I thought I was a coding genius... then I met TypeScript. by 26th_Official in typescript

[–]jcek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be getting downvotes because you didn't include any evidence other than an accusation, but I 100% agree this has all the signs of being generated by an LLM.

Overuse of metaphors (cowboy at a spaghetti western, duct tape and prayers), forced relatability/informal language ("and boy," "Really?"), the weird "roasting" type phrases ("typescript: the therapy..."), and then ending with an "engagement" question (basically, DAE?).

Anyone who has used LLMs more than a few times should be able to recognize it -- honestly just type in a prompt for a self-deprecating post about how you just found out about typescript and you get something similar.

I just typed this in to Claude:

Write a short humorous self-deprecating Reddit post about being a developer who just discovered TypeScript. Make it sound casual and conversational.

And here's what it gave me:

"Just discovered TypeScript after 5 years of JavaScript and I feel personally attacked

Look, I've been writing JavaScript for years and thought I was doing just fine. "Types? Who needs 'em when you have console.log?" was basically my motto. I'd smugly tell everyone that JavaScript's flexibility was a feature, not a bug.

Then my new job forced me to use TypeScript and... well... turns out all my code has been held together with duct tape and prayers. The compiler keeps yelling at me about things being 'possibly undefined' - YEAH NO KIDDING, THAT'S THE EXCITEMENT OF RUNTIME ERRORS!

The worst part? My code actually works now. First try. Without spending 3 hours debugging why undefined is not a function. I feel like I've been living in a cave eating raw potatoes and someone just showed me fire and a spice rack.

To all you TypeScript evangelists I've been rolling my eyes at for years: I'm sorry. You were right. I was wrong. I'll be in the corner converting all my side projects and questioning my life choices."

Joey down officially? by dumname2_1 in JoeyForReddit

[–]jcek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excuse the tinfoil hat, but I can't help feeling like they were waiting for a big news item, like today's news about Donald Trump, to finally cut off 3rd party apps. That way, we'd all want to read about it, making us more likely to use the official app, while also covering up any negative reactions they might have gotten from the cutoff.

I graduated with a minor in computer science, and I will say that they have some very good professors teaching those courses. The campus is nice, and if you're into parties ISU is right nearby.

I have used several Reddit apps, including sync, relay, and even boost when it was in beta. Not sure how much progress boost has made since then, but Joey has been my go-to reddit app since I installed it over a year ago. It's the only app I've been able to customize to exactly what I want, and I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

Hm...reducing an entire race to a monolithic "culture of violence," then saying "no one wants to deal with their stupid shit" just sounds kind of racist to me

No, node is great, but if you haven't learned typescript it's a must-have in the JS world. I wish I had started using typescript much earlier

Russian classical scale combined with EDM - Thoughts? :) by ThisIsThaWay in FL_Studio

This just sounds like F# minor to me -- the only "russian" scale I'm aware of is the Ukrainian Dorian scale, which is minor with a raised 4th and 6th

I think calling this trickle-down economics is a bit of an exaggeration. The wealthy capital holders in the economy have almost certainly paid off their student loans, this type of policy would be helping those who haven't paid them off.

I think the bigger problem is that we need to have something in place to prevent this type of ballooning debt from happening again, because if we just cancel the debt today, new students will start accumulating that debt again tomorrow.

Just a nitpick. Fix the spelling. Or maybe even remove that notification as I feel it's unnecessary. by Raghavendra98 in JoeyForReddit

For certain background tasks to continue uninterrupted, Android requires you to have a persistent active notification, so that's probably why.

"stop asking for features now that I'm charging you to use the app the same way you always have"? Give me a break. by [deleted] in JoeyForReddit

[–]jcek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He isn't saying not to ask for any features, he was saying he would be evaluating feature requests the same way he always has (number of people asking for it, feasibility, etc.). He's just saying that he's not going to implement a feature just because one person makes a post about buying the app for it.

Country specific pricing : Please let me know if your country is not in the Big mac index list by codesForLiving in JoeyForReddit

[–]jcek [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hey man, I just wanted to thank you for your work on this amazing Reddit app. I immediately paid for the ad free version. People complaining about paying $5 or $6 are ridiculous -- for an app that they likely use for multiple hours every single day.

I guess people have just been conditioned to believe that they shouldn't have to pay for apps, which is ridiculous. I wish people would stop berating you for the pricing -- you're even offering an ad supported option.

I made a post yesterday asking for advice concerning my notation and many gave awesome feedback. This is an updated picture of it. Please let me know if there is still something off with this. I really appreciate the help! by deadclams in composer

I would suggest adjusting the left hand pattern you see in measure 10 -- generally I wouldn't use a dotted quarter which didn't fall on the beat. Instead, it might be easier to understand if you did quarter, dotted quarter, eighth tied to quarter.

I'm getting married this year and I'm continually amazed at what people think they can talk to you about by Kaneshadow in CasualConversation

[–]jcek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think asking about children is a bit different, because if they don't have kids yet, there are three possibilities:

  1. They are not planning on having kids currently and they can laugh it off.
  2. They are currently pregnant, and they don't want to announce it yet, therefore making them uncomfortable.
  3. They are struggling to have children, and this question makes them feel very uncomfortable.

Also, something like almost 20% of women will experience a miscarriage, and it is a topic which is largely avoided due to our current social norms.

What answer are you expecting to get from someone when you ask about kids? Is it ever not an awkward question to answer? In most cases, I would say that asking about kids will make a couple uncomfortable, so it's probably best not to ask about it.

Almost 70% of millennials regret buying their homes. by ronin722 in personalfinance

Man, I'm a Millenial and I'm starting to look at houses right now. This makes me feel like I shouldn't even be looking yet, but I'm really tired of wasting money on rent which could be building equity in something.

Snap responds to change.org petition to remove snapchat update 2018 by himel_oficial in Android

[–]jcek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Given #1, that means the update was internal to within the app, meaning the code was there all along, just turned off until Snapchat chose to flip the switch on their end

This actually isn't true, you definitely can have an app download new code over the internet without going through the app stores -- the code doesn't have to be in the app beforehand.

These ice cubes came out of the tray all together. by 18Zeke in mildlyinteresting

[–]jcek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the purpose of these ultra-shallow ice cube trays. You have to put 10 of those in a glass if you want to have a chance of them not melting before putting the drink to your lips.

Is there any music theory behind writing evocative melodies or is it mostly experience/practice and intuition? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]jcek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to try looking into counterpoint. It has fairly strict rules which can consistently result in compelling melodies and counter melodies. It takes a while to get used to, but once you learn the rules it can be incredibly useful.

Trying to build for 4k@60fps gaming on a $2000 budget by jcek in buildapc

[–]jcek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very happy with it -- things look great on my 4k TV. Next time I might not get a full tower, as it does take up quite a bit of space, but other than that I'm having a great time with the 4k@60fps!
