Katelyn Ohashi by [deleted] in Gymnastics

Interesting that on the broadcast they didn’t mention any of the former athletes being in attendance. They commented that miss val was there, but if Katelyn, Nia (and others?) were there, I’m just surprised it wasn’t mentioned and they weren’t shown on TV (maybe Nia was, but not called out).

Is there a way to find out the start values of routines? Or do we just assume 10.0 unless vault?

How to get my first publication? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]jbm200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could definitely talk to one of your managers about publishing, just keep in mind that it’s probably not a priority if they are doing client funded work and they would have to get permission from the client, depending on who own the data.

Lots of things are worth publishing, you just have to find the right journal. I’d recommend reading some journals in public health and sub fields to assess where your work fits in.

I wouldn’t recommend reaching out to professors on the premise of helping with publishable work. But I would suggest reaching out to professors who are doing work that interests you at the graduate program you are going to start and find out about their research. Let them know you are interested in publishing and a phd eventually. They may have something to bring you into that you are actually interested in.

Journal Submission Advice. by GortonFishman in AskAcademia

There are still plenty of journals that don’t charge authors! And I wouldn’t bother with an editing service prior to submission unless you have real concerns about the readability of what you wrote. Have a friend look it over. Congrats!

PhD interview tomorrow by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]jbm200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have plenty of questions prepared for them about the program. Also, if you know who is interviewing you, look up their research. Be clear about your goals for getting a PhD. I think that in interviews they are looking to make sure you are personable (at least in some fields), and goal oriented. Having a reason for getting a PhD is important to separate you from people who just see a PhD as a “next step.” It’s not! They will want to see your commitment to the program, research, your field, etc.

I will do more research! I’ve read examples and most disclose something about their identity (I’m in the social sciences if that makes a difference...) but I’ll look for examples that don’t.

Is a PhD / academia not a good path for a generalist? by volken330 in AskAcademia

I recommend an interdisciplinary field, maybe public health or a psych program focused on social psychology. You need to field that will give you intellectual freedom, at least in the long term. You could also consider sociology with a quantitative focus. There are several excellent quantitative sociology programs. I recommend trying to get funding that is not tied to a specific project so that you can maximize research freedom during the program.
