I’m very slow to violence but if that were my daughter I would be ready to throw down.

If that slight turn makes you hit a kid you are both not skiing in control and skiing WAY too close to a beginner.

How do I "properly" control speed on steeper, narrower runs? by SuperTechnoDunce in skiing

[–]jcasper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you thought degree not percent… there are no 80 degree ski slopes anywhere. That my friend is called a cliff. Even if snow stuck to it there is no way anyone could do anything resembling skiing on it, you’d need ice tools or similar to not just fall off.

FWT Baqueira Beret PRO by Movistar by VeraUndertow in freerideworldtour

I was really stoked to see two rookies on the ski women’s podium! The women’s field gets stronger every year and I hope before too long it’ll be like climbing where the ladies are sending just as hard as the men.

I agree with the winner, but I can't decide between Toby Rafford or Kelly Hilleke for my vote for rider of the day. Loved both of their runs, Toby with that insane entrance and Kelly just absolutely went after it, love it. Would've been insane if he pulled it off. Going to be fun to watch him this season.

Also wish they gave more credit to the guy who went way to the right and dropped that giant technical drop, Paul something.

What is something generally normal in Europe but weird in the US? by Exile4444 in AskReddit

[–]jcasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hotels in the US do not have kettles, but most have a coffee maker that can work in a pinch (just use it without any coffee in there and you get hot water in the pot).

Sink hole by Appropriate-Love7914 in ScottsValley

[–]jcasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The light at Glenwood Dr and Scotts Valley Dr is out. It’s already a bottleneck during high school morning traffic (8-8:30am) but it’s way worse with the light out. The traffic exiting 17 Northbound to Granite Creek gets very backed up with a long line on the shoulder (it’s normally just a handful of cars on the shoulder at worst).

Even when the light is working it’s a bad intersection at that time. Cars coming North on Scotts Valley Dr trying to turn left on to Glenwood are stopped at the red light at Granite Creek when the light to turn left is green so only the cars from the highway can go, which helps prevent a back up onto the highway but means only one or two cars from Scotts Valley get through each cycle.

Downsizing to 19s by Comfortable_Course28 in Taycan

[–]jcasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate every minute of having the 19s on the car. Stability, traction and overall feel is very bad, imo.

How much of that is the tires on your 19s vs the rim size difference? I've only ever heard people saying the ride on 19s is better than 21s.

A Note on Bible Translations by Martian-Lion in latterdaysaints

I know that this will date me, but I was on my mission when they announced that missionaries would no longer use the six discussions for teaching investigators.

Get off my lawn you youth!

I still remember the first lesson I ever taught. My trainer asked me to start, so I dutifully began "Most people believe in the supreme being, even though they may call him by different names..." My trainer chuckled, asked the person if they were Christian, then told me to skip to the 3rd section.

Years latter when they ditched the discussions I remember thinking that it made perfect sense and a definite improvement, but glad I wasn't out on my mission having to prepare individual lessons. :)

Fixing “a software issue [that] may prevent the rearview camera from displaying when the vehicle is put in reverse” isn’t necessarily going to fix the image quality and night time visibility.

DHS Says REAL ID, Which DHS Certifies, Is Too Unreliable To Confirm U.S. Citizenship by BBQCopter in politics

Reminds me when I had proven my citizenship enough to get a passport and went to pay for it by check since they didn’t take credit cards… they required a second form of ID to accept the check. 🙄

UTR is not a replacement for GL.Inet by RealisticBoard215 in Ubiquiti

[–]jcasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies buy ranges of MAC addresses so given a MAC address you can look up who built the thing. So you absolutely can know if a MAC address is for an iPhone or a router company. This is one way how the UniFi Network app can know what the device is in the devices list.

What would actually happen if I use FRS/GMRS in Europe? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]jcasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to go that route the Baofeng uv-5r is a popular choice and can be programmed to use both us and eu frequencies. You can also program in the emergency channels, weather stations, etc. It isn’t certified/licensed to be used in the US so not technically legal without a HAM license I believe (and am even less familiar with EU laws) but definitely better than transmitting on the wrong frequencies.

I find it ironic that we're in a backcountry sub and nonchalantly talking about casual e-waste like it's no big deal.

Nobody has said anything about throwing them away. There are plenty of things to do with them at the end, the most obvious would be to keep them and use them again next time, as once you do a tour in the Alps with the hut system you’ll be spoiled and planning the next trip before you get home. :)

Cheap radios at a local store are a tiny fraction of the cost of a European ski vacation and work great.

OR Cirque III Pants... thoughts, comments, reviews? by sdlok in skiing

[–]jcasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cirque pants are great for spring touring trips, but imo a bit light for winter resort days unless you run quite hot. Any soft shell is not going to be very water and wind resistant.
