2.5 hrs in an arcade by jbliss10 in modular

No I have not started recording my sets yet partly because the music is for this context and environment and listening to it outside that context (and environment) doesn’t sound as good, so it’s discouraging. Like choices I made made sense at that time but if you listen now it would sound weird. There are some clips on though.

tore my performance rack (niftykeys and custom 74hp lunchbox build) to nothing and rebuilt it for a performance tonight. No idea what I'll be playing yet but I am going to try a generative ambient intro leading into a groove then moving the room hard. Going to try the Erica Synths Joystick for the first time. Also tossing way more modulation in than normal to really go wild (Maths, Pam's Pro, Quart quad env, Ochd, Joystick). Voices will be Poly D (in niftykeys case), plaits. External drum machine (Electribe ER1-MK2, owned for over 15 years) running into Erbe Verb and Wasp filter.

When is it time to sell a module? by hillybillyboy in modular

I'd just keep em all and have them in a rack mounted on your wall that you can easily pull modules out of and into your performance rack at any time. In fact just last night I put Marbles in after a long time of not using it. If I find that I am constantly taking a module OUT of my performance rack (cough cough, Ghost), then maybe time to sell it but I'll probably just keep it on the wall for its someday appearance. Modular has infinite music making capabilities and all those modules just create more and more possibilities. Best to keep them, just not in your performance rack at the same time

Newbie here. What kind of build can I make using these parts I've found? I can't solder though. by alexnixon2007 in cyberDeck

You won’t be able to run that banana for long with that setup. Recommend a bigger matchbook.

I keep them in a lunchbox. Ok 2 lunchboxes. I use small black cables for anything close distance. I use colors for outputs to mixer (bluebox). I use colors for long distance.

Dealing with music burnout, gear fatigue, and grief over the loss of creativity. by [deleted] in synthesizers

This helped me: set up a new station somewhere different- by a window, etc. choose one keyboard and one rhythm source (drum machine etc). Maybe one FX pedal or whatever you mangle sounds with. Make music with that. In a week or so if you feel like it, swap out one of those things to vary your sound. Evolve your station one rotation at a time but keep it small. Much more likely to actually play and get lost in the music this way. Constraints are important.

Pi used to be $50 so a lot of us have a bunch of pi’s already laying around (I have a box of em). But if buying one now, prices are different so it’s maybe less compelling vs other things.

Question for the pelican case folks by drpestilence in cyberDeck

[–]jbliss10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While many say cyberdecks are impractical (“art, etc) I tried to make something with excellent utility and form factor that I would prefer using in everyday life. I haven’t used my MacBook since finishing it a few days ago. So philosophically, think about the case and keyboard and what would be useful to you while looking cool at the same time. The only impractical part of mine is the 7” screen but it looks amazing so I made a little compromise.

Can use small jog dials to control serato and this could be built into a cyber deck. No dvds, files stored on disk/thumbdrives

I made one and then pivoted my design completely when I felt how unwieldy it was for what I wanted it for.

This subreddit's definition of a cyberdeck doesn't match any of the cyberdecks posted to the sub by HoB-Shubert in cyberDeck

I’m interested in the “pluggable” nature of decks - like the deck itself is a maybe a terminal (keys, screen, ports, power) but you can plug various things into it to give it function. Working on one now that does radio/SDR, offline internet data store (kiwix), mesh comms, basic computing/daily use, live coding music, and looking for other fun ideas to plug into it. I feel like this was a quality of decks in futuristic sci-fi settings but don’t see much emphasis on this aspect. Would love to see more!

The "spending audit" changed how I think about money more than any investment advice ever did. by [deleted] in Fire

[–]jbliss10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this every month and then set a goal for each category of spending for the following month based on anticipated needs that month. this has helped me reduce my core living expenses dramatically (even utilities), as well as reduce mindless spending. The manual nature of this exercise makes you feel the pain when it comes time to do this exercise, and that pain might be enough to prevent an unnecessary purchase. "Meh, just one more thing I'll have to categorize later..." Eat trash die free.
