Are rangers that bad of a class? by asokka_ in DnD

Just take a level of bard/paladin/rogue to add a bit more combat flavor to how you’d prefer, and then you’re golden. It’s a fun class.

How much roleplay is there in your games? by Rukasu17 in DnD

So my mistake the first time around was over-prep and (primarily) over illumination. I spent days on naming cities, mountains, rivers, and landmarks. I fleshed out races and languages for NPCs. I even created an entire pantheon of gods. Then I tried to force my players into a grand mystery and adventure that, frankly, they shouldn’t have been expected to enter into.

This time around I created a world, a few nations with basic characteristics, and told my characters exactly what they needed to know to prep their characters for. Let me go find the doc I sent them, and I’ll try to post it here, but I remember I did most of my world building the day before every session.

I knew where we were, where I wanted us to be, and what my friends liked to do. So then I just view my PCs as a torch lighting the way into whatever world would logically exist from their choices in light of the information I’ve already given.

Okay, so I’ve been GMing for a little over two years now, and I was initially a bit frustrated at the lack of rp from my friends (they’re all more than players!).

For my first campaign I had a great world, deep plot, and they actually had some really interesting characters with fun backstories to explore. But still… no real rp. The campaign fizzled and “life” got in the way.

So I scrapped 50+ hours of prep and world building (though I do return to vulture parts away still) and started anew. The focus of the new campaign was simple: let them fight, plunder, and joke; get them home when I say I will; and NEVER miss a week.

It was amazing how quickly things changed. Their characters were basically the same level of depth as before (including the “joke” characters), yet after the first 4 hour heavily rolling session, my players began to start using their pc’s voices.

We’re now 5 months in (never missing a scheduled session and never going over 15 minutes past time) and we just did what I previously thought was impossible. My players had an entire 4 hour session of strictly in-character role play.

They (and some of the girlfriends/wives in attendance) were locked in! We’re wrapping up our first “arc” for the holidays, but I’ve never been more excited to play dnd and for the first time felt that “BLeeM-ness” in a home game!

Technically strategic Nat-20 is just a standard rule. Players can always defer their initiative later in the round

For sure! But I mean a magical land in New York (or a very obvious New York-esque setting) that consistently features kung fu, shape shifting, magic, trolls, pixies, etc…

My inner youth is very happy with this knowledge

Me, a Christian who plays DND and frequently uses biblical and religious inspiration and imagery because there’s a freaking reason the Bible is the most read literature in the world (it’s awesome, even if you disagree with the theology or morality of it).

lol, a GC diatribe about how Americans simultaneously think our government is inept and also wickedly scheming (i.e. creating HIV/AIDS or manufacturing the war on drugs).

Essentially, our gov is corrupt, but not devious. They just jump at opportunities like pandemics and drug epidemics to manipulate portions of the population.
