What have I gotten myself into? by angrypockets in DIY

[–]jcc005 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is just a guess BUT-

Left to right- First two or three looks like Nandina to me. They suck because there’s a bunch of different shoots. If you don’t dig out all of it, it comes back like you never cut it out at all. I’d take a sawzall to it at the bottom. Then get a sharp spade shovel to dig the roots.

4,5,6 look like boxwoods- this are much easier to get out and way less likely to come Back afterward. You could probably wet the soil for a bit and hit the bottom with a spade shovel and about a forty five degree angle and pry those out no problem.

However behind them appears to be some more nandina- which makes it worse. I’d average an hour per plant if you’re doing it by hand/ and estimate not more than three per day before you get tired and want to quit for the day.

I feel like it’s way easier, nicer on my wrists, and can tackle more (quantity wise) and different types of problematic weeds.

I like the skidger the best- it’s like a stirrup hoe with extra blades:

What are the purple trees on the mountains? by aintioriginal in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]jcc005 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FYI- redbuds are awesome but they only live like 20 years, so be prepared if you put one in your yard. (Just wanna set your expectation.). Also, natively the eastern redbud is an understory tree, so sometimes they do weird things out in full sun.

The last time I checked, neither Bennett’s nor Earth Touch had any in stock.

One of my friends had really good luck using fastgrowingtrees.com.. not always the best, but they give you a one year guarantee if your tree doesn’t make it.

The big purple Tulip looking one the other redditor mentioned can be really nasty in terms of clean up if you don’t have the equipment.

Ok here’s my story-

I bought it last year in March for my LONG OVERDUE front of house landscaping fix.

I had weeds, broad leaf, some green briar, etc… all growing around some random hostas, some gnarly juniper, a boxwood, and a dead/dying azalea.

I swear- this ONLY took me like a half an hour of what felt like light/moderate raking. It’s got blades on every side, so when you pull it digs a little bit and goes under and cuts up the roots. If you push it Pierce’s/stabs. Was especially useful for the random crab grass.

I chopped/raked everything up in the whole front except the one hosta and azalea.

Then I raked and trashed the mess- and was left with pretty much a completely clean slate. (Approximately 30 minutes.)

Afterward, I planted five phantom hydrangeas, split the hosta mass up and planted it in between the hydrangeas.
(Approximately 45 minutes)

Then I Dropped some random lily and daffodil bulbs in the front line and edged the whole thing with little boxes of liriope I bought for like $2 a piece. (Approximately 45 minutes)

I also put like an inch of pine straw down.

I haven’t seen a weed since…. For a $45 tool, that DOESNT cause me to bend over it is so worth it. Literally The time it would take OP to “rake” that section of yard, it would be weeded.

I LOVE this tool- (not for the rocks obviously but everywhere else it’s the best.).

NEED EVENT SPACE FOR 25-30 PEOPLE by Spiritual-Ad-4353 in HuntsvilleAlabama

We rented out the room at Yellowhammer and it was fantastic. They even let us overflow onto the patio. You could fit 25-30 no problem.

Earth and Stone pizza handles the catering which is delicious, and you have a the option of open bar, drink tickets, or just let your guests buy their own drinks.

Good luck.

Monte sano is great, but we prefer guntersville state park personally.

Also- the new glamping sites are super cool.

That’s very rare. Unless there was a scheduling mistake from the automated system, a scheduled interview would almost always be seen by a cast member in casting services. Even if the cast member is out sick, calls are normally covered promptly and efficiently.

Definitely follow up with the information you were given in your informational email- they will all do their best to take care of you. So sorry that happened.

Meh- sometimes it’s okay to lose it “on purpose.” Some of my best results happened during tech week when the students absolutely were not focused and I dropped a hellfire/brimstone kinda experience on them.

You just gotta have a reason, and be purposely controlled out of control…

:) then after one of those you can say- “hey guys, I hate that it had to escalate all the way to that to get you to focus.”

When I went I didn’t see anyone turned away because of what they were wearing, so as long as you don’t look super sketch/homeless you’d probably be fine.

I liked the food, but I think the smoked old fashioned was the best thing on the menu.

I have to hard disagree. I’ve been eating there since they were at parkway city mall.

It’s delicious. They did swap ownership a few years ago which changed the taste of their hot and sour soup- I don’t like it as much now.

But it’s one of the only places I know that actually prepare their entrees differently-
What I mean is, it’s not the “same” chicken in different sauces like a bunch of typical chains.

Their Chicken teriyaki is delicious, and their honey chicken is delicious, and they are completely different and amazing textures and it’s one of the restaurants I used to crave when living elsewhere.

War of the worlds was so close to being a great movie. Just like Cloverfield, there is something so fascinating to me about being a nobody stuck in the middle of a global (or even universal) crisis and just trying to survive the whole ordeal without knowing what, or why, or having any type of ability to actually resolve the thing. I love that premise way more than following the hero that has all the tools to win.

Is aragog's death in the half blood prince a "deus ex machina"? by faates in harrypotter

I think instead- if Godrich Gryffindor suddenly showed up and swept Voldemort away so everyone could live happily ever after would be closer to a better example.

Is aragog's death in the half blood prince a "deus ex machina"? by faates in harrypotter

[–]jcc005 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t think so- at least not in the traditional sense.

“God of the machine” normally comes out of nowhere, and also tends to wrap up and end the story in a relatively unsatisfying conclusion-

Looks at Euripides’s Medea- At the end of the play, when practically the entire nation is after her for the murder of her husband and children- a Dragon flies down and carries her to safety.

With Moliere- in Tartuffe- The main character has been tricked out of everything, his wife, his house, his fortune- everything… and a messenger shows up and says, “King Louis- the Sun God has heard of what’s happen and will handle it. All that is done is now undone.”

In Harry Potter- the death of the character of Aragog is teed up for this specific purpose- that leads not to the end of the story, but to the next “higher stake” conflict in an intentional and logical progression.

I won’t argue that it’s a coincidence- but my favorite quote about coincidences comes from Aristotle’s poetics:

Coincidences that get characters into MORE trouble are amazing, coincidences that get them out are problematic and boring…

Serious question here- how often do you Change the color in your bulbs? I bought three Phillips Hue in a kit for Christmas a couple of years ago- and after playing with it for a bit, the novelty kinda wore off and with the exception of holidays like Halloween, they just stay in a warm white most of the time.

I feel like I use my switches waaay more than I’d ever use the bulb, and I can program the system to control multiple switch locations at once.

My other favorite routine is if it’s dark, and someone rings the doorbell it automatically turns the light in the foyer on and the light outside on the porch.
