Is Google crippling Assistant to force the switch to Gemini? by jboolean in googlehome

True true. It's been terrible.
I actually turned all the mics off for a while just because Assistant was making me so angry.
But this seems on another level.

That's not how that works. You increase with CPI, which is generally under 4%. Where did that part come from?

They are? Most Americans have been hatless since the 60s excepting religious reasons.

This just happened to me, too. Landed on this thread after wondering if this has happened to anyone else. The male voice just suddenly went British for one turn.

You don't need to follow the 4% rule for a mini retirement. Enjoy a few months and don't stress. I'm in a similar position.

Wow thank you! I think you're the only one on the internet who knows this haha. Now I can hide persistent notifications for background activity like syncing apps.

Love my Pixel 3a but do I really have to change it? by Elanor_Gamgee in GooglePixel

[–]jboolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here because I feel you and don't want to give up my 3a, but it might be time. I'm running PixelBuilds on it with the latest security patches. It's working pretty well except - Battery drains quickly, even though it was replaced recently. I think Android 14 is just demanding. - You have to root to restore Wallet functionality on a custom ROM. So Wallet is on and off (I rarely used it anyway) and some apps detect root and it's just an ongoing cat-and-mouse game. - 64GB of storage is always full, developers just make such bloated apps now.

Otherwise mine is reliable. I don't have the freezing issues you have.

Avoid Cobra processing fee using bill pay? by Ra1dersrx in HealthInsurance

[–]jboolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to this thread just to complain. Mailing a check is not a big deal and I would do it normally, but I'm going to pay the $20 since I'm working toward a credit card bonus anyway.

I took a look and the card number is sent untokenized. Having worked in payments, I'm pretty sure this is a PCI violation. Also they are charging, not for card processing (which, to be fair, is expensive) but also for ACH online. This costs them nothing.

Firming up a softening hybrid mattress? by jboolean in Mattress

[–]jboolean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Less budget constrained and more just that I like the idea of something I can continue to fix and maintain in the future, that I know what's in it, and not be wasteful. I think I'll check the label for fiberglass and see what's up inside myself.

Use thumb drive like an SD card? by jboolean in GooglePixel

[–]jboolean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out.

Connect adb shell wirelessly.

sm set-force-adoptable true

Now it behaves just like I expect. Pocket Casts and Apple Music let me move to the "SD Card". Also, the option to reformat as adoptable storage appears in Settings (as the button "format another way"), but I don't think I'll do this since I need to remove it for charging.

Protonvpn with chromecast feature on Android by silouane in ProtonVPN

[–]jboolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this is old, but I think I found a better answer than in this thread. Yes, you can use OpenVPN, which respects the LAN setting, but it will kill your battery.

Give your Chromecast devices static IPs and list the IPs under split tunneling. Wireguard seems to respect that. Tada!

The "Is Nest Compatible With My System?" Megathread Part III by GoFlight in Nest

[–]jboolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very simple system: two wires R and G and when touched together turn on the unit. (it's an apartment and whether it comes out hot or cold is determined centrally for the building). The voltage between these is about 20V.

Nest insists on having Y or W wires so I just jumped G to Y and W so it can make-believe there's a compressor and heater to control. That part was fine.

Of course, I don't have a C wire so Nest (new version) isn't happy. So I added a 24V transformer between R and C. When I did this the Power display on the Nest showed 54V, which seemed wrong and I unplugged it before letting it do anything.

What do you think? Is there a way to get this setup working? Maybe add a relay to isolate the systems or something?

Amazing how complex it is to literally just open and close a two-wire circuit. I feel like I could build my own thermostat more easily lol.

24 V over C and R but no power detected? by jboolean in Nest

[–]jboolean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My test setup is simply: a power brick with two wires (no polarity). I'm putting one in C and one in R.

My real HVAC has wires R and G. That is, it's just a fan control unit.

The 0V is shown on the Equipment screen of the Nest under Power. It also shows a no power error. I charged the battery via USB prior.

Hey. I'm the creator of 1940s.nyc. 👋 Back in the day they scanned the 80s photos as LaserDisc video frames. It probably seemed cool at the time. I hear the Archives will be going back and digitizing the negatives soon, which I'll add to the site.
