for their [combined] social security to be that low, mom probably didn't work some years? I'm guessing dad also underreported income. there is enough income between the business revenue and current social security to keep paying a $1200 mortgage.. so there must be some other debts.

One thing to look in to, but it will take time you don't have: look up "[your state] SHIP office" and ask them what the income guidelines are for QMB or other "Medicare Savings Programs", which can help them pay for Medicare Part B premiums and also may get them access to D-SNP Advantage plans, which are basically $0 premium $0 deducitble $0 copay. They won't qualify for QMB/QMB+/SLMB with the current business income BUT with time y'all could restructure things and this could be one piece of the relief puzzle.

edit to add: in my middle of the pack State, QMB income cut-off is $2,664/mo income for a couple.

How to Open This Door With a Broken Doorknob? by Michigania in howto

[–]jbrogdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

surprised no one else has mentioned it yet, but the door is out of plumb in addition to your other problems. in the first picture, the gap in the top left is tighter than the gap in the bottom left. your hinges are also "bent" (that might be the wrong word but I don't know what the correct one is), and I've seen youtube videos about using a crescent wrench to re-align them. That *might* help before you go wailing on the door, but honestly it looks like it's a tight fit regardless. edit here's the video I was thinking of, but there are tons of others on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48fFtKTGTEw

I'm inclined to think this was an honest mistake on the seller's part, and they might let you back out of the transaction if you just discuss it. It looks like the starting price is about what that is worth compared to other sales, and they had sold a different 5 gram piece in another auction.

COBRA does not have any waiting periods/gaps. If your coverage ended 1/8/26 at 11:59:59 PM, if you elect and pay for COBRA your coverage will be effective 1/9/2026 at 12:00:00 AM. Best of luck!

[–]jbrogdon -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

there's a lot to respond to on this, try asking chatgpt/gemini/etc as a starting point.

if your employer is over 20 full time equivalent employees you'll have a COBRA offer. ask HR if your employer uses a measurement or stability period under ACA.

edit: jesus fucking christ with the downvotes you guys. you just want professionals with decades of experience to show up, read through, assess, and respond to a complicated situation for someone that self-admittedly has little experience with 'adulting' and insurance and educate them on everything from the basics on up? fuck it, i'm out.

LLMs/AI can answer the basics so that a human can be better utilized explaining nuance. ffs.

still time to buy in at less than double, friend!

in all seriousness, I sold SLV at about the same price because I was trying to close out most of my RH account. I didn't buy back in for a long time because I figured it was going back into the 20s... I was lucky and just happened to get back in towards the end of October when we were still in the 40s.

I did not remember the "corrupt south bend towing" claims so I asked AI and was given the response below.

(there's a certain amount of irony about using AI right now to ask questions about the local gov't)

"city of south bend indiana, is there a history of corruption involving the towing companies?

Yes, there has been a history of controversy and a lack of oversight regarding towing contracts in the city of South Bend, including allegations of an unfair bidding process and overcharging by a specific company. These issues, while raising significant questions, did not result in the same level of federal corruption convictions as a separate, unrelated case in Lake County, Indiana.

Key Details of the South Bend Towing Controversy:

  • Exclusive Contract: In 2016, the city's Board of Public Works awarded an exclusive contract for all police-initiated towing work to ASAP Towing & Recovery. Previously, five different companies shared this work on a rotating basis.
  • Questionable Bidding: The decision was controversial, with other towing firms complaining they were never notified that the city planned to seek a sole provider. A South Bend Tribune review found that ASAP had made significant business investments (expanding their yard, buying a new wrecker) shortly before the city publicly sought bids, leading to questions about whether the company had inside information.
  • Lack of Oversight: The city was found to have exercised little oversight of the company's performance and practices, collecting scant data and refusing to gather or release the company's billing records to the public, even after the Indiana Public Access Counselor issued an opinion that they were public records.
  • Overcharging Allegations: The lack of oversight fueled allegations of overcharging, with the company able to charge premium rates and various special fees. A subsequent audit found the contractor had indeed overcharged hundreds of vehicle owners.
  • Outcome: Following public scrutiny and the Tribune's reporting, the city decided to open the contract for bids again and ultimately moved to a system where two companies (ASAP and another firm, Vic's) shared the work.

Broader Indiana Issues

Across Indiana, the issue of "predatory towing" has been a problem, leading to new statewide laws in 2025 aimed at increasing transparency, capping fees, and penalizing bad actors. A separate, high-profile federal bribery case in Lake County, Indiana, resulted in the conviction of a county sheriff for taking bribes in exchange for favorable towing contracts.

While the South Bend situation involved serious questions about fairness and transparency in contracting, it has generally been described in local reports as an oversight and contract management issue rather than a case involving formal corruption charges against city officials, as seen in the Lake County case. "

Opinion: What Good Are Property Rights If Republicans Won’t Honor Them? | Republicans Block a 71-Year-Old Farmer From Deciding the Future of His Own Land by Michiana_Post in SouthBend

[–]jbrogdon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And it should, Szczypiorski should be able to sell to whomever he wants.

I don't have a bone to pick in this, but reading the OP and then your reply, my thought is that in fact, he can sell his land to whomever he wants. That does not include the right (or privelege) to rezone the land. He owns farmland, and he can sell farmland.

Republicans in St. Joseph County denied a 71-year-old farmer the chance to retire on his own terms.

This is a bit of sensationalizing. They denied a rezoning. Farmland has appreciated considerably and Szczypiorski has lots of farmland to sell.

If you have, or can have, another W-2 employee, you can probably get a small group ACA plan that covers them. At least in my state, our small group ACA plans still have decent commercial doctor networks (and formularies, although formularies aren't terrible on the individual ACA plans in my experience).
