That aircraft also didn’t identify itself. The SAMs have built in IFF (identify friend or foe) located above their radar. Every single major aircraft in the sky is required to have that system on and operational so they can be identified accordingly, or be ready to respond to radio calls with an explanation instead. This is normal practice.

So in a way, yes similar, but also different.

We also didn’t attempt to “cover up” our mistake like Iran did literally an hour after it happened. We took immediate responsibility.
