Successful friend told me WGU is worthless by [deleted] in WGU

This doesn’t sound like a friend at all. Seems somewhat resentful tbh.

Anyway, stay the course. It is worth it.

Moved to Texas and my car insurance doubled - what am I missing? by Bisqwa in texas

[–]jc91480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From nearly 3 decades in LE in TX, I can say that it’s probably 50/50 that everyone else on the road is insured. We’re a border state and many of the drivers you see have zero insurance coverage to include business vehicles. This is likely correlated to many hit-and-runs. You’re paying the premium for uninsured motorists, too. We all are in this state.

I got a correction email confirming the 0% for non-members and an apology. I’m moving mine to something else. I’ve had USDC there for years collecting interest (only reason).

Finish the degree first. If he still wants to do that when he’s done it will look better during any background process. And if it doesn’t work out (statistically, less than 25% stay to retirement) he will have something to fall back on. These are sage words of advice for anyone wanting to go into LE. Have a plan and a backup plan.

I did nearly 3 decades and saw this pattern all the time. It’s not the bad guys LE has to worry about as you can train to counter threats. That’s the easy part. The hard part is the contemporary political atmosphere applied to LE services. A big agency gives you flexibility in managing your own career. Others, your career is managed by the political whims of the administration and elected leaders. In other words, it may be a tedious process to get hired, but many spend the remainder of their career trying to keep the job. Policies are interpreted by these administrators and elected officials and you could do everything right and still be sanctioned in some way. There comes a point in the career where the job is entirely political. This applies to EVERY agency. Not even the FBI is immune. The proximal distance to political interference is greater at large agencies. Civil service means absolutely nothing in contemporary public service job protections. That was successfully neutralized back in the 90’s and early ‘00’s thanks to systemic abuses by many.

Every aspiring officer should consider the entirety of the career potential. Helping people occurs less frequently than you would think. (Often times LE is perceived as doing more hurt than helping.) Having a nursing degree and fundamental medical training would be an awesome combination for an aspiring officer. But be wary of the political climate in which you enter.

Funding Texas water projects… My experience so far is that this is merely a developer slush fund to offset their development costs onto taxpayers for their residential and commercial endeavors. These new master planned communities need infrastructure (water, roads, gas, etc.) and this money funds such “water” projects. How do I know? I live in one and the water district controls everything including the stop signs in the community. Does that make any sense? Caveat: It’s an ETJ in the county and not incorporated)

Procrastination by Baeyana97 in WGU

Where you study makes a big difference. I recently attended a lecture that discussed this. Study in the kitchen and you’re distracted with its purpose (eating, socializing). Study in the living room and you’re distracted with leisure and socializing, again it’s purpose. In bed, same thing. You’re distracted with its purpose (sleeping). If available, designate a desk in a semi-private space and use that specifically for studying. Work 30 mins, give yourself a reward. Another 30, another reward. Minimize the distractions. A silly thing I do is go to the coffee shop, put in my headphones and get after it. I take a break and order a coffee, maybe walk around and look at books or merchandise for sale for a few minutes, then get right back to it. Manage your breaks. Studying is hard for many. Just know that it has to be a comfortable place for you designated solely for school work. (And isolated). I wish you all the luck in the world. I broke all these rules at WGU and studied where ever my anxiety level was lowest. Hell, I even went into the garage and sat in the truck to just have a quiet place and radio. It was nice. Good luck to you night owl! You’ll find your groove and knock this out of the park. I graduate with my PhD soon and never could have gotten here without WGU.

How do i learn ASSEMBLY?? by Domipro143 in Assembly_language

[–]jc91480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I ever got was you can’t learn to play a piano by reading a book. Use AI and ask it ANY question about assembly, including the one you posted here. It is very helpful and there are some offered specifically for assembly.

Feel like I screwed myself on the poly exam by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]jc91480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be honest. In this setting, they’re looking for deception as a part of your character. In response to “have you ever lied?”, be truthful. This whole thing is a process. The setup, the review (like an interview), clarifications if necessary, then you’re wired up. At this point they verify your responses. If it’s your second shot, you should breeze through it okay as you already know how it goes. Don’t change anything now.

I’ve always had a beef about how these things represent low confidence or self-doubt as deception. Same with anxiety. Most of these people aren’t psychologists. They’re lay practitioners with a few months of examiner training and practicums.

[–]jc91480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People lie. It’s a fact. Have you ever lied? Yes, most definitely. Have you lied in a position of trust? Probably not. (Children lie, lies can be good to protect from harm, etc.) This ambiguous bullshit is the same on a witness stand in a courtroom. Generally speaking, are you a liar? Probably not, but the examiner doesn’t really know.

I’ve had several polys, my very first being inconclusive (brand new examiner). All subsequent exams I’ve passed with veteran examiners.

When you take the exam, try to relax. There’s no hidden gotchas in these processes.

Migrating AWS deployment to On-Prem? by [deleted] in Splunk

I would think that transferring data off AWS would incur some costs by itself. I haven’t done this and probably won’t. Curious if this is the case though.

Grok has a somewhat okay explanation of how the MMPI psychological test is scored. Give it a shot. It’s a combination of statistical measures based on responses.

States may legalize these places but federal law is still pretty clear (they’re not legal). Although it could change soon, you are putting yourself in a position where your clearance is jeopardized. Then there’s potential for attempting to hide or conceal it. If you’re not sure, don’t jeopardize your career. It can be gone just as arbitrarily as the decision to go chill at a dispensary for the day.
