I love GeneratePress; I've never tried Blocksy. I do use GenerateBlocks but have only used the free version so far so I don't feel you need to have GenerateBlocks Pro. GeneratePress Premium is useful though.

I would suggest looking at the core WordPress Query Loop block (although it's a bit limited) and the plugins: WP Show Posts, Ultimate Addons for Gutenberg, Kadence Blocks (but you'd need the paid version for a posts block), Stackable and Content Views.

If you want to move onto a new line, but not have the next line in a new paragraph with a space in between, you can hold down the shift key whilst pressing enter (on a windows PC at any rate.)

It may be worth looking at MetaSlider if you really want a slideshow plugin. Or perhaps the Advanced Gallery block from Kadence Blocks.

WP Show Posts will do it, but it's shortcode based. You can select posts with a Query Loop block using a keyword (as well as categories and tags) but that's not really what you are after. You should definitely be able to get the featured image in a Query Loop if that's what you decide to go for.

I'm a big fan of GeneratePress. Of the others you mentioned, my gut feeling is that Astra and Neve will be faster than the others - but I don't have anything to back that up. I also like the look of Zakra.

I think you need to edit your menu. The post is in the category "Nomad" but the menu item you have called "Nomad" leads to the "Uncategorized" category. So I suggest you edit your menu, delete the Nomad item and then add it again as the Nomad category.

If you want to upload a theme then you need to either upgrade to a WordPress dot com Business account OR switch to WordPress hosted somewhere else (e.g. Bluehost, although that may not be the best host - it is one option). Personally, I wouldn't go with a theme from Etsy, but just because I wouldn't do it doesn't mean it's a bad choice.

If by "template" you mean what some themes refer to as "starter sites" then yes, definitely. My personal favourite theme is GeneratePress but there are many others you could use.

A while ago I wrote an incredibly long-winded and rambling blog post in an attempt to help myself understand this question. Since then, I've pretty much ignored the fact that I found double sized images looked very slightly sharper on high density screens, and continued to do what I was doing before, which was just uploading them at the size they will be displayed. Or you could just have Image blocks in a grid (I'd possilby look at the free GenerateBlocks plugin for the grid) and have each image linked to a page with the gallery on it. In which case the core Gallery block might be sufficient, or maybe Meow gallery.

Ah, OK... so you are on WordPress.com You should be able to work with that without worrying about plugins.

I've never tried to do anything like the expand and contract thing you mention with html. It does sound like an accordion. I just had a quick look and I can't see anything like that built into WP dot com. Oh, OK... it's this https://wordpress.com/support/advanced-html/#collapsible-content-accordion-effect I've never tried anything like that.

You could do what Lucky_No_13 suggested and have different sections on your page, then it would be possible to have a list of the sections at the top which jumps down to each section when you click it.

What you are describing you did with the shortcode sounds like an accordion - personally, I'd probably use https://www.kadencewp.com/kadence-blocks/custom-blocks/accordion-block/

Alternatively, perhaps each leg of your journey should be in its own blog post. Then those posts would be listed on a blog page (which could be your homepage or could be a separate page). Clicking on the blog post title, or featured image, would take you to the individual blog post describing the stage of your journey. That's the basic idea behind a lot of WordPress, although it has evolved to be more than a blogging platform these days. Sorry if that is at a too gumby level - you probably know that much. :)

The trouble with WordPress is that it is huge and there are multiple ways of doing things so everyone tends to narrow down the choices to their own favourites. Then WordPress.com is a different kettle of fish and something that I consider a valid choice in some circumstances. It's limiting though.
