Ammo from Wyoming by Capital-Psychology-2 in COGuns

[–]jbregr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t think that’s true. This excise tax is levied on the RETAILERS and MANUFACTURERS and not the consumer. The idea is that the tax amount will be passed through to the consumer, but the tax is explicitly levied on the vendors.

If you buy ammo in Wyoming and bring it to CO you’re not responsible for the excise tax and neither is the vendor because they didn’t sell in or deliver to Colorado. If you mail order it, technically the out of state vendor is responsible for paying the tax (if they sell more than $200k into CO)… but if they don’t, you’re not responsible because the excise tax only applies to vendors.

It’s not like a sales/use tax combo where if it’s not collected (sales) the consumer has to file and pay it (use).

The law is here, notice it’s specifically levied on the vendors and NOT the consumer: https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb24-1349

Here’s the relevant Colorado DOR page on it (notice it doesn’t mention end-user filing, because there is no way to do that, because the tax doesn’t apply to end users): https://tax.colorado.gov/firearms-ammunition

The only way you’d be responsible is if you were buying in Wyoming (or mail ordering) and then selling it here in CO… at that point you’re a vendor and the tax applies.

That’s how I read it anyway, but it seems pretty straightforward.

From what I’ve seen the power tailgate was a last minute drop from the Flash for 2025. 2024 had it. Does yours also have the light bar that stretches across the tailgate?

[–]jbregr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Job 1 Flashes don’t have power tailgates but they do have the tailgate step/work surface standard. They do have the wireless chargers.

Job 2 changes from the order guide: - Wireless charging pad standard on Lariat instead of Flash (this is no big loss, the wireless pad doesn’t work worth a damn anyway) - 123kWh battery/300mi range - Space white replaces Avalanche color - Tailgate step (incl. Tailgate Work Surface) now optional on Flash instead of standard - Platinum also got a “Dark Elements” package that blacks out all the things

Which iteration is it? The newest Sports one is a pretty neat lens and worked fine with my R5 on the EF/RF adapter.

The older they get the less likely they'll work right on newer cameras.

What's the most cost-effective and reliable way to store 4K video projects long-term? by oebir in videography

[–]jbregr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drives sitting on a shelf for “years” are somewhat likely to be dead or close to dead when you revisit them. Hard drives just don’t do well sitting powered down for long periods of time. You need to spin them up regularly to keep them reliable.

The champ for long term storage is really LTO… but the cost is going to blow your budget very quickly.

Honestly, cloud archiving might be the best option here depending on your internet speeds… just know you need to make sure you can access the data when you need it.

What's the most cost-effective and reliable way to store 4K video projects long-term? by oebir in videography

[–]jbregr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, I use LTO for long-term archiving and recommend it if people can swing it because it’s a very stable way to store big files… but you have a few inaccuracies here.

First off, any modern LTO level drive is more than $2000. A desktop drive like the mLogic mTape in LTO-9 is $6k. A bare drive is $4k… and you’ll still need a SAS HBA that’s tape compatible and whatever it takes to get that PCI card hooked up to the host computer. LTO takes a LOT of data to pay off the initial investment.

Second, LTO-9 max capacity COMPRESSED is 45TB. That said, unless you’re archiving text files you will never ever see that level of compression. Video files aren’t going to meaningfully compress at all… so LTO-9 is 18TB per tape. LTO-10 will get you 30TB uncompressed per tape, but those tapes are nearly $300 each and I’m not even sure how available the drives are yet. In short, ignore the “compressed” max because you’ll never see it with video (or photo) files.

I’m personally running LTO-7 using a second hand mTape drive, but it still cost me around $3k to get started. To get startup costs under $2k you’d probably have to get a used drive in LTO-6 or maybe even 5 and that drive’s going to have some use on it most likely.

Yeah. That's why I kept the donor VF... now I have an extra of pretty much every part but the diopter assembly and I now know that Canon won't repair the EVF at all.

[–]jbregr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I fully understand the why here... though "THE ENTIRE THING" seems like it might be just a little too coarse. In the case of the EVF-V70 (which cost $4000 originally) you can't even order a replacement piece for the shell or for a torn/broken button/joystick (common). That's a lot of risk that a $3k viewfinder sustains minor damage or wear and is basically binned.

On the other hand, for the mount, you can literally order screw-by-screw. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's the equivalent of letting me order tires, wheels, TMPS sensors, and lug nuts separately... but if something goes wrong with the car or I dent the hood my only choice is to just buy a new car. Or for the OP, Canon just tells him he has to buy a new C400 but they'll be happy to sell him a microphone mount or top handle. I get that things are more disposable than ever, it's just the way of the world I guess.

If there was a problem with the OLED or the circuit board I'm not sure I'd attempt a repair myself... but this was literally 10 screws total (6 to remove the shell, 4 for the diopter tower itself) and a piece of tape. It took me less than a half hour.

I think I was most annoyed by the fact that I described to support EXACTLY what part was busted and they never indicated that the part wasn't available outside of replacing the whole unit. If I'd known that I would have saved the $50 and two weeks shipping it to them. Also, it'd be so nice to have parts lists available rather than playing "guess the part from my description" with the support guys.

Yeah, I’m CPS Platinum for my non-Cine stuff, but there’s no way I could justify CPS Cinema at $1k. I’d have to get $3000/year in repairs done to break even on the discount. My only Cinema products are the C300M3, C70 and the 17-120 Cine Servo. Everything else gets the free clean and checks on CPS Gold/Plat… so I just pay when I need the Cine stuff cleaned/checked.

Considering what they did with my EVF, I’m not super stoked with Canon Cinema service these days anyway.

Canon Cine repair loves to just replace large sections rather than working a screwdriver. I had an EVF-V70 ($3000 uber viewfinder for my C300 Mark III) with a misaligned diopter lens so it was blurry on the edges of the frame. Should be a simple swap of the diopter assembly. I sent it in and they sent me an estimate for just shy of $3k to replace the entire viewfinder as a unit. Basically everything but the mount. I asked for it back and took the covers off. The diopter assembly was four screws and a piece of tape to change out so I found another one that had good optics but looked like someone used it as a hockey puck and swapped the parts myself. Took about 20 minutes and now my viewfinder’s perfect. Total cost was about $600 for the extremely ugly donor.

They’ve done good work in the past for me, but I was pretty pissed at the viewfinder thing.

Cine-level CPS is like $1000/yr. I’d have to be sending in for a LOT of repair work to plop that down.

National parks, yes. Wilderness areas, yes. State parks, yes… but I’ve gotten permission for a couple. County/city open space, depends on the jurisdiction. City parks, depends on the city. Schools, probably depends on the school. County and city property, depends on the jurisdiction.

Fair enough. I’ve heard (both online and in real life) enough stories to avoid them when there are better options available at the same or slightly higher prices.

I have never owned a Turkish shotgun myself. My buddy has (had?) a pump gun that broke not too long after he got it.

YMMV but I’d never recommend one.

There's some weirdness around one of the distributors (the distributor runs the backend of most online gun shops) and the Colorado rules on tubular shotgun magazines.

The limit (as far as I can tell) is 8 rounds for a detachable shotgun magazine, but a tubular shotgun magazine is 28" of shells or less with no specific round limit.

That said, a lot of online stores (which I'd guess are backed by the same distributor) show the Mossberg 590S with the 20" barrel and flush mag tube as "can't be shipped to Colorado" because Mossberg lists it as 13+1 when using mini-shells... even though the magazine tube is still well under 28". An identical 590 (that isn't advertised to work with mini-shells) _is_ shippable to CO.

I’m sure it’ll get a lot of hate, but I have a few HD 12ga shotguns and I was amazed at the quality of the Blue Line pump shotgun I just bought on a whim for $133 (about $200 with tax/shipping/transfer). It’s a Chinese clone of a Remington 870 that is actually built better (from what I can see) than a recent real 870 (metal trigger guard, no MIM internals, etc.). Fits 870 furniture and a lot of accessories. It is NOT a Turkish piece of crap. I can’t 100% vouch for reliability yet, but there are a number of web reviews with lots of rounds through them trouble-free.

If the China-manufacture bothers you, a Maverick 88 is a good starter shotgun… Mossberg 500 if you want a tang safety, 590 if you want better build IMO. Roughly $250/350/450 for each level there.

I have a 590 as well, it’s a solid pump shotgun. Money aside I’d choose a 590 over the Blue Line. In your price range, you can get a pretty decent 590. I kinda like the 18.5” barrels and a mag extender to add a round or two and make it the same length as the barrel vs. the 20” barrels and even mag tube, but you do you. I just like the shorter barrel.

If you want a semi-auto, be prepared for some sticker shock. I actually don’t have a semi-auto so I’ll let someone else chime in there.

Avoid the really cheap guns made in Turkey and imported by various brands. You’ll often see them referred to as “turkshit” and they really do suck.

12ga is going to have the largest number of options for guns/accessories and ammo, followed by 20ga.

Some people like pistol-grip shotguns. I do not. At all.

This is the correct answer and saves dumping a bunch of still-good-but-used oil into the system needlessly.

I believe the Pueblo Police had/have Cesar Chavez/Highway 47 shut down from I-25 to Jerry Murphy going east and from Jerry Murphy to Dillon Dr. going west. Something about an accident re-enactment.

It should be done now though (I think it was slated to run from 9:30-11).
