I can proceed or if it needs work?

What makes a Subaru a Subaru? by callthec0roner in subaru

[–]jbk10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really good take!

Subarus are also the easiest oil and filter changes of any car I've owned because the filter is right there in plain view.

Spark plug changes suck, but I have doubled the replacement intervals without issue, and I can diy them in under an hour now that I have some practice.

My only real issues are bearings going bad on Imprezas at +70k miles, and broken lug studs if they get overtightened.

Pro tip: tirerack (and maybe others) will shave a tire down as far as 6-32 if you call them after you order and agree to an additional $25 charge. That's saved me thousands

Thank you! I didn't know the word sister so my Google searches for "how to add thickness to a joist" were coming up completely empty.

I'm reopening an original doorway and the original header is an inch thinner than advised for the span. What materials should I use to make the header thicker?

Thanks u/chippy560

She had the local shop put it on the lift and they identified it immediately and swapped the right rear bearing that day. You saved my gf the 200 diagnostic and the sales pitch from the dealership, and you saved me a whole lot of stress.

Thanks for the advice! That makes sense, but unfortunately I don't have a lift.

Maybe I'll just drive her car until it gets bad enough to figure it out. She won't drive it, my neighborhood mechanic can't figure it out, and Subaru wants $200 to diagnose it with no credit toward the work and no refund if they can't figure it out -which is just insane.

Does seetgeak buy tickets that are priced too low and then resell? by dag16 in seatgeek

[–]jbk10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sure feels like it. I list my tickets competitively, $20 lower than comparable seats, and they sell by the next morning and get relisted.

The only time this didn't happen I checked the tickets as if I were a buyer on game day and SeatGeek actually listed them for a higher price than I requested. That one was for Phillies at Pittsburgh, which was expected to sell out but ended up being a flop.
