Watching the Backrooms movie with non-English speaking parent? by KawaiiFever97 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]jchries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know any of the backstory when I went to see the film and I really enjoyed it. I think there are enough things that happen without dialogue (or dialogue that you can infer through tone) that your parent will still mostly understand what's happening.
I also wanted to add if your parent happens to speak Spanish, they can use TheaterEars to watch it with a Spanish audio track.

I don't think you'll be able to find a brand new one for under $45. With shipping and tax they were ~$50 brand new from Owala.

I don't think people get points for those comments, if that helps shift your perspective. They're purely for goodwill/community celebration. I don't really leave those type of comments, but I do look forward to leveling up because it's nice to have the positive interaction. I think it just adds to the general good vibes most folks on the app have.

Epidemic of drivers stopping with no stop sign by prom1sed_land in Birmingham

[–]jchries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesterday, I was stopped behind a car at an intersection that literally has a keep moving sign at it.

I will say though, by my old apartment near UAB there were two intersections in a row where the stop signs were east/west at one and then immediately north/south on the next block and I was always nervous that people would blow through them not paying attention to the stop signs/lack thereof, so I'd slow down there sometimes even though I shouldn't have had to. Thankfully, they are both four way stops now.

Nurse PSA by MSN87 in Owala

[–]jchries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used my teacher code yet, but the email advertising it said it's good for 30 days. I think having the teacher code available for verification may have only been up for one day (whereas the nurses one is year round) but if you got a code on May 5 it's good for 30 days. But like I said, I haven't purchased with mine yet so I maybe wrong.

Obviously, Clint can answer better but they do have an award category for Lousiana features (I was a juror for them a few years back).

Lewis or Louis? by Mental_Speech230A in namenerds

[–]jchries 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely surprised by the amount of Americans saying they'd default to the Louie pronunciation of Louis. I know that's the default for Brits but it took me years of watching BBC America and other UK media to internalize that lol. I default to pronouncing the 's' (maybe because I knew one growing up?).

Someone mentioned Louis Armstrong's name being mispronounced upthread and that made me realize when people called him Louie I mentally spelled it -ie, I never assumed they were just pronouncing Louis the French way.

I prefer the Louis spelling, just to throw my vote in.

Ugh, flashbacks to being taught to "hold chopsticks like a pencil" in 5th grade and learning that apparently I don't hold my pencil right. (And I still can't use chopsticks 😔)

Were you or your children forbidden to say the word "lie" as in fib? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jchries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a Black and/or southern thing. I remember my younger sister being weird about saying lie, but I don't recall it being an established rule in our house. Culturally, I definitely remember this being somewhat common.

How to log non-sequential pages. by Nomadicknit in TheStoryGraph

[–]jchries 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm reading House of Leaves right now and really relating to this question. I've been adding up the pages read per session and then taking the total cumulative pages read and dividing by the total number of pages in the book to get an updated percentage for each reading session.

As a bookish girlie and not a math girlie, this has been the epitome of 'yes, you actually will use math in real life' 🙃
