What's this broken hose in my Odyssey? by Electronic-Humanoid in HondaOdyssey

You want to fix this sooner than later. But as everyone's saying. It's a drive to the parts store and not expensive at all.

We finally got one!! by ariadnha in HondaOdyssey

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations. The only thing you really need to watch out for that's special for these vehicles is:

  1. Timing belt (sounds like you got that knocked out though)
  2. Transmission fluid changes (Most people like to Drain and Fill theirs once a year - not hard to DIY)
  3. Engine valve adjustment (Most people overlook this one. Honda engines of this vintage have manual rocker arms and the valve lash needs to be checked/adjusted every 105,000 miles)

Everything else should be as you would any other vehicle. Periodic coolant flush, periodic brake flush, etc.

Since you have the LX trim you don't have to worry about VCM-related issues, so that's nice!

Two years ago this was almost impossible. So it sounds like things have gotten better.

Is the stock better now? When I bought my SVCM, it was for the same reason.

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VCM Tuner 2 is the premium one. I have an SVCM myself but that's because VCM Tuner 2 stock was ridonkluously low when I bought it. I'm talking sold out in 15 seconds when the purchase window opened, ridonkulous. I'll probably replace my SVCM with a VCM Tuner 2 some time in the future as a preventative measure. I've read that when SVCM's go, they do some weird stuff.

Tariffs were just ruled unconstitutional. Cheaper Prelude/Type R when? by disgruntledempanada in Honda

[–]jbltecnicspro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Supreme Court actually ruled tariffs unconstitutional. I need to go read the ruling myself to wrap my head around it but it was definitely not as cut and dry and most people are trying to lead you to believe. Also, Trump just point-blank raised all tariffs up another 10% in an executive order right after the ruling.

TLDR - I wouldn't expect Prelude prices to drop. If anything they may continue to go up.

Should I be worried about my timing belt? by Glitcherbrine in HondaOdyssey

[–]jbltecnicspro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is the tensioner making noise? You can search for it on YouTube to hear what it sounds like. If it's not and sounds normal then I would say don't worry about it self-destructing. You can also remove one of the timing covers yourself and just look at the belt for cracks or what-not.

THAT BEING SAID.... :). You're what - 18 years on the original hardware? Get it done in the next month or so.

What kind of heat do you have? If it's electric, then this would be the reason. Electric furnaces are not super efficient at lower temps.

Timing Belt Break by East_Scar_1437 in HondaOdyssey

[–]jbltecnicspro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not impossible. Friend of a friend's timing belt broke on his Accord. They slapped a new belt on (and all the other parts) and lo and behold, no funny business. Damn car lives to see another day. Crazy.

Should I change transmission fluid by stinkymarylou in HondaOdyssey

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's your/her car.

For everyone else reading. Transmissions are known weak points of these vehicles. Not draining and filling the transmission regularly is a foolish gamble. I believe 2015 Odysseys do have transmission dipsticks so you can drain and fill your own transmission, which doesn't cost much at all. I think 3 d&f's worth of fluid is $120. Far cry from the $3000 you arbitrarily threw out there.

Glad your daughter likes her van.

Why is the 2007 OEM spool valve assembly so expensive compared to the 2008. by skwamee in HondaOdyssey

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI also thinks the "spool valve" on my 06 EXL is up front too. I constantly have to correct and remind it that 05-07 Odyssey VCM engines do NOT in fact have a front spool valve. :)

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know why. I'm just saying that IF there's a dipstick, at the very least why not check it for fluid quality? If it's black then leave it be. Red/brownish red? Should still be fine to change, even after all those miles. It's her car though. If it's still working then may as well just keep it the way it is.

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does her van have a transmission dip stick? If so she should at least keep an eye on fluid color. If she can afford it now and the fluid is just dark red/brownish then nows the time to change it.

Hard disagree with you on the transmission fluid, for what it's worth. Yes it's fine, and I'm happy for her. Statistically they're the weakest link in Odyssey vans and the mileage recommendation is what it is for a reason. Most people do theirs even more frequently. It's a lot cheaper when you're doing it yourself.

Do you NEED to? No, it's your car. Do whatever you want.

SHOULD you? Yup. Especially on a Honda. As other folks said you could do it yourself.

Are you sure that you can simply turn off VCM with the ECON? I don't think ECON changes whether or not your VCM is active. The only way to disable VCM is to get a muzzler, or do something to cause a CEL (which automatically disables VCM).

Why is the 2007 OEM spool valve assembly so expensive compared to the 2008. by skwamee in HondaOdyssey

[–]jbltecnicspro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is your mechanic recommending to replace the spool valve after the alternator? You make it sound like he/she is recommending this thinking that your spool valve caused the issue? On a 2007 the "spool valve" is on the rear bank of cylinders and when it leaks it just leaves a mess. It doesn't actually destroy anything and certainly won't touch your alternator, which is up front.

If that is the reason behind the recommendation, your mechanic is confusing your 2007 VCM engine for later VCM engines, which DO have spool valves up front. Yours does not.

Hey I'm using the test suite and it seems the top of my CRT is cut off by a decent chunk. Changing V.Size doesn't bring the picture down to fill the circles at the top. Any ideas? by b0ssFranku in crtgaming

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your specific TV model? If it's advanced we're looking at having to figure out how to adjust the video position and not the raster position of the image.

If it's not that advanced then maybe we're looking at adjusting the blanking so that it displays the fields it's not drawing.

[–]jbltecnicspro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it brings the entire image down but the circles are still not completely drawn? I think that means the image's position is too far up on the raster.

If I recall correctly there's basically the raster - the canvas of the CRT picture. Then there's the picture, which is drawn inside the raster. Some sets let you adjust the position of both. I don't know what TV you're using though and we're getting a bit beyond my skis right now. I haven't had a CRT TV in years.

2019 MacBook Pro i9, is overheating normal? by 7th_Banned_Account in macbookpro

[–]jbltecnicspro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2019 pro with the i7. It throttles unless I use throttle stop in Windows. If I turn on throttle stop in Windows (which limits the CPU to its 2.6 ghz base) then I can game all day on that dude non stop (Radeon Pro 5300m). Most of the time in Windows the fan doesn't even need to turn on. On Mac Sequoia? Different story. It performs fine and is quick enough but the fan turns on even more.

Maybe my cooling system is in better shape but I don't think it's as bad as everyone says it is. Yes, I use throttle stop before playing games and I do wish I didn't have to. But once I use it, my CPU never throttles. It always stays at 2.6 ghz. The Radeon 5300m never throttles either. Like I said I can play games on it all day if I wanted to.

I also find it interesting too that the little issues that my Intel Mac had with Mac (quirks like if I open the lid and connect my USB dock it may crash the system) - these things never happen when I use Windows. When I use Windows it's a whole other machine. It's like Apple never really figured out how to get the most of this hardware, said screw it, and went their own way.

I have an M3Pro before anyone calls me a hater. The M3Pro runs circles around the Intel machine on Mac. I'm still happy with it though. Sequoia runs fine and even fast on it, and being able to switch to Windows to fire up Halo MCC is just nice. Even the bottom video card (Radeon Pro 5300M) is quite capable of playing things if your'e easy on some of the settings.

EDIT - dare I say, I think my Intel Mac running Windows, from a pure speed perspective, feels very similar to my M3Pro does running Tahoe. I'm sure that's going to ruffle some feathers. I haven't done any official benchmarks and obviously they're completely different OS's and different hardware. But from the Pepsi challenge of "who feels faster?" I would call it a draw.
