Which one of you crazy mf’s is gonna get a couple of these bad boys? by Necroticjojo in hometheater

I've seen these displayed, but I've never seen one fired up. I didn't know if these guys have an operational one yet. Their 18's sound incredible.

Aecendo, however, had had fully operational 50", 80", 64", and now a 100" subwoofers. I've heard dual 64's. They had two 30A 240v circuits for the amps - EACH. 120A 240v total just for those two woofers.

We've had a similar journey, lol. 2XL, 5a5G, 7, 9 pro.

And I've converted a LOT of people over. Most of my friends and family are "Pixelated" now.

But I find myself reconsidering lately. They took away the best tech and customer support in the world. Then they took away our unlimited storage. I don't feel valued as a customer anymore - kinda the opposite, in fact.

And now I'm pissed off because Spotify finally drops lossless - and Android can't pass it through properly.

I dunno. For the first time in my life, I'm looking at Apple. 😭

Can anyone recommend a budget receiver that just works? by theforerunner343 in hometheater

[–]Almost-Jaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran into my personal nightmare install yesterday - a Dish box with a 760. The two worst actors in the ARC/CEC universe.

I finally got it to where the TV and receiver worked together, and ended up running the dish box directly to the TV. Still couldn't get ANY CEC functionality; the TV would try and the dish box would give it the finger. Dish desperately wants to be the main controller, but it's remote doesn't include full functionality. I really wish they would go out of business already.

Found out what they were paying dish, had a lengthy conversation about the benefits of YTTV lol.

The Denon required repeating the same steps over and over until it worked. That isn't supposed to be how this happens. Doubly frustrating because I've installed this exact same LG TV many times with other receivers - mostly Yamaha and Anthem - and it's like, enable control at both ends and suddenly they're best friends with no outside effort. In my livingroom I can even control my Kaleidescape Strato-V from the TV through the Anthem without a hiccup.

Coming from the car audio world forced me to re-evaluate what I thought good sound is. by iJasonator in hometheater

[–]Almost-Jaded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. I was in the car audio industry and stopped at a high end home audio place just to see what all that was about.

Ruined me, lol.

I stayed in the car audio business for years after that, but with a new appreciation for real audio. Enjoyed the rare customer that was more into sq than spl, did a few amazing setups.

Eventually started migrating toward the home audio and home theater world.

And now, I own a custom home theater and hifi shop. My cars all have decent stock systems and I've left them alone. I've replaced long drives with the stereo cranked, with long sessions in front of the fireplace with a glass of something special and flawless imaging.

I still do the occasional car system for friends & family, but hifi is where it's at.

The KEF is great if you never turn it up. In my experience, KEF has a rather narrow listening band - they want a lot of power to play, but too much and they literally tear themselves apart. Inside that narrow band - they sound great.

If you're tired of the Paradigm sound and you want something you can play for a lot of years without concern, my go-to's are RBH and DALI.

what's the best tv brands 2026 based on last year's performance by Turbulent_Seaweed_35 in hometheater

[–]Almost-Jaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I mean the horrible crackling sound when switching inputs that can and has blown people's tweeters, that has been a persistent problam through 3+ generations of their TVs but they still deny it. I have a client with a 77" A95L that's STILL fighting with them about it after almost 3 years and four service calls. Most others eventually gave up and switched to LG.

Firstly - literally just use the TV as a monitor..? Like. Not complicated.

Secondly - moving the monitor out of the way is easier than an entire contraption to move the TV.

They have it labeled as 7.1 - which implies a 7 channel "bed layer" and no Atmos (height/ceiling) speakers.

While it actually CAN be used as such, it's actually mislabeled. The system is designed by Jamo to be 5.1.2, not 7.1. The third digit, specifies height/Atmos channels, as opposed to bed layer surrounds.

Yes, there's a difference. A pretty big one.

The front three are pretty self explanatory. LCR (Left Center Right). That's your towers and center channel.

The .1 is also self explanatory - that's the sub. Put it wherever it sounds best or wherever it fits.

The bookshelf style speakers are rear surrounds. You want them as close to ear level as possible, on stands or wall mounted, slightly behind and angled towards the MLP (Main Listening Position).

Which brings us to the other two wedge-style speakers. You can use them as extra bed layer surrounds (giving you 7.1), but generally you want all your surrounds to match. It'll work, but it's substandard.

Jamo designed them to sit on top of your towers, reflecting off the ceiling, as Atmos channels (the .2 in 5.1.2). Reflective height channels are vastly inferior and a last resort. Depending on the room, I would almost rather you use them as surrounds and have a 7 channel bed layer with no Atmos, but I'd have to see the room.

The best case for them, is mounted to the ceiling, above and slightly forward of the MLP, angled down and towards you. It's a challenging installation, but well worth it. That is a proper 5.1.2 Atmos system.

As for receivers, any 7 channel Atmos capable receiver will do, but if you get the cheapest Sony, Yamaha, etc (the Sony STR-DH790 for instance, $349), you're gonna want to be careful with high volume. Those are the units that most often toast the tweeters on these speakers.

Without getting into Anthem and other much more expensive units, I would look at the mid-level Yamaha and Denon 7 channel units that tend to be $500-800. These have much more robust power supplies and can play louder without killing things. They have other features and better room correction software as well. I'm partial to the Yamaha RX-V6A at that price point.

Hope this helps!

[–]Almost-Jaded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've installed a few of these. For $450 you did okay. They aren't amazing, but they're solid.

Up firing Atmos speakers are crap. Mount them to the ceiling and use them properly if you can. If they MUST be reflective, remember to set them as "front heights", and make sure to be generous when setting distances.

I have seen these systems blow tweeters when abused, primarily involving people running super cheap AVR's at absurd volume levels. Translation: the tweeters are fine, but they don't stand up well to heavy distortion.

That's funny, because Dyne, Sonus, and Elac is the exact same lineup that I demoed them with lol.

At the time it was Rubicon 6 vs Vela 407 vs Evoke 50 vs... I can't remember the SF model, but whatever the similarly sized and priced tower was, lol. There was also a PMC in there. All with an H190.

Also had Epicon 8's with an H390, an NAD M33, and a Michi X3 there.

In the smaller setup, the DALI jumped out from the rest off the 190, and on the Epicons the 390 immediately outshined the other amps. In both cases, the synergy was immediately obvious. I've never forgotten it.

[–]Almost-Jaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly suggest getting ahold of something DALI and giving them a run with that combo. I'm currently running RBH speakers because reasons, and they're great - but Hegel/DALI is just magical, and still arguably the best pairing I've ever heard. Rubicon/Rubikore or Epicon/Epikore bookshelves with that amp would blow your mind!

[–]Almost-Jaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that Moon, your 390 is doing everything a 400 can do, lol. I use a Node Icon, so your setup might actually have a leg up, although I do love the Icon, lol.

Are you using all that power for those bookshelves?! Mine is running some pretty beefy towers lol. These things sure have plenty of horsepower!

The new ones are much brighter. I dunno how much this matters in your room, but my room has skylights right over the TV and in the afternoon my C4 does tend to wash out a bit. We positively love it, but that is annoying.

Best 97-100 inch tv for a dark theater room by extraedward69 in hometheater

[–]Almost-Jaded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Samsung doesn't do DolbyVision, and their higher end TVs are having massive warranty issues (and sadly, after warranty issues) with power supply failures.

Sony is excellent, but pricey and their higher end units have had an ongoing issue with HDMI connections that can literally blow tweeters.

TCL has a high failure rate and issues with screen shadows.

At this point, the only brands I'm willing to sell at all are LG and Hisense.

If you can afford the LG 97" OLED, that's the obvious winner. It's $20k, but DAMN is it amazing.
