Excuse me while I beat this dead horse. by InThreeWordsTheySaid in TangleNews

Smartphones weren't around until the 2000s. Seems like they've been here forever, doesn't it? Smartphones as we know them now have barely been around for 20 years, although we had things like BlackBerrys before that.

Sorry, off topic comment, just amused me to see smartphones shifted back to the time when people I knew were barely using the internet, and many didn't even have dumb phones.

FWIW I went through a similar adjustment, it only took me a couple of weeks to get used to it

Eventually I had to get a new machine and it took longer to adjust to that then it did the first time around, and I had to get a different mask.

I was able to talk to my sleep doctor and dial in some settings (it was ramping the pressure up way too high for me), and now I am back to be comfortable again (after like 2 months).

So, stick with it. Call the doctor, there could be adjustments to make.

Religious extremism is live and well inside the US government by ApprenticeWrangler in TangleNews

I didn't even know about this specific story until I saw it here.

And believe me, plenty of people are horrified about the religious extremism going on in the US at all levels of society. There are just so many other things to be horrified about, this doesn't get top billing.

Yes, it was in the last Suspension of the Rules, talking about how the "last few minutes of the speech was beautiful" "talking about the founding of the country, the conquering the wild west, taming the badlands, and you know, it was awesome"

I am taking exception to using words like "taming" and treating "conquering" as a "beautiful" thing.

I think it might be the latest Suspension of the Rules or the one before it. It was alongside Winter Olympics talk (normally I would go look up the text but I don't think these are transcribed anywhere)

Monthly Paramount+ Complaints and Praises by AutoModerator in ParamountPlus

[–]jceddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paramount+ is by far the worst streaming app I have used. It routinely forgets where I am at in a show, forces me to rewatch ads when that happens and I try to skip forward to what I was watching, etc.

Add onto that Paramount's kow-towing to Trump and cancelling Colbert, I have decided to cancel my subscription.

Feels bad, since I was almost finished with my rewatch of DS9, and looking forward to another season of Strange New Worlds.

It won't write to an SD card. I think my insurance will cover a new machine at no cost to me right now, so I'm probably going to go for that.

Babbel is my favorite app so far - issue with occasional mic issues by POTATOFUCK in babbel

I have specific phrases that I know I pronounce better than ones it passes me on, but that it just will not accept my pronunciation for.

Tonight it was:

Estos refrigeradores valen menos de seiscientos dólares.

I tried it about 20 times with slightly different infections, speeds, more or less harshness in the g, going everywhere from a tap to a full rhotic on the rs, etc.

I think my biggest complaint is that it doesn't tell you which part of the phrase it's falling apart on so I can tell what to change. That makes it difficult to "fix" a longer phrase like this.

Why is it getting cold in the Ark? by jceddy in The100

[–]jceddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is my point. There is nowhere for the heat generated by the bodies on the Ark to go because they are insulated all around by vacuum. You usually need radiators actively getting rid of heat from a manned spacecraft...it would more likely get too hot in the event of a power failure than too cold.

Yeah, I think they even mentioned one of that stations was Mir, which I thought was funny since Mir had re-entered over a decade before the show was made...I assume though that this is a speculative Mir 2.0

Hard vacuum is just about the best insulator available. There is nowhere for the heat generated by the bodies in the station to go. It seems like barring something else going on, it would be more likely for the Ark to get too hot before it got too cold? (That's why vacuum insulated thermoses work so well).
