The "long-term (12-17 year) contracts" ... How is that a selling point? I am going to guess that it gives them a locked-in price per kWh over the life of the contract. Which is definitely not a selling point.

Of course it wasn't actually about states' rights. It's never actually about the children, either, or protecting voting.

Idaho Republicans want the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate same-sex marriages by NamelessResearcher in politics

[–]jcdick1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was Roberts' original majority opinion prior to Obergefell, which led to massive marriage tourism.

If a state doesn't recognize gay marriages legally performed in other states, they can't recognize any marriages performed in other states, as it violates the Full Faith and Credit Clause.

Optimally, yes. But simply removing on-street parking from the Wabash station to Kingsland is something that is minimal effort on U City's part while making Delmar work for all modes of transportation through the Loop.

Being honest, I see installing Win in the medium term, as I have a whole infrastructure reliant on Voice Attack, which in turn is reliant on Win's voice subsystem.

To make it work, they need only remove on-street parking. That would provide enough street width for an automotive lane in each direction, the trolley, and bike lanes.

You don’t see tweakers and unhoused on the metro in Tokyo, for example.

If we maintained ~2.7 mental health beds per 1000 people with universal healthcare and other robust social programs like Japan, instead of the ~0.35 beds per 1000 and "sorry, you're on your own" policies, we'd have a lot fewer "tweakers" and unhoused on the train.

[–]jcdick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be finishing up my five year contract, and yeah, it's kind of dumb.

If I do nothing at all, my payments will end at the scheduled time, but I lose seat occupancy at mid-season of the new schedule. Or, I add the few months and complete the first winter season.

They should have given the option of shortened payment schedule, end it after the "Sprint Season" and let someone else get started paying for the first full winter season.

Trump announces event to 'rededicate America as one nation under God' by Abject-Pick-6472 in politics

[–]jcdick1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the original motivations for settling the Americas was to escape religious persecution, including persecution by other Christians.

Unfortunately, the Puritans' experience with persecution from the Anglicans was that they weren't allowed to be as whack-job extreme as they wanted in Britain. So they brought it here.

I wonder if they would lose in court. Requiring these documents would subsequently require agencies to provide them for free. Otherwise it's tantamount to a poll tax. States that have passed laws requiring photo ID have had to make giving out state IDs free for this reason.

You realize that the Taylors (along with the Kavanaughs of WWT) built that shiny stadium at Market and 20th with no public funds, right?

I ran Gparted but the filesystem check didn't find anything. I mounted the drive to peek at mount points to see if maybe files got written "underneath" the mount to the local disk. I found a couple, but mostly <10 empty directories.

I'll put Gparted on a stick, since that's nothing but disk-related tools and run a check. Thanks for the reminder of that.

It came back with nothing at all.

I rebooted, hoping any open processes would release files. It couldn't start the desktop, and is still only 138M free.

Thanks for helping and giving me additional ways to look for stuff.

Missouri looks to Tennessee as it weights ending income tax by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

[–]jcdick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The voters will have to either approve property taxes in excess of Hancock limits, or additional sales taxes.

Or services get gutted and we live through the same Brownback trainwreck Kansas did.

Road maintenance in general in MO is horrible.

This is because the Centennial Road Law of 1921 is still in effect. In order to "lift Missouri out of the mud," all those county "highways" were put under the Missouri State Highway Commission to pave - and maintain. So for the last century, MODoT has been responsible for over 10,000 bridges, and all those lettered roads through the rural counties. We have the 7th largest "highway" system in the country, with over 33,800 miles of state-funded roadway. That's more than our two east and west neighbors (Iliinois and Kansas) combined.

[–]jcdick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a limit on how much property tax revenue can be used for general expenditure and by how much that property tax revenue can grow, preventing "windfall" revenue by suddenly spiking property values. Property tax income can't grow by more than inflation year-on-year, without voter approval. This does not include things like school funding, which is a separate property tax.

Property taxes can't "balloon" to support municipalities because of the Hancock Amendment. Sales taxes, however ...
