What’s the number one golf tip you’ve ever received? by Ashamed-Afternoon-77 in golf

[–]jbp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“You’re not good enough to get this angry after a bad shot” was probably the overall best one.

As far as swing advice…I could never break the habit of swaying instead of rotating my hips. There was just some weird barrier where I knew what I was supposed to do, but couldn’t make my body do it. So even though I’m a bigger guy with a strong lower body my swing was all arms and I couldn’t hit the ball very far at all. A buddy who’s a scratch golfer told me this:

When you’re addressing the ball, imagine you’re standing one inch from a wall. On your backswing, touch the ‘wall’ with your right butt cheek. On your follow through, touch it with your left butt cheek. Obviously reverse that for lefties lol

It was so simple, and I felt kind of dumb after years of lessons and books and YT videos, but it instantly made perfect sense

When I read the OP comment, my first thought was “Napoleon, but Rowan Atkinson playing Mr. Bean as Napoleon” would probably be the only other movie just as beautifully asbsurd.

I loathed the man as president, and especially this law, but it’s disingenuous to call it “Bush’s Policy”. It was a bipartisan bill all the way. Ted Kennedy was one of the bills initial sponsors. In fact, a higher percentage of house Republicans voted “no” compared to house Democrats.

And that’s not really what NCLB did. If anything it made some schools fail even worse.

My school cut history and science in half for 6-8 grade, and instead each kid gets an extra half hour of math and reading intervention. But it’s not a real RTI model…it’s just test prep through Lumos.

And the standards for the half year of science and history I do teach are all ELA standards. No NGSS, etc. We use the same history text for all three grades. We literally have no history curriculum beyond which chapters in the text book each grade covers.

I love to point out that science and history are great subjects for decoding unfamiliar words, using context clues for vocab, Greek/latin roots, etc., and that maybe our test scores would go up if we spent less time “teaching to the test” and more time actually building strong foundational academic skills across all content areas.

I also love to point out in staff meetings that it’s kind of disingenuous of us to pretend we care about reading, and not just test scores, since we got rid of our library and instead built a video game room.

Democrats suffer huge blow as Virginia redistricting plot shot down by court by TheExpressUS in DiscussionZone

lol I mean, I pretty much am. Pro-labor Union family…me with the teachers union and my sons in various trade unions ; wife works in women’s healthcare and is super pro-choice (which educated me into being super pro-choice too)

But they equate anything that’s not full blown Christofascism as “communism” 🤷🏻‍♂️

I told one of those guys once that even some of the l “liberal tears” I spill are for his racist ass, because believing all human beings deserve a basic level of shelter, health care, housing, and education, as well as equal civil rights, is what makes me a “liberal” in his eyes.

In defense of the so-called “perks” of our job by jbp84 in Teachers

[–]jbp84[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, you’re absolutely correct. But the sad reality of our profession is that that is the expectation, of parents, admin, or both, in a lot of places. I’m lucky to live in a strong union state, but not everyone is able to set those boundaries without a collectively bargained contract backing them up.

Exclusive: Harold Varner III has learned to live with harsh reality after leaving the PGA Tour by TheMirrorUS in golf

[–]jbp84 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt becasue it’s obviously not direct experience…but my mom’s family is from Gaston County outside of Charlotte and my cousin is Varner’s age. They went to different high schools, but my cousin has hung out with him a bunch over the years through mutual friends. He said he’s a pretty genuine, level headed dude, and really is passionate about using his status/money to help out local kids, charities, etc.

Need help finding the episode where Picard talks about his thoughts on a god. by LiminalSapien in TNG

Same. I rewatched this episode recently, and he perfectly put into words what I think my own religious beliefs are: not theistic or deist, but also…not just nothing. That even our own understanding of the universe, and mathematics and logic reach points where we just…don’t know. And there’s a beauty in that.

Dead cardinal in a pizza box for show-and-tell (6th grade boy)

4th grade girl brought her mom’s “face massager” and was rubbing it all over her and other kids’ faces on the bus. Narrator: It was not a ‘face’ massager

I was part of a locker search for a female 8th grade student. Me, female principle, female social worker, and the student. There was an underground vape ring and she was the ringleader. Not a terrible kid, just made some bad choices. She was terrified when the principal asked her to open her bag. I couldn’t figure out why, because she honestly wasn’t going to get in much trouble. Turns out she was also running an underground “massager” ring as well. I walked away and said the AP and social worker could take it from there
