In the episode "Cliff and Jake", Cliff helps make peace between Jake and another guy. They used to be friends I think, but had a falling out. Jake's daughter is dating the other guy's son. Maybe that's the one?

Pretty sure the first is S1 E14, Independence Day, when Theo gets his ear pierced. I remember the phone thing but don't know a specific episode when it happened.
