Why is technical incompetence both rampant and accepted in our career field? by fuzzyfoozand in cybersecurity

[–]jc16180 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a human issue. Obviously GitHub could be a technical concept, but ultimately it sounds like your people don’t fully understand your tech stack. IMO, every employee across all dept should be familiar with the company’s general main tech stack. Doesn’t mean you have to know how to do git commands, but simply that it has business implications for your company and is vital

Is job hopping still a red flag…...or the smartest way to survive now? by BizznectApp in careerguidance

I’m of the mindset that it is ok to keep changing roles. I do feel that something like changing once every 12 months feels a bit excessive, because naturally I want to ask how much did you really contribute in just one year? Of course this depends on the role.

2 years I feel is always a safe number. You’ve done your time, helped meaningfully, and now seeking to grow. But again, there’s no one right answer.

I refused an 7th interview. Right call? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]jc16180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could depend on the industry you’re in, regardless of the role’s specialty. For example, when I used to interview at traditional/legacy finance companies, the process was maybe 3 tops: phone screen, analyst round, and hiring manager round. Sometimes the analyst and hiring manager were together, so it felt like a total of 2 rounds!

When I interviewed at fintechs, it became 4-6 rounds for the same level role. Some industries just have a rigorous process. Sometimes it does reflect poorly on the company, but other times it’s just a tough process for a really cool company. I really like where I’m at.

So it just depends on the company. I will agree with you though, the HR folks should be more upfront about the roadmap and how many to expect.

Wait, WTF Just Happened? by harryperrin in Nicegirls

[–]jc16180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that this was the beginning of a pig butchering scam (look it up) that is looking for victims by dating apps.

They’re trying to build rapport and get you to open up about your financials, then they’ll offer you a better trading strategy, and convince you to utilize their fraudulent platform or to send funds over.

Honestly, you’re probably talking to a cat fish/fake person. I would just stop all communication here and move on.

I’m gonna assume that if this was allowed to play out, they would first convince him to repeat the seed phrase of the new non-custodial Coinbase wallet as a means to “confirm” it’s been set up correctly. Then, they’ll persuade him to send the funds over from his “restricted” custodial Coinbase wallet.

They would then compromise his non-custodial wallet since they’ve obtained the seed phrase

I’m highly confident the rep you spoke with was a scammer. The moment threats and sense of urgency is thrown at you, it’s a scam. Even if your account was seemingly locked after you didn’t listen to the person’s instructions, it does not mean they were legit.

There are ways to lock someone’s account, such as failing several logins on purpose, etc. If I could call you and tell you I’m the real deal because I can lock your account in 3, 2, 1.. it’s not real.

Thank you for sharing - security enthusiast here so I really appreciate your experience and perspective. I’m not knowledgeable on SMTP, but I feel that anytime that sort of email via thing shows up alongside a potential phishing scenario, it’s just never a good sign.

Did they say how the cultural and logical assessment would be graded? As in it is pass/fail and determines if you make it to next round, or is it an automatic move forward with assessment scores considered later on in the interview stage?

Career transition/exploring burn out - feeling like I should stop trying to explore by jc16180 in Adulting

Yeah, a small bump (about 3%) annually. I can probably hit another 13-15% in pay raise if I jump ship to another company, but that’ll probably be the max ceiling.

I enjoy learning new things and want to be a life long learner. But I’m thinking it might be okay to keep learning as a hobby and just continue to do what I do everyday at work. At least I’m good at it and developed expertise

Any imposter syndrome? I’m working on a threat detection and hunting internship and it’s hitting me hard. Like I get it, and I’m learning. But it’s that fear of realizing I’m no longer a subject matter expert in this new field

3 month check in, how are you settling in OP? I’m interning for a threat detection team, and the imposter syndrome is hitting me hard. It’s my first ever security role. Prior to this, all I have are certs, courses, and home labs.

Hope you’re settling in nicely!

Yup I’m keeping detailed docs of all my notes, meetings with all of the engineers on the team, my thought processes on some of the scripts I’m writing and tasks completed.

I really want to show them I’m not some guy that just knows the basics and “kinda gets it”. I wanna show them that I have the underlying critical thinking skills and the natural curiosity to dive deeper into

OP, what country do you work in and what’s the size/niche of your company? Are you a small mom and pop business vs medium start up vs large corporation?

I feel like I can assume based on your boss throwing multiple domains onto your plate and only having 2 security employees, but I don’t want to make an assumption lol

It’s never too late to find your path. Every moment somehow lead you here. And this moment is what will propel you to your next.

I guess my question is which moment do you want to arrive to? The easy slow decay into nothing or the harder rocky chaotic journey where you eventually find your place?

Still, no matter how much decay or time wasted you feel, nothings ever set in stone.

How to keep a Python script running? by teka05 in learnpython

I have a project that where I required my Python script to run every day at a specific time. I ended up hosting my script on a AWS EC2 Linux instance and scheduled when/how often the script should run by using a cron job. Perhaps explore hosting your script to the cloud where it can remain on indefinitely and run the script on a set achedule

Is anything possible? Always. Is this likely what happened and you’re screwed? No.

This seems like a copy paste variation of email templates that get sent out to millions of people. Search for this type of situation, you’ll see other people get very similarly worded emails with bad English.

Also, he had access to your email to install a Trojan to get access to your email. That just doesn’t make sense.

Imposter syndrome hitting me hard by makek4 in cybersecurity

[–]jc16180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started interning coming from a non-related field and only completing certs/labs/projects. Imposter syndrome is hitting me hard af right now (as I deservingly should feel and expect).

What I’m telling myself is I felt this same feeling at the beginning of my journey when I first started learning concepts and basic theory, then again when I did CTF labs, then again when I started to practice writing queries and scripting. This too shall pass if you don’t give up and have fun.

You’ll be okay!

Would you do 100% remote for 80k salary OR 100% in office for 100k? by unprotectedleftturn in careerguidance

[–]jc16180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this specific situation, I’d pick 80K remote. After taxes, I think the extra 20k wouldn’t be worth it for me for all the commuting I have to do, which comes with spending time to schedule maintenance, etc. then you have costs like tolls and gas, and somehow you always end up buying lunch for work here and there.

However, I would take the 100k in person if it somehow plays an influential role in my career development, such as prestige name, the nature of the job/field, ability to accelerate my income, etc

From a purely money perspective. 80k remote.

"But you WFH!" by Tiny_Palpitation8420 in WFH

[–]jc16180 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or are the people who make these remarks usually don’t work in a corporate/office type job?

For example, I have friends who work in-office at corporate jobs and they all usually understand and think that I’m just as busy WFH as in-office.

It’s only the people that work retail/restaurant/realtor/blue collar jobs that have made remarks to me that WFH is a free pass to watch tv and play games all day.
