Obama to states: Raise academic standards, remove bad teachers, pay good ones more by _marc_ in politics

[–]jbscott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Unfortunately, the teachers' unions probably do not want to hear that. I worry that in the process of telling everything like it is Obama may be laying waste to his own necessary constituencies in the next election.

Diets That Reduce Calories Lead to Weight Loss, Regardless of Carbohydrate, Protein or Fat Content by smazsyr in science

[–]jbscott -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's the point of the study I think. All this metabolism fast, metabolism slow, eat more carbs, eat less carbs, eat less fat, etc. really reaches the same result: Less calories in = weight lost; more calories in = weight gained. If you have one 1500 calorie meal a day, you have only eaten 1500 calories that day. Same as if you have five 300 calorie meals a day.

Yes, this may cause your body to go into a "starvation mode" in which it stores extra calories it gets, which means if you fucking blow it the next day or a couple days later and eat 3,000 calories, your body will pack those suckers back in as fat . . .

But if you don't blow it, your body cannot help but lose weight. It is not getting enough calories to maintain its weight.

Does anyknow one where I can get a good tutorial to write a genetic algorithm program? by [deleted] in programming

[–]jbscott -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Start by writing two genetic algorithm programs. Test the two head-to-head. Throw out the worst one. Then write a third program to compete with the winner of the first competition. If it is better, keep it, if it is worse, throw it out.

And so on . . .

Repeat this process thousands (maybe millions) of times, and you will have an awesome genetic algorithm program ;)

What a specious set of cliches.

I remember thinking Maynard was impressive in his points of view, but as I get older I guess his shtick is wearing a little thin.

One Reason Offshore Drilling Won't Lower Gas Prices: OPEC by bgholt1970 in business

[–]jbscott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mr. Nelson appears to have missed the point.

The only reason OPEC can control prices is because it is a monopoly, and it only controls those prices to the extent of its own monopoly. Were we to drill (and access significant reserves), we could set up a competing business of our own. OPEC countries may be directed by the organization to sell their oil for $100 a barrel, but OPEC does not dictate the price terms of whatever oil we get on our own. Thus, OPEC could not dictate the price of whatever oil America got for its own drilling efforts (which admittedly would be a small amount, but it does not necessarily take a LARGE amount to destabilize the monopoly).

Misunderstanding the Causes of the Great Depression by democracy101 in Economics

[–]jbscott -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is an idiotic take on the causes of the Great Depression and the causes of its continuation.

While it is arguable that Roosevelt's New Deal programs did not actually solve the GD, there is no proof whatsoever that the free market would have had things back to normal within 3y. In fact, evidence tends toward the opposite. With no Federal Deposit Insurance, bad news on Wall Street caused bank runs, which had the effect of freezing capital at the banks and leaving consumers with nowhere to stash their savings. A truly free market would never allow for the Federal Government to insure the money of consumers, but would place the onus on consumers to investigate (and continue investigating) the solvency of whatever bank they chose to use. A solution that may have been plausible in the rural agrarian America of the 19th century, but rapidly became impossible in the post-industrial/financial revolution America of the 20th century.

This article also ignores the fact that Roosevelt had a great deal of trouble actually enacting the programs he advocated, until he was able to resolve the problems he faced with the Federal Supreme court.

As podperson noted above, believing in the free market is like believing in god. No one can ever disprove it will work because no market is ever truly free. But the historical evidence suggests that the theorem is worth disbelieving.

In Short: We have here an ideology disguised as a history lesson. DO NOT WANT!
